You've probably never heard of her before, neither had I. That's because she only joined on March 23 of this year and has "0" posts. But she did go to the trouble of completely filling out her profile and for that she should be rewarded with a severe TOUAMB n00b hazing. She has a myspace account which, if you visit, will quickly discover she is a big fan of the Beatles and Ben Folds. She's from Austrailia so it's already late in the day for her so let's give her the Birthday thread she deserves.

You go Gerl. You ride the lightning dammit.
ALSO: Why hasn't Myspace been kicked off the internet for being the most impossible to use and poorly designed website in history? And for allowing people to use anchored background images that have simillar colors to the text on the page?? Yes I'm looking at you
-
Let's pick on people who've registered and never posted. How about Morpheme Girl, who has an interesting name and a blog complaining about being a teacher? If you have time to have a blog or a Myspace page (ugh), you have time to post, you Lazy McLurker#####es.
-
AppleGerls myspace page gave me a headache. It is very busy.

Seriously. MySpace users should NOT have the ability to make anything come out of my speakers. They're not old enough to be trusted with that responsibility, and manage to screw it up and every chance they get.
Also, I don't understand the following: Johnny Shaggyhead, spending 5 or 6 hours crafting every kind of seizure inducing banality onto his profile page finds that it's twice as wide as his browser window. This doesn't bother him at all.

WOWWW
Heyy... people from the achewood boards
Way to get a good welcome!
Thanks for the birthday wishes, and uh.. noob hazing.. am pretty chuffed!
I haven't posted yet 'cause i thought i'd be labelled a GOF noob for sure. I was reading achewood a fair while before then.
So, yeah! i shall post now. I'm sorry my myspace gives you a headache Alohadawg. You might have been reading it before i changed the font to an easier-to-read yellow. If not... i am still sorry.
I RIDE THE LIGHTNING!

Happy birthday! And welcome. I reckon trying to avoid the whole 'GOF n00b' label is ultimately futile. Anyone registering around the fertile member-producing period of the G.O.F will eventually be exposed as the bandwagon jumpers that they are, either through investigation or admittance on their very first post.
And before anyone points this out, I did use the words 'fertile', 'member', 'producing' and 'period' one after the other as a result of my inelegant prose. I did not want to point this out, but on this board I feel I have to do this. I'm looking at you.

Hey, Q was going to say something sooner or later. I thought I'd mix it up (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2669.msg60209.html#msg60209) a bit.
-
I'm looking at you.
*cough*
Er yes.. happy birthday Apple "Misspelled Young Female Human". I certainly hope it is a good one.
Ninja edit: Damn you Hobot, you win this time.
-
Happy Birthday, n00b. I hope you got some lovin' there down under.
Ifyouknowwhatimean.

Austraila, man. Man... the internet goes that far? That is crazy. The internet: What won't it do?
Oh, happy belated birthday!

My fertile member has assisted in the producing of two tiny humans in a 17 month period.
-
i am again most grateful for the good wishes your humble personage(s) have sent!
As a fertile member i shall try to produce a good reputation of myself as not simply a GOF bandwagon jumper. This may take quite an extensive period of time. But i am a fertile member! and fertility shall prevail!
Er.. yeah!

Gerl is not mispelt.
gerl is a cool girl.
and this girl reads achewood, and annoyed the FUCK out of everyone with her Trail of Dead myspace music.
thus she is cool.
Thus she is a gerl.

