i saw Looper in october when i was out in SLC visiting my lady.  its a really cool sc-fi/thriller.  i just watched a rad documentary by Ice-T called Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap.  Inev and Keef are some folks i know who would be interested, for sure.  also, maybe Nabu?

My life's tedium caught up with me so I spent the weekend watching movies in a darkened bedroom taking swigs. I really like absurd, silly comedies and profanity, and was pleasantly surprised by these two:

21 Jump Street. Only marginally remembered the TV series (yes, it ran down here for a while). Found a lot to like -- seriously, I'll highly recommend any movie with a sequence in which a character yells FUCK MILES DAVIS! and then jumps through a gong. JOnah Hill was very good, and most of the peripheral cast had their moments too.

The Watch. This one got mostly bad reviews but I loved it. I don't know, I enjoyed seeing the cast just riffing and being silly, and I honestly think they blazed a new trail for comedy with the scene in which they fuck around with an alien corpse. Lovely profanity, too. Vince Vaughn -- so good. The weird English dude, Richard Ayoade: small part, killed with almost every line. Overall I got bored with the "film" parts, and was mostly waiting between the plot points so the characters could come back to their foul-mouthed antics.

I just saw Olympus Has Fallen. It's really one of the dumbest movies I've seen in quite some time. They do blow up a lot of shit though.

I've seen the trailer a few times, and I'd be disappointed if it wasn't really dumb.

I saw Life of Pi. There's a sloth at the very beginning. It's downhill from there.

jay-ell and I saw "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." It was a very good try at an unfilmable book. That thing deserved a miniseries or something. Confusing as all get-out. And I read the book. I loved that book. I could NOT keep the suspects straight. Some books should just be books. Even when people like them.

i think i have a new favorite genre: small comedies. i caught Wanderlust again on HBO and though i know a lot of people dislike jennifer aniston, i think that movie's pretty damn great.

another i caught (netflix maybe?) was one called safety not guaranteed, starring mark duplass from the league and aubrey plaza from parks&rec. not the funniest, but cute and sweet, with a couple great laughs.

pedro: the swedish films are actually pretty well done, and fairly true to the books. i haven't seen the american one because it shouldn't have been made. i understand why it was, having grown up with people that couldn't abide subtitles and one cousin who hates foreign accents so much she can't even watch braveheart. latent racism, i guess.

Having some trouble trying to finish this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1971352/

It's infuriating and exasperating. I keep having to pause it every 20 minutes to do something else. The fact that it really happened is the messed up icing in this fucked up cake:

The Mount Washington incident happened about 30 miles from us.  It got a lot of media coverage at the time.

One for the horror & violence crowd: "Funny Games" (the original, from 1997 -- although it seems the remake is identical, virtually a frame by frame reshoot with added Naomi Wattness) ---> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119167/

Two soft spoken young men take a family hostage and things unhinge in major ways. What Michael Haneke, the director, has accomplished here is that the viewing experience is way more harrowing than what's usual in this type of fare. Dude knows his tricks. Also, after you finish seeing it, it's pretty clear that the movie is... well, pointless, little more than a genre exercise, but there's a lot to like in it individually (especially if you're into movie analysis, semiotics etc).

i can't get in to movies like this. i mean, i saw one of the faces of death movies when i was 18, and maybe it scarred me? but i don't see the point in torture porn. i haven't seen any of the saw franchise either, nor anything by rob zombie.

what worries me is that there's no story, and all i'm looking at is gore and trauma with no payoff

100% with you on that one. If it wasn't Haneke, a director I've always been curious about, I wouldn't have bothered.

As a rule I dislike movies.  I like The Big Lebowski, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and one of the two Japanese movies that The Man without a Name trilogy is based on.  Those are the only movies I have fully enjoyed in my life.  I especially hate what I would call horror movies, but maybe just gory movies?  Like Jason or something.  That said, I really enjoyed Saw, didnt really think it was gory at all.  And then I watched this other movie called Cube that was awesome.  Now people keep trying to get me to watch Seven.  That's all.

Likewise. I love Roger Ebert's review of the torture-porn film "Captivity," which included the sentence "Everyone associated with this movie should be ashamed of themselves."
