Really? Obviously it's a total non-issue around here due to lack of Spaniards.
Not that I don't live in a country full of racist hicks, I'm pretty sure if there was a move to change all road signs to also read mandarin or something there'd be issues. It seems especially banal a complaint for websites, it's not as if you even have to see it unless you deliberately seek it out.

and that's the thing: nobody's removing the english-language road signs; they're adding spanish-language signs to live in tandem with the english ones that are already there and aren't going anywhere. nobody's forcing anybody to learn to speak spanish. i'm just glad i didn't waste my high school language lessons on french or german.

The example of road signs reminds me of an interesting thing, which is that in Japan, I was surprised to find English along with Japanese on street signs, subway signs, etc.

Unlike the US, which is a country full of people descended from immigrants, Japan has always been inhospitable to immigrants, even legal ones, but they have no problem with the idea of having more than one language on stuff. And they're not irrationally afraid of English becoming more dominant than their language - it already is. Still, this has not destroyed their country - they have no problem keeping their own culture pretty damn distinct.

In comparison it's weird that people in the world's dominant country, speaking the language that is basically the worldwide common tongue, are so afraid of being taken over by this terrifying invading language. We are so isolated, and life is so easy for us already speaking the dominant language and not having to learn another, that we don't realize that multilingualism is the norm in most other parts of the world.

Because in Japan, English has a generally positive connotation (it's the language of Western businessmen and educated Japanese), whereas in the US, Spanish has a negative connotation (it's the language of migrant workers and illegal immigrants). It's not xenophobia or isolationism so much as racism and classism, IMHO.
