In the small town where I lived in PA apparently all short vowels are interchangeable. The pin/pen thing came up all the time, as did sket and skitch.

all street names here are mispronounced in funny ways. And not always in an intuitive "Americans trying to pronounce French" way.

Have I told you guys the story about how my dad didn't realize his Boston accent was abrasive and weird to non-Bostoners/ that he even had "an accent" until he was in his mid twenties?

Some LA surfer bum laughed his ass off when he said "hi, can I get a lahge fry?"
The Boston accent is hard to transcribe. Think less JFK, more Clip and Clap.

Couch Street is pronounced that way because the guy it's named after's name is pronounced that way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_H._Couch

It's named after the Naito family, they pronounce it NIGH-to, everyone else pronounces it NAY-to.

I had a door to door sales person correct me.   Fuck you door to door sales person.

My STL native coworker corrected me, that "Juniata" is pronounced "Juanita."

I couldn't decide whether he is right, because people in STL are dumb, or he is wrong, because he is mixing up the letters in his head.

I can never remember whether Lindell is "lin-DELL" or "lin-DULL."

Chouteau is show-tow. Gravois is Gra (like the sound in Gravel)-voice
Laclede is La-cleede.

Also, the area where Germans lived is called Dutchtown. Because, you know, Deutch.

(the area where the Irish lived is called Dogtown, so it could be worse.)

Also, in Saint Louis they call Mississippi water with a dead raccoon soaking in it "beer," and sell it to the rest of the country.
