It's called vitiligo, and it's the same condition Michael Jackson said he had. (A common treatment is to depigment all the skin to achieve an even skin tone, which is what Jackson says he did.)

I hate to link to this article at a site called "mjfanclub.net," but it's obviously a reprint of something from a reputable source, which is uncited (and I can't find in its original form online). It explains the disorder more clearly than any of the more scholarly pieces I found.

I have no idea what the orange stuff is, though, or why it would be all over his head and shirt every single day. That is weird.

She explained that where she's from (Caribbean islands) they had a sort of nut that everyone called "n-words."

My grandmother still thinks that everybody calls brazil nuts "n-word toes"

My mom was telling me just recently a story about Brazil nuts being called that. I was saying how I thought it was awesome that back in the '50s, my grandfather (who was a minister) would often host traveling Black ministers in their home. At the time, even in Northwestern Ohio, they couldn't stay in most white-owned hotels (even if they could afford it) and most other white pastors wouldn't allow Black people to sleep in their homes, eat dinner with their families, etc. My grandfather was an exception, and apparently he took a lot of flak for it, especially since (and this almost makes me ill to say) he had four daughters.

But when I told Mom how I thought Grampa was unusually progressive considering his place and time, she said, "Yeah, that's true, but it's not like he never used the n-word or anything. I mean, he would never call a person that, but I remember once, a Black preacher came to stay with us, and we had these bowls of nuts out, and some of them were Brazil nuts. Well, my dad used to call them 'n-toes,' but not the letter 'N,' you know -- that word you can't say. So that's what we called them too, I didn't know that word could refer to a person, I thought it just meant that kind of nut. So I told my sister, "hey, give me one of those 'n-toes,' and my Mom went white and shooed us out of the room and said, 'Don't say that, don't say that!' It wasn't 'til I was in high school that I realized why."

Still pretty mild on the racism scale, especially for the 1950s, but it sure is interesting how times have changed. (For the better, but we ain't there yet.)

A couple of years ago there was a guy with vitiligo trying out for the Cincinnati Bengals (as shown on the Hard Knocks HBO show).  His was a lot like the news anchor's in that article, and it was oddly unsettling.  It made reading his facial expressions difficult, since your eye kept getting drawn to the patchiness.  I can certainly see why the afflicted folks feel stigmatized by their condition.

I have no idea what the orange stuff is, though, or why it would be all over his head and shirt every single day. That is weird.
Just because someone has a legit skin condition doesn't mean he isn't batshit crazy on top of it.

I actually have a couple of small patches of vitiligo that are usually covered by my clothing, so it doesn't really bother me. But you can bet I watch it religiously to see if it spreads. Apparently there treatments that can slow it down, but there's no "cure."

My mom has the opposite -- a few dark patches on her face caused by a surge of hormones from when she was pregnant with me. It's not terribly uncommon. I have a small spot on one cheek that appeared while I was pregnant with Hero -- about a quarter-inch of slightly darkened skin. Mine is hardly noticeable (Pedro just noticed it a few months ago and I had to show him old photos to prove it had been there for years), but Mom is really self-conscious about hers, and won't ever be seen without makeup.

I was more concerned with delivery resolving the diabeetus and my blazing case of PUPPP (an itchy rash that develops in the third trimester for which there is no relief).

For the love of God, why doesn't our species just lay eggs in a pond and leave them there?

If we did that, how would we guilt them into taking care of us when we're old?

It happens all the time, it's just that the give-birth-in-a-pond-and-then-walk-away gene doesn't get propagated much for some reason.

did my coworker just tell me that his boyfriend was killed in front of him on the street for being gay? I think he did. He said this in such a passing way that I feel like I misheard.

Also: that one of our gruff coworkers was a crack dealer in the big south side projects in the 80s.

Did he work in the pit or the towers?  Was he on the money?

Interesting she doesn't have a .gov email. Maybe that's part of keeping it profoundly secret.
