I mentioned to my husband as I sat down to eat "wouldn't I look the fool if I open the bucket to find a bunch of breaded steak instead of chicken?" but then we both agreed that would be delicious.  The bucket was about 50% dark meat, so I'm not really sure what went down in the dude's mind...  Back when I worked at KFC we always had more dark meat than white, and were more than happy to give away an all dark meat bucket.

The people at Popeye's always look at me like I'm crazy when I ask for all dark. I can't help that it tastes better. I bet in a double-blind test most people would prefer the old dark-meat chicken McNuggets over the new white-meat ones.

but this gluten-free diet the missus is on is making that pretty difficult.

The fact that you call it a diet leads me to believe she is doing this by choice and not out of any major health concern? That sounds like a terrible decision. My good friend just found out she has celiac disease (apparently it can develop or manifest later in life) and it was tragic. Out of all of my friends she is the only one who loves beer as much as I do. Have you tasted gluten-free beer? Don't bother. But apparently there are lot of people who advocate a gluten-free diet for everyone.

Your 7-Elevens sell fried chicken? Fascinating.

You beat me to it. My mind is blown. It took me a couple minutes to get past this statement:

a recent visit to 7-11 for fried chicken.

and I still had to go back a few times to make sure I had read it right. I mean, out of all the cultural differences I'm aware of between the US and Canada, this is by far the most disturbing.

three weeks, ten pounds. it's a periodic detox diet thing. gluten is as bad for the human body as anything else that's tasty; we could all do with less of it. but zero? fuck that. i'm drinking beer and eating pizza whenever i feel like it. but no, i don't need wheat in every meal, just like i don't need meat or sugar or alcohol in every meal.

zero-anything diets are pointless, except philosophically. complete abstinence is not moderation.

I'm skeptical that gluten in and of itself is a problem for anyone other than celiac disease sufferers.  One might propose an albumin free diet that's just as effective in promoting weight loss, simply because you're actually being conscious about what gets stuffed in your pie hole - not because some international chicken conglomerate has an ulterior motive in getting you to consume more albumin than your paleolithic ancestors were "designed" for.  The eggs we're eating these days are HUGE compared to the eggs your great-grandparents ate in the 1800's!

it's mainly that so much of today's gluten is so heavily processed. time was, gluten was only part of what was yanked off the wheat stalk, now ain't nothin' much else in that bag of cisco flour what goes into most of your breads.

I have to say, I ain't missing red meat all that much. I mean, I like it alright, but I've been going without it for quite a while now. These days I'm eating less - that 'keep hungry' and 'be just 6/10ths full' thing seems to have stuck with me as I crossed into the 30's; I've always been a lean dude, but lately I've been developing shapes when I sit down, and that's not cool, so... better put a stop to that while I can. It also helps with the budget. White meat on the other hand... MY GOD IS THIS BORING, sorry.

Smoked - delicious; smoker - gross (I didn't know the term. thankyou.)

+ + +

... try to get home early, get blazed a bit, and just relax, calmly waiting for Saturday morning (I'm not working on Saturdays any longer, also tomorrow is my birthday, so I'll be blazed again in my underwear, doing shit for the whole day \o/).

Also, circumstances made me move back with the female progenitor, but this is bound to end, now that...

I got meself a better job, in an area closer to stuff that I like (it's a game translation gig; at least it promises not to chew my soul as much as the technical stuff I'm currently doing - I'll take "Triumphant Shoulder Pad of Beast Slaying" over "Remove the cable entry sockets from the guide grooves in the connecting compartment" any day).

Now I just need a cool way to resign my current job. Any ideas?

and I still had to go back a few times to make sure I had read it right. I mean, out of all the cultural differences I'm aware of between the US and Canada, this is by far the most disturbing.

Oh, man, I would say the majority of the 7-11's in my city do not sell chicken, I only know of two that sell it for sure, but a quick google seems to indicate there are at least a couple other provinces in Canada that have some 7-11's with chicken.  The thing is... 7-11 food in general (hot dogs, nachos, sandwiches, etc.) is a study in mediocrity, while the chicken is basically amazing. I'm talking tasty, crispy coating, with intensely juicy tender meat inside.  They also have great potato wedges, which are always served with ranch dressing as a dipping sauce, chicken kebabs (regular or honey garlic) and wings (regular, honey garlic and spicy), chicken nuggets, chicken fingers... hmmm... I feel like I'm missing a few things, but yeah - the hot food menu at the few locations that have one is stellar.  I remember probably close to 15 years ago, first learning of the chicken at Sev' phenomenon when coming home from the bar, intoxicated.  My designated driver indicated to myself and the rowdy bunch of drunks he was driving home that because of his lack of enjoyment that night, that we were required to buy him a chicken kebab at 7-11, and I was disgusted at the mere concept of 7-11 selling chicken, but then, naturally we all ended up in a Sev' parking lot eating the stuff, and since then I've been sold.

I imagine the whole hot menu as being some how related to my home town holding the title of Slurpee Capitol of the World for the past 10 years.  That's right, the further most northern city with a population over 600 000 in North America consumes more Slurpees than anywhere else in the whole god damn world.  There's even a quaint documentary about my city's love of the product.

my brother wrote the nicest thing ever about me on his senior page in the yearbook. he's normally not a very emotional/sentimental kid, so it means a lot. I mean, he will not even let me hug him.

the speaker at his graduation was a... I really want to say he was a Fascist. Told a big room full of rich white American kids that there's no such thing as luck, and everything we get is due to our good decisions. Also: was introduced as a pastor who is nationally known for helping men "find Authentic Biblical Manhood" and "protecting family values." Barf.

the apartment I am moving into, pros and cons:

pros:
very very cheap
cool location
pretty from the outside
my room is bright green
powerful AC unit
living with a guy I really like, who is much easier to interact with than my old roommate.
other friends live in the building
my window looks into an alley. The other guy's rooms look onto a main road, which is nice-looking but really loud.

cons:
cockroaches
mice
the girl who lived here before us didn't clean anything before she moved out.
she had a dog.
we don't have keys to half the locks
moving lots of furniture up to the third floor
used syringe in alley
peeling lead paint
really small. like, definitely meant to be for a married couple instead of 3 guys.
no place to park

when I tell people where I live, they say, "oh, the sex dungeon?" I am not sure where the sex dungeon part comes from, but I have heard many many times that the landlord accepts blowjobs for rent.

I think I am realizing there are equally cheap places elsewhere in st louis that are nicer. but, fuck it, it's 3 months. I would have killed to live in such a cool building at any other point in my life.

now: finding a job. ahh.

Smells, that was a very heartwarming piece.  It's pretty fascinating to me that a city which is so cold for most of the year has a frozen beverage as it's most favorite thing.

I would guess that my town consumes more frozen Slurpeesque type beverages, Polar Ice is one that's very popular, but we don't have Sev here in Houston anymore except in a few isolated places so I'm sure we don't even register in the statistics.
