Whoa: my old roommates are opening for Guided by Voices

Niiiiiiiiice. My one regret from my musical career (assigned from never getting a record contract, though that may have been a mixed blessing) was that we never did a really good opening slot for anyone of note. The biggest one was probably when we opened for Life Sex & Death, who were actually on Warner Brothers at the time, but have you heard of them? Probably not.

During that era the band Murphy's Law came to our home club, and a local reggae/ska band opened for them. Those guys were fine at what they did, but completely the wrong fit for Murphy's Law, and the crowd just kind of tolerated them during their set. A loud thrash-punk band that sang about beer and other goofy shit? Dammit, we would have been PERFECT for that slot.

Sounds like he adjusted the truss road so that it would intonate correctly, but was afraid you'd be pissed off because he was fuck*ng with your guitar.

Definitely. Damn, I only lived with those goofballs for a month, and their apartment was disgusting, but they were truly sweet guys.

Earlier in the week a co-worker said he was trying to get into new music. I referred him to my end-of-year playlists on Spotify (which I have posted in this topic in the past).

Yesterday he reported back on listening to them.
Him: "There was one thing I liked... Nick..."
Me: Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators?
Him: "No, it was Nickel something. Nickelback?"
Me: "No."
Him: "Pretty sure that was it..."
Me: "NO."

Upon further review, it was Nickel Creek. Yeah that's different.

He also actively disliked the Bon Iver song on last year's mix. Can't say I blame him; that's not a good starting point for Bon Iver, and that specific sound isn't for everybody. But what I like about it is that it could have been another pretty acoustic guitar and etherial keyboard song--you can hear that in the tune--but he chose to take it in a completely different direction.

Which reminds me, I never posted my 2016 mix here. Y'all probably saw it on Facebook a few months ago, but anyway:

I'm listening to Kepi Ghoulie's most recent album.

Big thumbs up!

I had gotten to a point where I couldn't enjoy the Smiths anymore. Then I spent an entire month at work listening to guitar pop bands with wimpy singers. I did not make the connection at first... but now I'm in such an intense Smiths phase. They're so good!

I know, The Smiths are infuriating to me. I think I might really like them except I can't listen to them for more than 15 minutes without wanting to punch Morrisey in the face. Shut the fuck up you whiny little shit!

Somehow I had never heard this Chris Bell (of Big Star) solo album. My new friend from my neighborhood suggested it to me and she is very happy with her boyfriend. and it's really nice to meet someone who likes cool stuff who lives right on my block.

I don't understand how people can make something so beautiful with just a guitar.

Also really into this video and I'm not sure why. I mean, other than She Loves You being a perfect song.

Is anyone else here really into Jenn Wasner (of Wye Oak fame)'s solo project Flock of Dimes?

Both the videos she's released from her album are really wonderful to listen to and to look at:

Yes.

For such a powerful voice she looks really nonchalant in her film clips.

someone on twitter mentioned it was the 50th anniversary of an album by the Incredible String Band. I'd never heard them so I found the album...

jesus christ this song is wrecking me. This album is really good.

I've heard of this band for a long time, but never got around to listening to them. Dang, not at all what I expected. Loving this song.

I know I bring this up at least once a year, but it blows me away how the more experiences I have in life the more intensely certain pieces of art speak to me.

A few years ago I went to Boston and spent a few hours in the museum of fine arts, where this painting totally killed me. In person it is ENORMOUS and I just got slapped in the face by how lifelike it looks... how candid their poses look, like an off-the-cuff photograph. I've always liked Sargent but I think of this one a lot. This week I was in Boston and thought of the painting so I read the wikipedia article... it says a lot of people think it's an allegory about puberty, with the girls retreating into their own world as they get older (vs the guileless toddler flopped on the floor).

On the same theme, aging and childhood, as a kid and teenager I hated "She's Leaving Home." I couldn't tell what I was supposed to feel and it annoyed me.
Now it really affects me every time. So beautiful. There are a few Beatles songs like this and A Day in the Life that are these perfect little glimpses into life and the older I get the more I love them.

There is also this crazy new remix of Sgt Pepper-- not trying to change the songs, just making a new mix with modern technology to preserve more of the sound quality of individual instruments that got lost to the magic of the magnetic tape process. It's so good, even if it's all in my head.
If I think about it too hard I'm probably going to have a dumb opinion about how the magnetic tape quality is better. So. Preemptively gonna stop thinking about it and just listen to the music. I'd say most songs sound better, She's Leaving Home sounds kind of weird, Good Morning sounds strangely compressed and bad.
