man, Keith, you like the kind of movies i really want to like, but actually can't stand. So long! Big Lebowski I like... now... but had to watch a lot of times to appreciate. Westerns? Old Japanese movies? I just can't do it. So much nothing.

What is with you guys and not liking movies? Man. I have such a short attention span that I have a hard time reading a chapter of a book without stopping to make a sandwich or walk around, but movies suck me right in most of the time. Even bad movies give me a lot of pleasure sometimes. I guess you can't fix "doesn't like movies."

yeah, that scene is 50 seconds long with 10 seconds where intense things happen. The movie is 96 minutes long, is every scene like that? Probably, right?

I am totally open to the idea that this is a case where I just can't appreciate a thing that is very good. These movies were a huge influence on lots of things I like, and all of my friends adore them. Maybe if I were more of a visual person, or learned to be, I could enjoy them more.

I have a similar thing with music. A lot of my favorite artists do really really long pieces where it takes a long time for things to happen. When I have the patience for them they blow my mind. But most of the time I am not in the mood.

Oh, don't mind me, I just take any chance I have to show this scene to people.

Nope, you can't.

I'm the opposite of you. I can read a book straight through more easily than I can sit through a movies for more than 15 minutes. I think it's partly because I'm a very fast reader. Things take so long to happen in movies that I could read a lot faster - that's also why I have no patience for videos on the internet, they take so long for an amount of content I could read five times faster. Also reading gives you control over the pacing - you can skip the boring parts and linger/repeat the good ones. Whereas in a movie you're at the mercy of how long the director thought something should take.

I'm watching a Japanese TV show online right now with 15 minute episodes. For me, this is the perfect length.

I think I maybe just like the good the bad the ugly cause of the incredible music, to be fair?  Also, I don't really the other two movies in that "series" or Once Upon a Time in the West.  I feel like I also have a really short attention span, but maybe most movies just bore me.  Like, I can watch 6 episodes of the Simpsons in a row or listen to multiple albums, but put my in front of any stupid comedy movie and I have lost attention in like 20 seconds.  My dislike of movies maybe is based on what my friends were into in high school.  So many stupid ass comedies I couldn't get through and like one or two of those "important" Hollywood films a year.  Those "important" films are the ones that bug me the most...the last one I saw was Argo.  Ugh, don't get me started on that.

Have you seen those Kurosawa films?  I think Sanjuro is the one I like more.

Oh, also, I needed but didn't have glasses from like 15-24, and now I have had glasses for a few years.  All of the movies except the Big Lebowski that I like are from the post glasses me.  I also used to dislike any visual art (i mean like shit on canvases/that you would see at an art museum.) but I think I am coming around on that too.  Being able to see is very important for appreciating things you look at!

Oh, also, I am in to all of those really put together, layered TV comedies (I basically think of it as just Seinfeld and its followers- Office uk and us, Arrested Development, Parks and Rec, Community...that might be it?).  I just don't think it is possible to do something like that with films.  I think that has basically ruined movie comedies for me.

You should check out Party Down. 20 episodes then cancelled, yet the ending is one of the most satisfying of any series I've seen.

"Her" was great. I really really liked it. Visually beautiful, great dorky future clothes, Joaquin Phoenix is amazing... I really enjoyed it.

i need to see that one. it's next on my list. last week i convinced the missus to see "American Hustle" and we loved loved it. she wanted to see "The Wolf of Wall Street" but acquiesced; later, she found out "Wolf" is three hours long and said 'oh shit, we'll watch that at home with the pause button.'

"Hustle" is great and both Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were amazing. Bradley Cooper was also really good, and Christian Bale was as good as he usually is. really, everything about the movie is really really good, it's just left turn after left turn and surprising from start to finish. er, well, i mean, there are some standard tropes without which the story wouldn't make sense, but there are so many fun twists and good laughs that the tropes just fit right.

I recently watched "Prisoners" with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, something I would not have done based solely on the trailer and the poster, which reek of generic thriller glop (but someone whose opinions I respect recommended it, so...). I was pleasantly surprised with it -- at least with the first 60%: after this mark it devolves into familiar generic thriller glop which is a tad tiresome. It starts heavy on Christian symbols and themes in a way that promises Big Questions Asked Tastefully, but after the hellicious setup they just give up on that and focus more on the procedural aspect. For some reason I can't buy Hugh Jackman trying to be serious, but Jake Gyllenhaal's character is interesting.

Another one I saw was the Danish movie "The Hunt". It's about a kindergarten teacher accused of molesting a little girl on a secluded little town somewhere in the Denmark wilderness (I'm not spoiling it when I tell you he's 100% innocent, the movie doesn't make a plot point out of it). Great movie even if the protagonist sometimes seems too oblivious to what's happening around him (dude is accused of a heinous crime and his biggest concern is how will that affect his chances of keeping custody of his son. He's the Hannibal Lacter dude from the Hannibal TV series, btw). There's a Christian theme running through it too, with an innocent being accused, the whole forgiveness thing, "don't judge lest ye be judged" etc., which is cool... I just wish they had made the protagonist less of a play-doh doll. Also, the little girl that accuses him -- fierce little actress, she's just amazing. It's not common for a movie to show the psychology of a child with such insight and truth, and the girl delivers.

Both good suggestions. Seems there are a lot of quality movies coming out these days.
