So this is news to me. You can get poutine with all different toppings, like pizza or something? Is this some newfangled culinary innovation, or has this always been true?

I think the addition of things other than curds and gravy is a somewhat recent evolution.  It definitely wasn't always the standard and certainly locally it's something that's only become available in the past 1 to 2 years or so, though there's always been some clear bastardization of poutine kicking around.  It's only recently become a trendy thing, rather than a sacrilege.

Like Boston Pizza, New York Fries is one of those Canadian chains more or less unaffiliated with their namesake in any way.  They have "Butter Chicken Poutine" which I've yet to try.  Though I love butter chicken and poutine, I really don't think they belong together.  Melty cheeses and Indian food just don't seem to belong together to me.

Ha ha, I've thought much the same.  Not in those terms exactly, but yeah.

I'm going to Summerfest tomorrow and Sunday.  One of the upsides of having an artcar.  They've asked us to come and be on display inside the festival.  Fuck yeah.  No parking in Bumfuck and walking half a day.  I'm gonna drive my car right up in there.  I'm going to park right on the edge of the hill and watch the show from the mother fuck*ng roof of the car.  Also, I'll be bringing in everything I need so no paying out the ass for beverages and food.  Life is good my droogies.

I'm most looking forward to seeing Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.  Thanks to Nabu once again for turning me on to her via the Fluxblog best of 2010 mixdisc.

Today I'm gonna spend three hours cleaning out the kids' toy closet -- in addition to the four hours I spent working on it yesterday. The sheer volume of toys and crap they had in there was limiting my ability to get to the stuff they actually wanted to play with, and I had five huge bins of random stuff that we had picked up from elsewhere in the house and shoved in the closet because we had company coming. We figured, "Well sort it out later..." It took forever, but I think we got it under control.

We have three boxes of stuff for my 1-year-old niece in the attic, one box of stuff we're saving for my sister-in-law (who plans quit teaching and open a daycare this fall), one large box to go to the donation center, and a couple of small activity boxes to go to my daughter's classroom. We also put three boxes of stuff in the attic for when the kids get bored with the stuff in the closet, so we can cycle things through. We managed to get it pared down to the point where everything fits neatly on the shelves, and there are no piles of stuff on the floor. (It's a walk-in closet with shelves floor to ceiling; there is no reason it should ever be as full as it was.)

Then I'm gonna spend a full hour removing hair from my legs. Must be spring.

Today I'm gonna spend the second of two consecutive days talking about the real possibility of making a baby with the people who matter.  It included my sister asking me if I wanted her to keep her bumbo and other items.  Holy shit.  I have accoutrements in waiting.

A little story about baby related accoutrements:

A few years ago I was at my husband's grandma's house.  I love her so much, as I've noted elsewhere.  She's just one of my favorite people.  This was before her decline into dementia and at a point where I was still certain I would never want a child.  She had a beautiful quilted baby blanket of Pooh and friends, and she mentioned she didn't have anyone to give it to.  She typically made these to auction off at social functions, but this one was especially nice and it seemed a shame to just give it away.  For a reason not even formulated in my mind, I told her I wanted it.  She asked if it was for a friend, and I told her no, but that I would make sure it got used.  It was probably the first inkling I had that things where changing for me.  I had the quilt in a bag, in our closet for over a year, and would look at it and ask myself "why did I take this blanket," and a little voice inside me told me I wanted to have something from grandma to wrap my baby in.  Now that grandma's no longer able to make such beautiful quilts, I'm glad that somewhere inside me I had the wisdom to take it when I did.  It's one of only a couple things I've acquired that are in my home, but I've got my sister and bf saving all the additional accoutrements for me now.

Wow.  I'm still pretty WTF about all this.

today, I am going to attempt to make my mom's tomato salsa. Something seems really off, but I can't quite place it. I think the produce here is a lot crappier than there. Also I am bad at dicing veggies evenly/small enough.

My mom's salsa is the best tomato salsa ever. Oh my god, so good. Tomato, red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, balsamic vinegar. The vinegar is what takes it to the level where angels sing and play their little Mexican Food harps.

I was going to come in here and say what GKA said, but I wasn't going to do it as well as he did, to say nothing of how well s_s says stuff. So I'm going to go back to work, but first I'll dispense some cans.

I agree that side_show would rock the child-rearing.

On the subject of quilts, we have a nice one that our church made that it is very functional. We have a baby blanket that my wife's friend made of sock yarn that is just too gorgeous and soft to be spit upon by babies. Not sure what we will do with that one.

As a knitter/crocheter who has made baby things as gifts, I would say to go ahead and use it, and if it gets spit up on, so be it.

If it's sock yarn it is probably machine washable in cold on the gentle cycle, dry flat and all that jazz. But to be on the safe side you can hand-wash it with a little baby shampoo and cold water in the bathtub (if you don't have a deep laundry sink). Squish the water out (don't wring), then lay it on top of a big towel (fold the blanket in half if necessary), roll the towel up with the blanket inside it, and then step on the roll to skoosh the rest of the water into the towel.

But the key point is, use it use it use it. Your wife's friend made it for you made it to be wrapped around your baby, not to be looked at, and she will feel better knowing that something she spent a lot of time on is keeping your baby warm as she intended.
