I've been working on relaxing my jaw when I sleep, which has worked to the extreme that now sometimes I wake up with my mouth hanging open. I need to find a happy medium because now I am worried about, like, spiders crawling in my mouth or something.

How do you do that? Is it just talking yourself into a relaxed state?

My dentist is supposed to be making me a mouthguard to help with the grinding.

Have you tried minimising your exposure to things that fill you with seething rage?

Well, you can deliberately relax your jaw like any other muscle, and I think the trick is that I am not a very sound sleeper so I get many times a night to wake up, realize my jaw is clenched, and relax it. After a while it just seems to be replacing one habit with another.

Of course also like Doc suggests, I guess you'd have to not be lying awake having thoughts that fill you with rage.

For me it's not rage, but anxiety that is filling me. I've got a lot of personal problems right now.

Yeah, anxiety is more my problem as well. I removed myself from the situations that filled me with both rage and anxiety (ie, academia) so I guess that's an improvement.

My dentist is supposed to be making me a mouthguard to help with the grinding.

When I first got mine I hated it. It hurt like hell putting it in for the first couple weeks until my gums toughened up. Now I feel weird if I somehow fall asleep without it. Though I do occasionally have a dream about eating Swedish giraffe or Jujube Fruits or something and being unable to get them off my teeth.

Life?

Ash gets exactly what I was thinking.

Second best might be a sensory deprivation tank but I suspect you'd find the passage of unused time.... irksome.

My hubby went for massage therapy for the first time yesterday, and the therapist had him fill out some paperwork before his appointment. One of the questions was "How do you deal with stress?" With about five lines of blank space for a response. His answer? "Relax."  What a guy.

I have recently realized "cheeseburger or new shoes" is a pretty awful answer to that question.

Yesterday I discovered that you should put the little pieces of (ginger?) on your sushi. Damn that is some good shit.

It is pickled ginger, Inev. You can buy whole jars of it, and it is good on many things, including cheeseburgers but not including shoes.

I lost my job several months ago, and decided not to get a new one right away in order to deal with anxiety/stress. It did not help. The only thing that helps, as far as I can tell, is success. Even minor successes relieve the stress. A good workout is the easiest, short term, guaranteed way to kill anxiety and stress for 24 to 48 hours, but completing a climb that would previously have been too hard for me and is now at my limit will stave it off for a couple weeks. Completing a small task around the house such as cleaning the unopened mail off of every goddamn surface and placing it indiscriminately in the recycle bin will de-stress me until the next time I carry 2 weeks worth of mail inside and fling it into the living room aimlessly. Fuck mail. I haven't done that since last year, because when I do do it I have to find all my tax stuff and probably do my taxes. That causes more anxiety than mail, expecially considering I have zero money. When I complete the taxes I will probably kill the anxiety for enough time to find myself a job. Gotta go into those interviews confident, with all my ducks in rows.

I was told that the ginger is meant to cleanse the pallate between the different tastes of sushi. Yahoo Answers bears this out. But you know what, fuck that shit, like you, I love the sushi with the ginger together. How can that not be the way it's supposed to be done?

Doomie that is kind of a brilliant analysis of why doing chores is sometimes really good for mental health.

As for the pickled ginger, you guys go ahead and enjoy your food how you want, but once in a while, just for me, remember to try the sushi by itself without the ginger at the same time? Especially if you get to go to a fancier place than usual?
