You're all forgetting the "P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress pay their taxes..." part. Once each Senator and Representative pays the $74,766,355,140 in taxes they owe, this plan will be completely paid for.

That your grandpa could send an email as a tool to make "old person gripes" makes me feel really old.

My beloved grandma died before desktop computers were things commonly in a home.  All my grandparents were gone before hotmail was a thing.  I doubt any of them ever saw or touched a desktop computer.

The only comfort I take is that your grandpa at least wanted you to use "old" technology to communicate.

My Mom basically does not use computers, and my grandparents never touched a computer, and may never have even seen one.

Grampa using email to send old person gripes is inspiring! I wonder what amazing new technology will be invented in time for us to send old person gripes with?

I am insanely proud of my dad in this regard, actually:

He goes on a local right-wing politics message board and trolls people as a communist.

To be fair, he used to do the thing on the CB radio when I was a kid but still.

Dude is adapting with the times admirably.

My mom is afraid of computers - the fear was of the "if I do the wrong thing it will somehow self destruct and possibly blow up" ilk.  I kept trying to assure her that even the worst mistakes when using a computer can be undone or corrected, but with her illness, the fear and anxiety there was pretty strong.

The last time I had any real contact with my parents, which was several years ago, they basically didn't understand computers either, even though they had one.  I remember at one point turning it on to check my email, and all this virus porn popped up, and my mom was all "just ignore that - I don't know what it is, but it shows up every time we turn it on."  I'm talking about 20+ windows of porno popping up at start up, and the same windows re popping  up over again, multiple times after closing them out.

I'm all "your computer has a virus."

"No. It's just pictures that come up."

"Yes.  That is what a virus is.  Unwanted stuff that comes up without your control and slows your computer down is a virus."

"I thought a virus was something that made your computer not work?"

"Do you consider your computer to be working properly if several pages of unwanted hardcore porn slow your computer down and pop up every time you turn it on or attempt to use it?"

"No!"

"How long has this been happening?"

"Oh I don't know - a few months.  It can't be a virus.  We have anti virus."

I checked, and sure enough they did have some anit-virus software - which had never been turned on or updated in the many years since they bought the computer.  The software was beyond fixing whatever virus they had, and my mom was so upset that they had to pay a hundred bucks to have the virus cleared up that she mostly avoided the computer entirely after that.

The sad thing was that my dad also didn't realize it was virus, even though he was a university professor at the time and the one who at least understood the basics of email usage.  My dad figured out how to use ebay with my help though, which says something.  When he figured out ebay, my mom asked me teach her to buy something on ebay too, and she accidentally clicked "buy it now" on an Elton John CD, and got scared and didn't want to ever try again.

Oh my god.  I have a lot of clarity on this because it's in the past, but thinking back on this, I haven't been this frustrated about my mom's anxiety disorder in a long time...  It's sad how your own fear can become a prison.

Was it the one with "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues"? Because I can understand that.

The great Attack on Christmas straw man has reared it's ugly head once again this year.

Quote
Be brave say Merry Christmas

Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land, Not a Christian
was praying
Nor taking a stand

See the PC Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.

The children were
told by their schools not to sing, About Shepherds
and Wise Men and Angels and things.

It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
'December 25th is just a ' Holiday '

Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!

CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!

Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.

As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was nowhere to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears

You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.

Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton!

At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.

And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace

The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.

So as you celebrate 'Winter Break' under your 'Dream Tree'
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.

Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Not Happy Holiday

Please, all Christians join together and wish everyone you meet during the holidays A MERRY CHRISTMAS

Christ is The Reason for the Christ-mas Season!

You know, to the extent something like that is encouraging Christians to respect and follow their own traditions, I don't have a problem with it.

It's the butthurt that they aren't allowed to use the government and other institutions to promote their religion that burns me up.  Look, dumbass.  Nobody's posting soldiers at the front door of your church keeping you from worshiping the way you think proper.  No commissars are kicking down your front door and ripping down your Christmas decorations.  The government's not burning Bibles.

You don't have the right to inflict your religion on anybody else, much less everybody else.  You have the right to say and think what you want.  Retailers have the right to say and think what they want (and if that means staying neutral so they don't offend a significant portion of their potential customer base, so be it.)  And the government is required by the Constitution (which you so-called conservatives claim to revere so much -- at least until following it produces a result you don't like) to stay neutral.

What kind of God do these people worship?  Apparently one who needs support from the federal government and major retailers.

Bah.  Humbug.

I like the random injection of supposed left-wingers here and there, like no one else is marketing their books or other media during the holidays.

Also, Madonna still puts out CDs?

Well based on the hyphenation on "Christ-mas" this year the Catholic churches are going to be absolutely jammed and the churches of the various other christian sects will be deserted. C'mon people, let's put the "mass" back in christmas.

Back when I was a bell-ringer for the Salvation Army I went out of my way to say "happy holidays" to anybody that wished me a "merry christmas"
