Who likes Southern Rock?

Me. (I do.)

Shirtless, slightly effeminate men prancing around on stage? Yes, please.

But this doesn't sound like Southern rock to me. I understand that this is a rock band whose members happen to be from the South, but they *sound* like Van Halen meets GnR. I'd call them a hair band more than a Southern rock group.

Also, I didn't know Tom Baker played the drums.

I always understood Southern Rock to mean Creedence, Lynynynyrd Sykynyryd, possibly ZZ Top at a stretch. Basically rock music with possibly Southern US themes and influence from country and swamp rock.

Am I mislead?

That's what I thought, too, Jude. But Paul says we're wrong. Again, I think that we define the genre differently -- I define it based solely on a certain "sound," while Paul defines it based on the group's place in Southern culture. Valid differences, to be sure, and when phrased that way, I'm less inclined to disagree. I mean, basically, his criteria is "songs by rock bands that are from the South," and mine is, "a collection of songs that sound like they could have been written by a band from the South, and also rock."

Lets take a brief survey, shall we? Which artists from this list are part of "Southern Rock?" Use whatever criteria you like, but please define it for us as you do so.

Lynyrd Skynyrd
ZZ Top
Bad Company
The Allman Brothers Band
Kenny Wayne Shephard
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Jimi Hendrix
Joe Walsh
Big Brother and the Holding Company/Janis Joplin
Charlie Daniels Band
.38 Special
Kansas
George Thorogood
Kid Rock

Lynyrd Skynyrd  -- Yes, w/the Allmans pretty much created the genre.
ZZ Top -- yes
Bad Company -- no
The Allman Brothers Band -- yes
Kenny Wayne Shephard -- yes, I guess
Stevie Ray Vaughn -- sort of, although I consider SRV more of a bluesman than a southern rocker.
Jimi Hendrix -- no
Joe Walsh -- no
Big Brother and the Holding Company/Janis Joplin -- no
Charlie Daniels Band -- not really.  I'd call CDB a country band that had a crossover hit.
.38 Special -- I suppose, in a cheesy way.
Kansas -- nope
George Thorogood -- nope
Kid Rock -- nope

In other southern rock news, I'm going to see the Drive By Truckers next month.  Wooooo!

Aug's comment reminds me of a recent argument where one guy was saying CCR aren't Southern, they're from California, they have nothing to do with the south.
and the other guy was like, but they play southern rock!

and I wanted to be like THAT'S THE WHOLE THING, THEIR MUSIC IS THEIR WEIRD UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT SOUTHERN MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE, LISTEN TO THAT WEIRD ACCENT HE DOES. But for some reason I didn't say anything.

So, something occurred to me.

The point of having genres and categories for music is so that you can group them in such a way that if you enjoy several songs in that group, you are extremely likely to enjoy the others. So if the groupings are based on culture or geography, it seems less useful than groupings based on similar sounds or themes.

But! The latter is much more subjective, and reasonable people may disagree on which pieces sound like they belong together for whatever reason.

So now I don't know what to think.

is that the nuge'?

No, it's Black Oak Arkansas.  Says so right in the Title.

Funny Nugent connection though.  That's Tommy Aldridge playing drums.  He went on to a very illustrious career playing for Pat Travers Band, Ozzy, Whitesnake, etc...

I've seen him in concert 5 times.  Twice each with Pat Travers and Ozzy and once with Whitesnake.

I googled him a couple of years back and he was playing with Nugent at the time.