Oh its been the new cool for some time now. The Gooseman should know.
p.s. mixtape or DIE.
-
if annoying is the new cool, call me fonzy...
oi... thats lame...
hell of lame...
i wasn't even the one with the obnoxious myspace!
anyways...
-
Look, the n00bs are having a lovers spat, isn't that cute...
It's Fonzie (http://www.t-shirt-town.com/ProductImages/retro-t-shirts/what-would-fonzie-do-t-shirt.jpg) fool, get if right. Oh wait, did you mean to say "if annoying is the new cool call me Fozzy (http://www.webundies.com/images/ka004ar.jpg)? Yeah, that sounds about right.
~Paul
-
Well, if Fonzie's prime-time friendly faux-dago sexuality is cool, then... well, maybe I should change my lifestyle.
-
Post count 3 is calling post count 4 a n00b. You gotta love it.
Face it, kids, not a one of you are cool. You're posting on an internet message board (that alone would kill your chances) about alive stuffed animals and cartoon cats, and are arguing over whether a song played in a MySpace (uncool) profile is cool or not.
There's a whole lotta uncool going on right around here.

Dammit people there's still a tiny amount of cool slipping through. We need a reference to "natural 20," some TMBG lyrics,American Idol predictions, and discussions on overclocking and who could or could not defeat Superman stat.

I think this thread (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2679.msg60591.html#msg60591) eliminated any remaining cool points we may have inadvertently accumulated.
-
I'm glad that that link took me straight to my post
because I was kind of wondering if that was a waste of time. and now I know: I got to lower the coolness level of the whole board!
I'm almost as cool as.. I don't know... Connor MacLeod, or Julian Bashir, or something.

I'll take care of that for you...

Your post was only the most salient example of an entire thread of shame; we have all, in our own, unique way, contributed to the collective loss of coolness.
Plus, that post was hilarious; if you had never written it, everyone on the board would be aware that their life was missing something, without knowing precisely what it was. That something, theinevitable, was My Little Pony/Justice League slash.
-
You get a can from me, becaue I forgot to give you one earlier for your excellent slash template.
-
I'm pretty sure that John Flansburgh could beat up Superman.
C'mon, you know it's true. He's an epic-level bard!
-
I totally agree. Have you seen the size of that man's guitar forearms? He could crush superman's trachea while rocking without a second thought.
-
Flans nothing. Linnell forever... bitches!
I mean seriously, compare Monopuff to State Songs and figure out which one is more listenable?
(Hint: Linnell forever.)
I know this post has no Superman content, that's because Superman is a punkass.
-
Linnell is obviously the superior John. There is no discussion here. The question here is #1 Dan. I propose a single-elimination tourney.
-
Dan Hickey...
Though my favorite drummer will always be Brian, for two reasons.
1: He was the drummer the first time that I saw them live.
2: I believe Flans said something like, "Watch Brian, he will smile and look at each and every one of you by the time the night is through." And he did... oh how he did. He was like some strange #####ic drumming/smiling leer machine.
-
Dan Hickey...
You only like Hickey because of the drum solo interlude during She's Actual Size. I think Dan Miller is probably the best. Oh, and I really miss the Velcro Horns. I think they may have also been named Dan.
To hear this drum solo in spanish, press or say 2

The only TMBG album I have is Flood which I just elimated from my i-pod because it's annoying music. Do I not like this band or is this just a bad album? It seems like something I would like, but I really couldn't seem to get into it. Am I wrong?
~Paul
-
Flood is actually my least favorite album.
Lincoln or Apollo 18 are recommended from my end. I'd give em a spin and if you don't like them then it's definitely not the band for you.
-

Flood is by far the most popular album and is often the way new fans are introduced. In fact, there's a TMBG cover band called Spiraling Shape* that only plays the album Flood in order. It might not be their best album but I'd say it's the most accessible. If you don't like a single song I don't really see much point in trying out their other material. If you really want to give the old college try through I guess I'd 2nd Q's nomination of Apollo 18.
*Said cover band is made up entirely of TMBG using fake names.
-
Linnell is the tortured genius of the band, sure, but Flansy's on top just for pure rockingness. If he and Kim Deal would be to reproduce, they would create the Rock & Roll Messiah.
Hickey's pretty awesome (Press or yell 5 for Keith Moon! Press or yell 6 for Animal!), but I do like the guitarist (which one is that again?). The other Dan kinda stays under my radar.
And I just got Direct from Brooklyn on DVD in the mail yesterday! It was my birthday present from my darling husband! He has it on VHS, but we don't have a tv or a vcr anymore, so we couldn't watch it. I'm pretty sure I could watch the Ana Ng video over and over again for the rest of eternity.
-
mq: this finally proves that we are in some way related.
Because I read that, and said to myself "what? no fuckin' way! linnell wins".
except, actually, I was just going to say it because he plays the accordian. I don't actually know which songs he wrote.
-

