I saw Best Coast girl (Bethany Cosentino) smoking out of an apple.
Pitchfork was pretty awesome.
There was a period of time in high school when the foodstore next to the school could not keep apples in stock fast enough to keep up with the bonanza of smoking out of apples. I don't remember how it started or why it stopped, but the age of smoking out of apples is one of my more bizarre memories. Good to hear its still going on somewhere.

pitchfork was awesome. Just really well run, everyone was really courteous and helpful, they handed out free water in excess, bands were great, crowd was great. Bought a cheap poster and too many beers/water bottles. No cool t-shirts, that was the only down side.

Saw:
best coast (pretty good, but made me realize a lot of the songs are more background-music for me)
pavement (AMAZING, AND I WAS SO CLOSE TO THE STAGE)
majer lazer (not really my thing)
beach house (not really my thing, but a pretty good performance)
modest penis (kind of bad, my friends who like them said they didn't play enough of their older stuff. plus isaac brock was drunk, and not in a fun way)
liars (OK)
Real Estate (didn't realize how much I liked them! pretty awesome.)
Tallest Man on Earth (don't understand why singer-songwriters make me so mad. Part of it is definitely feeling sexually threatened by them. But seriously, even his music bothered me to an unreasonable degree)
LCD Soundsystem (pretty fun)
Panda Bear-- man, this was really disappointing. didn't really go anywhere, didn't play any songs I recognized.
jon spencer blues explosion-- sounded pretty good from where I was eating my overpriced burger.
raekwon-- I can't tell if I just don't "get" live hip-hop, or the members of Wu-Tang are just too old. Second member I've seen, second mediocre show.
Lightning Bolt-- really awesome. as they played all of the girlfriends kissed their boyfriends and ran away. except my girlfriend, because she is awesome.

all in all, a great time. really well organized, and I always felt like I could get as close as I wanted (except for pavement, my girlfriend couldn't see for most of the show.)
generally just great. only marred by me being a stupid idiot who gets upset about stupid things.

I am pretty sunburned, but mostly I tanned due to constant re-application of sunscreen.

Of all those bands, I... like Modest penis pretty well.

I'm jealous of the line-up but I hate festivals, so I'm never able to convince myself to go.

Seeing Pavement in September. So excited. Same place I saw them 13 years ago.

Your Modest penis comment reminds me of back in the day, back when they used to open for Built to Spill a lot and so I'd see them a lot. When Isaac was drunk they were terrible. So fuck*ng terrible. But when he was sober, they were fuck*ng amazing. Also, I liked their songs more back then. They just recently played a free show here in Salt Lake, but the place was set up so terribly and there were so many people I couldn't even see the stage. But it didn't sound too great.

I didn't even realize Jon Spencer were still playing. Saw them a long time ago, too. Really fun.

I'm realizing that I am so old.

I haven't seen Raekwon but I've seen Ghostface and GZA, and both shows were so boring. I saw Wu-Tang pretty recently, and that was really fun. Who knows. In fact, aside from that Wu-Tang show, I think the only other hip-hop act that I've ever really enjoyed live is the Roots, which maybe makes sense because they produce records like a rock band does, or used to anyway. And I'm used to those kind of shows.

yeah, the other Wu-Tang member I saw was GZA. Boring, turned up to the show over an hour late, stopped some songs half way through.

Yeah, same with when I saw him. He was supposed to perform Liquid Swords in its entirety, and I guess we got every song but like only half of most of them. It was like he didn't give a fuck at all.

And I forgot to comment on this:

Panda Bear-- man, this was really disappointing. didn't really go anywhere, didn't play any songs I recognized.

I'm disappointed to hear this, but not too surprised. I saw Animal Collective last year, and although I had a great time (I was really fucked up), on reflection, of what I could remember anyway, the show was pretty lame. In fact I remember thinking that they were just kind of jamming, in their own kind of way. Like some kind of weird indie electronic Phish. And I've really liked their studio stuff. So it's no too surprising that Panda Bear would be like this.

