"Artists need to make money to eat and to continue to make art. Artists used to rely on middlemen to collect their money on their behalf, thereby rendering themselves innocent of cash-handling in the public eye. Artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks. Please welcome them. Please help them. Please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money.” -Amanda Palmer

That's too many people for me.

Actually I'm looking at it and parts of Houston are around 10k people per square mile. I would not have guessed. Although as an outsider I don't know anything about different parts of Houston. A lot of neighborhoods around US Hwy 59 are pretty dense. This is also the density of my old 'hood in St Louis.

Holy HELL, if you look at it on the neighborhood level, it looks like that part of New Brunswick where they sell iguana is more like 30k per square mile. Although... residential parts of NYC are 3 or 4 times that. There are even a few blocks with the equivalent of 220,000 people per square mile.
Density is such a weird thing.

Oh, I know. Houston used to be a city with lots of open spaces, but that's changing rapidly.

I finally got tomato and pepper plants put in this weekend. Lots of seeds to still in the ground and they are way overdue, but between terrible weather, too much other crap going on, and general laziness, it hasn't happened.

I put a serious fence around my little vegetable patch this year. Hoping that we will get the Japanese peppers instead of the rabbits.

Nope, I'm trying to teach the pug NOT to chase things. Before she chases something into the street and commits suicide.

My little sister moved into her first apartment this week. She asked me if I know fun, free things to do in NYC that aren't museums and don't involve walking a lot. I told her she picked the wrong city to move to.

I know I told you guys a year ago about my roommate who threw a fit because we didn't put the tea kettle away after we used it. That guy is long gone. There was another woman for a year, now we have a subletter, also from Cleveland where the Tea Kettle Boy was from... and she also puts away the kettle after using it. Coincidence?

Who knows. Maybe years of rooting for the Browns have changed them as a people.

I do kind of want an electric kettle. But trying to downsize possessions at the moment.

That roommate also puts away dishes from the dishrack at 7am if I leave things in it overnight. I think this roommate situation has helped me take a tiny step towards realizing that other people's neuroses are not my problem.

Today I got back my resume from my aunt who works in HR, and I am reminded why I hate talking to people about how to fix my resume.

I really don't get how resumes work. Half of the things I have read say "whoever is hiring you is not going to look at your resume for more than 30 seconds," which seems true to me, but then people tell me to put all this bullshit on it like clubs and "skills" like communicating or teamwork or my hobbies. If I had 30 seconds to convince someone to hire me I would not tell them about being a member of the glee club or that my customers in St Louis said I made the best lattes.

I am sure I have said these exact things to you guys before.

(I was not in the glee club, I was not in any clubs in college except for the radio station)

I'm sure academia is different, but when I was on the hiring side, I did not want to see that. And I told my students definitely NOT to include clubs and hobbies. Because if you take time away from your work for clubs and hobbies, better not to let them know.

I would only be interested in clubs and hobbies if I was specifically looking for new college hires. If we need expressly entry-level people, and I'm not expecting them to have anything relevant in terms of work experience or advanced degrees, then if I want to differentiate potential high performers from boring people, then yeah I'd look at that stuff.

But if you have a graduate degree that is directly relevant to the position, IMO that is worth far more than being music director at the campus radio station or vice president of your fraternity and what not.