The songs he wrote are the ones you like.
I say this with all certainty because that is not something they would've changed in v2 of me.
Ana Ng, Don't Let's Start, The Statue Got Me High, Mammal, &c
I can't wait to die and post something like... "tell theinevitable... to... carry on... my.. legacy *gasp*" And yes, I will type the extra ellipses and the gasp because it's the Internet and even in death some rules have to be followed.

This reminded me of one of my favorite TMBG anecdotes. I was seeing them at the 9:30 Club and something happened with the sound so the bass cut out. While it was being fixed the Johns decided to play one of the old songs just the two of them. So they announce Saphire Bullets play like one note, then stop and confer. Then Flansburg announces, "John just asked me which one of us sings this." Then they played (Linnell sang).
That also reminded me that I fucked up above. The TMBG cover band made up of the actual TMBG is called Saphire Bullets, not Spiraling Shape. Why would a band that only plays Flood name themselves after a non-Flood song? What the hell was I thinking?

King Arthur: Look, if he was dying, he wouldn't have bothered to carve 'Aaaauuuggghhhh'. He'd just say it.
Sir Galahad: Maybe he was dictating it.

We have reached the Point of No Return. It's all downhill from here, people.
We'd been dancing around the threshold of uncool for so long that I decided we needed to shit or get off the pot. I couldn't think of anything better to bury the needle in the Uncoolometer than TMBG and Python in the same post.

Ekki Ekki F'tang Zoot Boing <mumble mumble>
Er yes.. anyway back when I was a big fan and whatnot (Approximately ages 13 - 20-ish) before my tastes hopped elsewhere I went to show after show of theirs. I followed them across the state once and I swore with the indignation that only a person on the lower end of the teen years has that Linnell remembered me from the first 3 shows the 3 previous nights (Where I stood up front by him as well). When I did finally meet them outside a Streetside Records at some free show they did a couple years later I just said, "Thanks.. I mean that." I couldn't think of anything else more honest to say at the time.
Okay so it wasn't a funny anecdote from a show, but hey, they are not all worthy of being stored at Fort Knox.
-
man.
so, you are right. he did write the songs I like.
Paul: I would suggest "Dial-a-song". It's basically a compilation of all of the songs that I like. I still remember buying it, and bringing it home and listening to it.
I don't know. i get all emotional when I listen to TMBG now, because back when I was first learning guitar (and actually, back to about... 6th grade?) my best friend was this kid who was obsessed with TMBG. We used to be in a band, but we only had two original songs-- both of them had like two chords. This was a problem, because while I like punk rock, and two chords seemed enough for me, he wanted to be... Phish? Every other song we did was a Phish cover. We once played in a barn in January. In fact, that was the only time we ever played that wasn't at the school talent show.
We tried to play Blitzkrieg Bop, and failed. twice. I was the only person who knew the words, and I kept screwing up the guitar part. This is when you know your band is lacking some skills.
He ended up being a jerk, trying to get my girlfriend to dump me and date him, etc. Actually, I liked him a lot more when he was into TMBG. Once he started liking "serious" music, he became much more of an asshole. He's the kind of guy who gets all excited about how good the copy of "Nirvana: Unplugged in New York" that I gave him for christmas was, but still tells everyone that he thinks Kurt Cobain was an untalented and worthless guitarist/songsmith. Because, of course, the most important thing about writing songs is an extensive knowledge of musical theory, coupled with unneccesary use of technical skill. I don't like people who think like this.
yeah, still bitter. Sorry.
Um, Happy Birthday, Apple Gerl! I can understand the need to make your myspace more elaborate, although I have not.
-
Cobain was an outstanding songwriter.
tells everyone that he thinks Kurt Cobain was an untalented and worthless guitarist/songsmith. Because, of course, the most important thing about writing songs is an extensive knowledge of musical theory, coupled with unneccesary use of technical skill
This is a symptom of players who get too involved in becoming a "guitar player" and not interested enough in becoming a decent musician.
The same applies to most other instruments, but the problem runs rampant with the guitar.
-
Dragging this vaguely back on topic.... I have now had occasion to look at a number of Myspace pages. Apparently Myspace is a site that allows younguns who don't know how to make websites to make incredibly ugly and annoying websites. Instead of having to wait until they have gained some maturity and aesthetic judgment and income to pay for hosting space and so on.
I fear for the future of civilization. Or am I just an old curmudgeon?
-
oh goodness
the worst are the people who actually -do- know how to design websites, and use this skill to do wierd things.
"so... I can't add this person as a friend. They have hidden the button. I also cannot view their list of friends. Hm. I guess this person likes their privacy?"
-
I only use my MySpace page (http://myspace.com/wordfront) as a means of connecting with the t-shirt buying youth. I have run into some old friends on there, though, and made a few new ones, so that's nice.
Also, there are a lot of hot girls on myspace. Bonus!

