Back at the end of April I went to a Sunday Nats-Twins game. We left after the 12th inning. The Nats won in 16.

Yesterday I went to the Nats-Pirates game. We left after the 11th inning. The Nats lost in 18.

True. I used to be one of those "I NEVER leave the game early!" guys, but between kids, aging parents, and getting old myself, I have my limits now.

The Astros are doing well this season. I can't afford to go see them, but I wish I could next week when they are giving away Evan Gattis Gnomes. GNOMES!

GNOMES!

Two years ago the Nats gave away a Jayson Werth gnome, which came into being in no small part because some goofy fan on Twitter photoshopped Werth's face onto a garden gnome. (Given his hair and beard it was a natural fit.) I don't know if that was the first gnome giveaway in MLB, but it was right up there. And it was THE hottest giveaway item I think I can ever remember.

So the Nats are in the midst of getting their ass handed to them by the Orioles--they lost two in Baltimore, and then last night in DC they were down 10-3 going into the bottom of the 9th, scored five runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate but lost 10-8. Nonetheless, they are up 7 games on those giraffey bastard, 10 games on the Mets who everyone thought was going to win the division this year, and according to the people who calculate such things they have a 98% chance to win the division. Granted, the pitching has carried us all year, but has been kind of shitty lately, which is disconcerting, and Strasburg went on the DL with what we all hope is a minor thing that will let him come back in time for the playoffs but we don't know for sure.

Anyway. To listen to the Nats fans on Twitter talk about it, you'd think we're in the midst of an epic collapse. One guy is seriously like "I'd rather have the team lose 100 games than be inconsistent like this." Oh FFS. I sat through those 100-loss seasons and they sucked [Todd voice] BALLS. The team was a joke and everyone was miserable. No, they're not the Cubs or the late-90s Yankees, and yes the chances are reasonable that they'll lose in the first round of the playoffs. On the other hand, Strasburg could come back, and he Scherzer and Roark could all pitch lights-out in the playoffs and we win the whole fuckin' thing! There's a chance of that, and I like that much better than no chance. Dammit, people, enjoy this while you can.

I don't get our fans. They either don't understand baseball (it's a long-ass season and even the best teams have some down times), or they're so stuck in the football mentality that they act like every loss dooms the season. It's tiresome.

Your fantasy baseball semi-finals:

Banana Town (yours truly) vs. Owensboro (Greg)
Atlanta (Kevin?) vs. DTO 13 (Brian?)

As is increasingly the case, I don't know Kevin or Brian--are they board members, or friends thereof. Kevin even came in third in the baseball league last year. AFAIK this is Brian's first time in one of our leagues.

Hey AW, is Owenbsoro Greg on the Twitters by any chance?

Banana Town 8, DTO 2. Congrats to me for finally winning a TOUAMB fantasy sports league after finishing second and third a whole bunch of times. First time Brian (who I stiill don't know who that is) has competed in our league, to my knowledge, and definitely the first time he's placed.
Third place: Owensboro 10, Atlanta 0. Way to show up at the end, there, Atlanta. Owensboro Greg finishes in the top three in baseball for the fourth year running.

Great jorb everyone. On to the real baseball playoffs. If you don't have a rooting interest, I suggest the Washington Nationals. Think how happy your friend The Mayor will be if they win!

I've been mostly calm through the playoffs so far, but we've got less than six hours to go to the start of game 5 and I'm starting to freak out a little bit.

(At least, calm with regards to being nervous. When Jose Lobaton hit the home run in game 2, I yelled so loud and so long that I had to stop and catch my breath.)

I have a good friend in Toronto, so yeah that would be fun. Not sure I know any Indians fans. The Indians look like the weaker team (though they did just sweep the Red Sox, didn't they), so I'd prefer that matchup to some degree.

Of course even if they do win tonight, the Nats would have the daunting task of beating the Cubs before they'd get to the Series. I give them maybe a 25% chance of doing that, given the Cubs' overall awesomeness and the Nats' starting pitching woes. But you never know. Frankly, whoever knocks off the Cubs would be such a national villain that it kind of has to happen.

Wouldn't them winning take all the heat off?

Also, as a Red Sox fan my whole life, who took mushrooms the first time in the 2003 alcs (I had already tried Coke and weed, didn't realize eating mushrooms in a shit ass apartment and watching baseball might be a bad idea) and kinda never got over, hey, rooting for sports teams is the stupidest shit in the world (the strongest take away from that trip), uh, the Cubs don't want to win right?  It will be like post-2004 Red Sox but at least a little worse?

I am so hoping the Cubs shit the bed in a devastating way.

Not with you there, at least for now. I want them to beat the ever-living crap out of the Dodgers.

Cubs vs. Blue Jays would be the most US vs. Canada series ever, more so than '92/'93.