That is even disappointing to even read that Panda Bear was not good.  I guess that is just the nature of that music.

I would see Animal Collective in Long Island City (Queens) in like two weeks, but that is the week I'm camping up on the Woodstock trip.  Man what a hippy-esque sentence.

Anyway, I listened to Louis Prima all day.

What a waste of an apple.

Blazing out of an apple is pretty good.  You can still eat it afterwords.  Not that much resin builds up in just a single smoke.  Gives it a mesquite taste, I always thought resin sometimes smelled like Wendy's BBQ sauce anyway.

Better than an aluminum can.  Got to blaze on a lunch break, just smoke an apple, then eat it.  Ultimate workday refreshment.

I went to see an acquaintances' band tonight, and instead I had my mind blown slash raped.

Two of my best friends are brothers in a band together.  The band used to have a lot of promise, but honestly they have completely stalled.  We saw the acquaintances' band play we and went to another bar, Tuesday night, bit after midnight.  The older brother who was the most recent addition to band was annoyed that he found out that the band wanted to re-record something without much consultation with him.  The dude said to his younger brother, the founder of the band, in complete anger and totally out of character, "FUCK this band," and walked through the bathroom door we were all standing right next to.  He is a sometimes a hothead and he slammed the bathroom door with probably 30% of his strength.  An 18 by 18 inch picture frame of the t-shirts the bar sells fell off the shelf above the bathroom door, it free fell, spinning, about six feet towards the earth's gravitational pull, and the corner of the metal picture frame spiked the younger brother, the band founder, right in the top of the head, rebounded off some dude's chest and the glass shattered into a hundred pieces right at my feet.

I looked at the younger brother, the man who is basically my kindred spirit (we share a birthday 366 days apart), and I wondered what hurt him more, his brother's (possibly my oldest friend) comment, or the moderate concussion he just received.  Within five seconds every pore in his face was pouring sweat and I wasn't sure exactly which reason was the cause.  I stood there with a half drank bottle of Bud in hand, sober, with absolutely no clue how to react, jaw dropped in the stark display of reality the universe had bestowed upon me.

"Fuck your band," was not so hurtful enough that the brother had endure a falling picture frame corner to the top of the head.  For minutes, you could see in his eyes that he had no idea what had happened, on any level.  I witnessed the frankest display of shock and uncertainty that I could have imagined.

I had a conversation with a horribly unlucky friend in Atlantic City city two months ago.  I said, "you have to look at it this way... it would be less surprising - more probable - that the same bet pays off a million times in a row than the fact that we simply exist, right now, right here.  It's so improbable that we can simply converse like this, that there is no stroke of luck that cannot possibly be made apparent in your life.  Magic may very well exist, there is no streak of probability than can surprise me any longer."

Take this as the ramblings of a drunkard if you will, but keep in mind, that I have a degree in medical science as a doctor.  I'm a fuck*ng doctor, and I've observed in great detail exactly what makes life what it is.

Tonight I am convinced.  Simply existing is the peak of improbability.  No coincidence the universe throws at me can possibly surprise me anymore.  As Louis C.K. said a few weeks ago, "I've seen too much."

Thanks for reading my night's recap.  After about fifteen minutes of tension outside the bar, I broke the heft of the night's occurrences with a laugh, and to tie in an actual Achewood reference, the three of us ate 4:30 am dinner at Uncle George's Greek Taverna.  I had lemon sole, side of cold garlic mashed potato, but we had all overfilled on Italian bread with a generous side of tzatziki for dipping.

Yeah, the list of successful groups with brothers working together is long.  That don't mean it was easy.

I was agreeing with you Paul.  The Davies brothers used to beat the crap out of each other all the time.  And the Gibb brothers were even worse.  They used to make each other wear cheesy looking white suits.
