Damn, this guitar tone is concentrated sex.

In my estimation, THIS should rank high on the list of greatest performances in rock and roll history.

Needs more tambourines.

That is always a good feeling.

My acoustic guitar, which I just realized I've had for 13 years, is sounding awful lately. Actually I guess it has had this problem for a few years now. The low E rattles around and sounds out of tune even when it's in tune. One day I'll have money and figure out what is going on there. I am pretty sure it has to be something wrong with the neck, which sounds... expensive.

My 12-string sounds increasingly like a mandolin or a banjo, which I find disturbing. Ask me how much I feel like buying a new guitar, though.

Ash I'll ask my gear-whore bandmate what he'd look for in a practice amp.

Probably you just need to turn the truss rod a little bit.  Got an allen wrench?

That new Replacements book was pretty great, but he weirdly never addressed the understanding I always had of their career-- they made a couple of amazing albums and then got more and more boring. I thought this was the standard storyline, it certainly was among my college friends. Hootenanny, Let it Be, and Tim were full of great songs that combined the energy of punk with some of the pop craft and complexity of classic rock. They also had a smattering of annoying noisy numbers and clunkers. Then they got further and further from that blend, with more and more boring songs that didn't have the same special spark. There was more support from their label, more of a push to get them on radio and MTV, etc... but it was too late, their best albums were behind them. In the book there's this idea that Paul Westerberg was getting better and better at writing songs, and the band was somehow holding him back. If that's true, why weren't his solo albums big smash hits? Because there are lots of singer-songwriter dudes strumming guitars, but only one Replacements.

Separately, I think sometimes about how there are a few bands in this category-- if you tell me a band "sounds like the Replacements" it makes me want to listen to them less, not more. I also feel this way about Neil Young, off the top of my head. I need to think about that part more.

Went to see a show with a great opener and a boring headliner-- the headliner was Allison Crutchfield's new band. I got there and wondered if her sister, Katie from Waxahatchee, would be there. I looked around and thought, haha, I wonder which one of these messy dark-haired women in a denim jacket with bangs is her. Every girl there had such a similar look. And then I looked to my left and she was THERE, unmistakably, because somehow even though she was dressed/groomed pretty much the same as everyone else there, when I saw her I just knew THAT IS A fuck*ng ROCK STAR.

There was this other band that fuck*ng blew me away, but their album online didn't impress me at all. Kind of confused. The lead singer/guitarist had this shimmery guitar thing going on and sang kind of like Michael Stipe, but the rest of the band was way punkier and had a lot of energy and rhythm. Every video of them on youtube has totally blown-out audio and doesn't capture it at all. Maybe I was standing in the speaker sweet spot and I'm the only person who thought it sounded that good.

On more than one occasion, I have seen a band live and really dug them, then bought their album and been disappointed. Sometimes it's just hard to capture that live feel.

Also, I am kind of into this new Bon Iver record. It's pretentious as hell but weirdly beautiful.

I usually have the opposite problem.  See favorite band, they suck, I hate them for a month, then I go back to liking them.

What are you playing it through?

I plunked down $12 for this and it showed up yesterday.  Nifty little gizmo.  I had been using my Zoom 505 as a headphone amp (and still will, it's fun to play with all the options) but this little guy is cool.  I got it to take on our vacation which is coming up along with my utility guitar.