Belatedly:
Y'all are Philistines. Especially Q. Mono Puff rocks my face.
Seriously, go listen to Unsupervised and tell me again that they suck.
Futhermore, the wisdom of "Mr. Xcitement" echoes my sentiments: "like Flansy with the soda can, it's trooky trooky trooky."
Paul -- the thing about TMBG is that each of their albums more or less sounds like a different band. Have you tried Apollo 18, Lincoln, or John Henry? You might like those better.
-
Belatedly:
Y'all are Philistines. Especially Q. Mono Puff rocks my face.

I never said Monopuff "sucks".
I just said compare them to State Songs and see which one you want to listen to more often.
If you say Monopuff then I will stab you in the jaw. Seriously, if anyone says Monopuff then come on out to St. Louis this coming weekend and find me, I'll be the guy outside stabbing jaws.
-
We were talking about coming to STL next weekend, but I have no fuck*ng idea who Monopuff is. Does that mean I will get stabbed or I won't?

While I will happily listen to any of the three albums in this comparison more or less indefinitely, I'm sorry, I'll take It's Fun to Steal over State Songs.
Feel free to stab me at your leisure.

Way to go V... now everyone is getting stabbed... even AW and it's NOT HIS FAULT!

Everyone is getting stabbed and it's all Apple Gerl's fault. Way to go gerl...

...I'm sorry, I'll take It's Fun to Steal over State Songs.
Feel free to stab me at your leisure.
I'm right there with ya, V. It's Fun to Steal rules. I've only listened to State Songs once or twice, and it never really got me. But Dashiki Lover et al. runs through my head frequently, like a 60 cycle hum in the background.
I guess I'm second up agains the wall when the Q revolution comes.
-
The Q Revolution: Stabbing Jaws since '06
It's a good thing Monopuff hasn't done a concert around here, because that's a lot of jaws to stab and my stabbin' arm is a bit out of practice...
-
We were talking about coming to STL next weekend, but I have no fuck*ng idea who Monopuff is. Does that mean I will get stabbed or I won't?
Monopuff was a side-project of one of the Johns from TMBG. Flansburgh, the one with glasses who plays guitar, if you care.

