i consider my decision to stop eating chick-fil-a a lifestyle choice. i made it years ago, when i first heard of their policies, and haven't been back to one since. i won't go back until their corporate policies change, and probably their leadership as well, since either without the other is most likely lip service.

i have zero issue with their CEO's right to free speech. he should have zero issue with mine. however, i'm also an opponent of corporate personhood, so i disbelieve that a company has a right to free speech, or any rights for that matter. even then, my wallet-vote against chick-fil-a holds meaning to me and to my gay friends and family members.

but i'm also the kind of kook that tries not to see films starring scientologists (though that's getting harder and harder these days) because that's one scary muffuggin' cult that needs more money like a kindergarten needs an electric chair.

civil rights are a hugely important issue to me, and that's why i'm currently choosing to focus on promoting gay rights and womens' rights in and eliminating homophobia and sexism from american culture. i wish i could do more than i'm currently able.

murder and abduction and cultism are also very important issues to me, and always will be; since they are but three tools used by the cult of xenu, i'm going to continue that wallet-vote against until i have no further need.

when women and gays achieve actual equality, maybe then i'll go have a pickley chicken sandwich. or biscuits and gravy at a cracker barrel. or shop thriftily at salvation army, or be overcharged for a tee shirt or pencil eraser at urban outfitters. until then, i'll buy a pair of jeans at jcpenney and a stack of boxer briefs at target and (oddly) watch a disney film on cable.

finally: the only reason i don't drink starbuck's coffee is because the flavor is terrible. everything else i've read or heard about the company seems pretty much in line with what in my opinion is how a company should comport itself. even if i do happen to support unionism.

I actually agree with the ACLU that it's not cool for municipalities to ban CFA for the CEO's stance. Individuals can do whatever the hell they want, but for the government to crack down on opinions is bad stuff.

But the thing that makes me most apeshit about this whole thing is people like Sarah Palin saying the liberal boycott of CFA is an assault on free speech. What the FUCK?! How many crazed right-wing Christian groups have huge lists of companies they want their members to boycott because they did something that offended them? Do you consider those an assault on free speech too? No, of course not, because those are people you like (or who you want to like you). It all depends on whose ox is being gored, don't it.

Is the whole 'municipality bans CFA' bit a ruse, though? At least a willful misinterpretation of various mayors' open letters? Frex, the Boston one: he strongly suggests that if CFA set up a store there, it wouldn't do very well due to the strong public opinion there. A mayor saying "You won't be welcomed here" is no sort of ban, and I haven't heard any news that these mayors have approached their legislatures to appeal for actual impediments to chickfila setting up shops.

But as for me, I don't give enough of a shit to try to explain to my kids that we can't go to their favorite restaurant any more because some guy who has almost nothing to do with our local franchise doesn't like it when two boys get married.

I don't know that I've ever eaten Chick Fil A, but I'm not going to start now.  I don't want to have to explain to my gay child why I'm spending money supporting a company that thinks she ought to be treated as a second class citizen.

I am tired of people who don't understand the concept of free speech. You are free to say what you want. People are also free to react however they want to what you say.  We don't have a guaranteed right to be loved for our opinions.

Truth. There's been an utterly stupid debate on DC sports blogs about people who should "O!" (for the Orioles) during the National Anthem at Nationals games. The anti-side says a) you're in Washington, not Baltimore, and b) it's kind of disrespectful to the anthem, so cut that shit out. One guy on the pro-O side just posts over and over again, "First amendment First Amendment First Amendment." Well, what fuck*ng ever. No one is suggesting that the government establish a law to prevent you from yelling O during the anthem. It comes off as "I can continue to do this thing that annoys you, and you can't stop me! Nyeah!"
