When I lived in a tight neighborhood of postage-stamp sized lots on a slope, everybody parked in the street. We would put one car in the driveway and the other in the street because although they both technically fit in the driveway, it was very steep and I didn't like parking at the top of the slope. Also, we both worked various schedules and it was inconvenient to have to shuffle cars because somebody was always blocked in.

Sometimes the "family" that lived across the street from us (literally about a half-dozen Mexican men of questionable immigration status, plus two women and four kids) used to park their cars along their side of the street and also on our side, often blocking the mailbox. We would sometimes not get mail for a week at a time because of other peoples' cars in front of our house. Several times the mailman left our mail after three or four days with a nastygram letting us know our box was blocked, and he had to get OUT of his TRUCK (the horror) to deliver it. But what could we do? It wasn't our car, and even if we'd been able to tell which of the dudes owned it, none of them spoke English.

Then the house burned down, I think shortly after the people living there were evicted but I can't be sure. I know there was an investigation after the fire but I don't know what the result was. So glad we don't live there any more.

Now I live in a neighborhood where the lots have a lot of frontage, so usually even if people have short driveways there's plenty of room to park in front of your own house. We can get six cars in the driveway and five more on the street before we end up in front of someone else's property, it's pretty cool.

But yeah, I think there is a big difference between being in a place like my neighborhood, where you own everything right up to the street (there are no sidewalks, or even curbs), and a big city where the houses are close together and the area in front of your house is a crowded public street. Especially if there are marked public spaces on the pavement, nobody owns those. The only thing that irritates me when people park on the street in this neighborhood is sometimes my across-the-street neighbor's lawn guy parks his truck right across from my driveway, which makes it harder to back out. But otherwise, people are pretty considerate and don't block each others' mailboxes, driveways, or trash cans. But then, we have the space to be able to pull up a few feet if needed.

This is very strange to me. My mailman has to come up the stairs and put the mail through a hole in my front door.

get this: the post office in my town is so small/poor, they can only afford to deliver mail to half of the people.  the other half has to go and get their own shit from a box at the office.

This is the most confusing bit of the whole thing to me. But our posties tend to get around on bright red 125cc Hondas.

FUCK-WHAT!?!

Get used to it.  The Post Office is saying it needs to close half of it's offices. That's half.  1/2 They are probably going to do away with Saturday delivery soon as well.  And they want to raise the postage rates. But don't worry, Congress is on the problem.

yeah i live ten minutes from downtown so all yall's disparaging "hoothafukk innacity" front curb remarks means whatevski. my 'hood is a proto-suburb relatively recently intro'd to gentrification, and the old black couple that lives next to us told us they were thrilled when white people started moving back in, yeah that was like 'wtf? welcome home i guess lol' when we heard it

anyway we have third-of-an-acre lots narrow on the street side, plus a driveway and a hydrant. the house is on a hill above the street, with a hedgerow on the border from the neighbor's yard. parking at my house means one of three things: turning around in my gated backyard, scraping your rims on the shallow concrete walls of the driveway, or risking theft and vandalization by parking on the street.

look do you have any idea how much i've drunk, i hung out at howl at the moon after a dive bar with three dollar peeburs. i love you all but let meh beh

Choop's drunk again.

We do have one cool thing here in Portland - if you have to redo the sidewalks you have to make sure the old-timey iron ring that folks tied their horses up to gets reinstalled. (Plus most of the sidewalks have dates in them from the late 1800s early 1900s.) My mail also comes through a slot in the door. First time I've had that and I think it's the jam.

Today I'm going to want to post birthday wishes for Hobot but it's starting to get depressing, posting for people who aren't here, so I'm going to leave it to someone else if they want to.

Right now I'm watching the house across the back lane get torn down!  It's been empty for years, so it's good to see it go, but it's probably less than half a foot from the houses on either side in some spots, so I'm quite interested to see what if anything they're doing to prevent damage to the neighbour's houses.

Now back to taking out my problems.

Someone needs to compile a video of Lana saying Yup!

Edit:  Of course someone already has.
