Yeah, these days I regularly shock myself by looking down and noticing I've been tootling happily along at 53 or so.  Between middle age and living in the country, I've lost my sense of urgency.

It must be the middle age because I live in the heart of the city. Whenever I see a cop my natural inclination is to slow down. Then I realize I'm only going 35 to begin with so I have to speed back up.

Yesterday I realized that if NYC is 30 miles from my new house, it is absolutely within striking distance for a mildly-in-shape cyclist. The ferry is part of that too. Downloading PDF maps of New Jersey bike lanes and pedestrian/bicycle trails and dreaming. Would definitely want to test out the route in a car first, i am not that adventurous.

Absolutely prepared to get there and realize this is a bad idea. "Midwestern jackass dies trying to bike in New Jersey" is not the headline I want.

Headline writers should work blue more often.

I have to admit I might be better off if my employer blocked Tumblr. I might spend more time working and less time looking at pug pictures.

Paul, elaborate please.

Having Tumblr blocked kind of sucks. My employer has blocked many--but not all--forms of audio and video. YouTube still works, as does MLB's video, but most other forms of Flash-based video don't, and Spotify is blocked (boooooooooo!). Oddly, the web site for the beach house rental agency we're using this year is blocked. Don't get that one.

Paul, elaborate please.

Did they consider the fact that the population is expanding at a way faster rate then they are building roads to keep up with the increase? OF COURSE the roads are still congested. In the 10 years it took them to add 2 lanes to the freeway 1 million more people moved into the city.

Yes, the people whose entire career is building and designin roads take population growth into account.

I have actually been curious about this for a while, I'll let you guys know what I find.

Yes, the people whose entire career is building and designin roads take population growth into account.

I think you'll find that the people who design roads and the people who approve them have different priorities. The urban planners will report that we need x number of roads and the the powers that be will say, we can only afford y number, or it's not politically feasible at this time.

And the "they" I referred to were the people who did this study.

Hah. I wrote a long post talking about this, and then said that my laptop bit the dust yesterday and I hate using the Internet on my phone, and to prove my point it didn't post what I wrote and now it is all gone. Damn.

Long story short, I am almost certain that those economists took pop growth into account. Thinking it through, it also occurred to me that if the model is true, you would expect the old roads to have stayed at the same level of congestion for years despite population growth, because that level was the equilibrium point beyond which people would avoid driving.

Damn you guys are making me want to take transpo planning courses.

Pretty convenient that my "hard drive failed" right when you are about to come out with an OS that my computer can't upgrade to, huh Steve Jobs? "Yeah, the same day I upgraded to the next-newest operating system my hard drive coincidentally died."

I have the depressing feeling that Paul has just described how the whole world works: Smart well-informed experts say X, and the people who can make X happen never listen.

Anyway, to sum up my position, we need more roads or less people. I'm all for less people.

That's easy to say in shrinking St. Louis where there is plenty of elbow room. You're moving to crowded Boston. You'll be hating people soon enough.
