Yeah, unfortunately I kind of imagine that's what happened.

By the way, I used to own a newspaper machine (I stole it in my misspent youth)

Why? What did you want a newspaper machine for?

I used to collect the Sunday Funnies section from the newspaper. I have a stack large enough to fill one of those machines. It's basically every Sunday funny section from the Houston papers (well, all of the Chronicle, and some from the Post) and a few random from other cities I might have visited. The collection stretches from '73 up until sometime in the '80s. I needed a place to store them.

Gimmee a trencher and a holiday and a motherfucker could go overboard, y'know?

Mind me asking what that project set you back?  A water line at the pool would be awfully handy.

I like to imagine that Paul had dreams of publishing and distributing his own damn newspaper, a better damn newspaper with no fuck*ng Marmaduke or The Lockhorns in it.

I know you're gonna find this difficult to believe, but once upon a time Marmaduke was an enjoyable comic strip. Maybe those were simpler times. And Lockhorns, I think they came later. Basically that collection contains the lions share of Calvin and Hobbles and The Far Side Sunday comics, those were my favorites. That and Peanuts of course, my all time favorite. Another possible shocker, Wizard of Id and B.C. were both very funny back in the day.

Short answer: $155

$75 for four hours with the trencher and $80 for 250' of pvc and couplings, tees, elbows, female adapters and two ball valves.

(I rented the trencher and bought the supplies at home depot)

It's an uncomplicated project as long as you DO NOT grind up by surprise something you really really need when trenching.

At this point, finding the time for that kind of project is harder than finding the money.  At least that kind of money.

You know I couldn't let this slide.

A "Provisional Wild Animal Keeper" at the Bronx Zoo starts at $37k.

This is above the median income in the census tracts that are the lightest color in this map (not the white ones, the lightest yellow that is most of the south Bronx-- the white means "insufficient data"), and about the same as the median income in the orangey ones to the east of the zoo/botanical gardens.

So it looks like they can live pretty close to work. The census publishes average rent numbers but they don't work on the handy dandy internet mapping tool. So I just went with median income. The median household income in Bronx County as a whole is $34,284.

So I finally got to do a little bit of a reality check on this. My friend said that she actually lived walking distance, on the other side of the Botanic Gardens, which is the opposite side of the zoo from the neighborhoods with housing projects. She said that most keepers though either lived in Queens and carpooled, or if they were more senior and had families, lived upstate, some of them very far away.

So they can theoretically live close, but most don't, presumably because what they can afford for the money has disadvantages that seem worse than the disadvantage of the long commute.

Went to Boston for a conference at Harvard. Boy, am I glad I don't go to Harvard. The building was very nice, though. The Museum of Fine arts was awesome, I got to get dinner with my sister, and I discovered my new favorite neighborhood (the North End).

My sister got offered an internship in NYC for the summer, but will not be paid enough to live anywhere. The internship is in lower NY state 3 days a week and midtown NYC the other 2 days.

Why is this legal, again?

I offered that she can stay in my place in NJ, but a 65 mile commute 3 days a week is pretty unreasonable.

Guys I am so ready to be done with school. Getting really aggravated at busy-work when I need to be looking for jobs and working on final projects.

School Sucks!

That's the thing! I am working on one paper that is super interesting and I wish I could devote more time to it. I'd also love to spend time learning about other urban planning topics. But instead I need to read 100 pages every week about foreclosures and mortgages, and write "response summaries" of what I learned, go to meetings where we talk about our silly group projects, etc. I'm also enjoying my internship, because there I do actual research and analysis work, and don't just read endless articles about the same things over and over.

Luckily I think one of my jobs is going to be done after next week. So for the last few weeks of school I at least won't have to worry about putting in time on that. Unfortunately, that also means no money coming in.

I have also had a cold with a nasty cough for over a week and that's making me grumpy. I am glad I came to school, just ready for it to be done so I can learn about whatever I want. And get paid to do a job, hopefully. Really I need to find a thing to spend less time on to apply to jobs instead, but having a hard time giving up sleep/eat/internet time.
