It seems to be a thing among some of the younger Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese folks at my workplace.  Mostly designer frames with non-prescription lenses (occasionally explained as being for lab safety), but one guy doesn't even bother with lenses at all.  Also, skinny jeans and shaggy hair.

Glasses with no lenses still provide some protection, to a narrow band of skin around the eyes. It's better than nothing.