Were we? I didn't even know that we were doing that. The song that is played in my myspace was cool anyway. Like if you even know what it is, geez.
On the other uncool hand, I do love TMBG. Unfortunately, not only because i am, A Noob, i don't have any sweet little anecdotes to share with anyone, nor can i recommend an album i don't have. But thats what you're here for!
Now i'm off to post on some other thread and go out and buy Dial-A-Song. Seeya bitches! (unnoobs??)
-
John Henry is their best album, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a damn dirty liar.
Also excellent: Flood. Apollo 18.
DID YOU KNOW THAT THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS WERE ONCE THE MUSICAL AMBASSADORS FOR INTERNATIONAL SPACE YEAR?
-
John Henry? What are you on? Some sort of drug that makes you all crazy... like a crazy drug? Maybe you have tourettes and you spout off random albums; I cannot say.
Everyone knows it's Lincoln, THEN Apollo 18. EVERYONE.
Even babies and spiders.
-
Even babies and spiders.
Even spider babies?
(A can for anyone who gets this reference!)
-
Even spider babies?
(A can for anyone who gets this reference!)
Spider Babies know it all the more; they know it deep in their cold black souls, they just do not care because Spider Babies are machines that basically run on pure hatred; pure hatred and coffee.
(I am sorry I did not get that reference; I attempted to make up for it by saying something questionably humorous. I am sorry about this.)
-
I agree with John Henry first. For second place, I'm gonna be a little more unorthodox and put it as a tie between Factory Showroom and Mink Car. Followed by the pink album. After that, they're all sorta tied.
I think I sorta ODed on apollo 18 and flood when I was 14. I just can't really listen to 'em all the way through anymore.
-
Every TMBG comment except from Cort in this thread are from insane people.1
Insane people taking their crazy drugs; all talkin' crazy.
*fingers knife* BACKOFF! *runs out of the room*
1Also mine, mine are clearly from someone sane.
-
I'll also go with Factory Showroom, mainly because New York City is the greatest unapologetic love song in the history of the world.
-
I like Factory Showroom as well. I always thought that I was in the minority on this. Till My Head Falls Off is great fun and New York City definitely one of their best covers.
Mink Car I think I burned out on because it was during their TMBG Unlimited days. So they released various demos and mixes of each song several times over for a year before the album was even released. Then proceded to leave my favorite song, Your Mom's Alright (feat. Mike Doughty), off of the US release. For a while you could DL it free at theymightbegiants.com. But still, not on the album = boo to that.
-
I like Factory Showroom as well. I always thought that I was in the minority on this. Till My Head Falls Off is great fun and New York City definitely one of their best covers.
I keep forgetting that New York City is a cover. I read that in an interview a while back, but it can never stick in my head. I'd love to hear the original version sometime. I need to check iTunes when I get home...
-
I think I sorta ODed on apollo 18 and flood when I was 14. I just can't really listen to 'em all the way through anymore.
I had a weird intersection in my life where between everyone who lived in the house, Flood was the only thing we musically had in common, so we ended up listening to it over and over. It got to the point where I'd want to bust someone's eye like a grape to not hear that album. That's sad, as it is certainly their most accessible album.
I'm going to have to stick with Lincoln as their best, but certainly their morphology is such that you'd have to look at them as two different bands.
Band 1:
Self-Titled, Lincoln, Flood, Apollo 18 (No! Kind of Fits better here)
Band 2:
John Henry, Factory Showroom, Mink Car, Spine
I have not heard "Here Come the A B Cs."
I'd have to go with Lincoln, from the Old School, and Factory from the New School. "New York City" still makes me so happy that I'll cry.
***Edit*** So I came back later, and I'm looking at this now thinking... man I love me some John Henry.
-
I really hate to rank the TMBG albums, because they're sort of like pizza: even the "worst" ones are still pretty good. I'm less of a fan of Factory Showroom and the Pink Album than I am of John Henry, Flood, Apollo 18, Lincoln, and Mink Car. Oh, and The Spine. The Spine is good too. And No! is all right...
... yeeargh. This may be the most wishy-washy comment in the history of TOUAMB.
-
So I'm the only one who hated Factory Showroom so much that he only listened to it once?
That's the one with that S-E-X-X-Y thing on it, right?
Yeah, that one was pretty much crap.
-

Yes.
Yes.
No. James K. Polk is a great song even without the confetti canon.
