The correct subject line is, of course, "While you were takin' your time climbin' the rope ladder to the heela-copter" but it doesn't all fit with the date and such.
I like how you have to scream at Airwolf to get it to do stuff. Airwolf is such a bitch.
-
I dunno. I'd'a gone with ...and "B", you need to calm down.
But I would'a also configured the date all Amurriken and such.
-
Dude, "A", the airwolf cockpit has one-way glass.
I mean... That's about it right there.
Also I am soooo psyched about the new Airwolf centric attitude achewood is adopting. This can only be a Good Thing.
-
No, I think you picked the only option.
No one cares about Philippe? Is there anyway he can live through this? Maybe Dale Jr. power?
-
These last three strips are great and redeem the rest of this dumb arc.
-
The thread title should be FSSSSSSSSSSH
-
Man, for like the past year I've been wishin' that I was born 60 years earlier, so I could have been one of them WWII fighter pilots. All flyin' round, firin' missiles. Wearin' a headset.
Did they have headsets then? Hmm. I guess we'll never know...
-
I think my favorite thing here is that so far everyone is way more interested in the dialouge stylings than the fact that Ray just shot a missile at Phillipe.
Airwolf totally redeemed this arc.
Airwolf is life. With a minifridge of beer.
-

Headsets they had. But in WWII there were hardly any missiles to speak of. It was all machine guns, bombs and torpedoes for the most part.
-
I had this thread title in mind until we got to the last two panels, but as with most things AD has already shown us the light.
Even though this outcome was totally obvious from the targetting frame I laughed out loud, it needed to be done in two panels too, the chck then the fsssssssssSSSHHHHH. Like a drunk slowly but inevitably placing his drink on the counter and leaning back for a chair that is no longer there.
-
No, I think you picked the only option.

ah, he won't die. Either the missle will fizz out on its own or Ray will destroy the missle with THE. BIGGEST. LASER.
-
ah, he won't die. Either the missle will fizz out on its own or Ray will destroy the missle with THE. BIGGEST. LASER.
How could I forget about THE. BIGGEST. LASER. I am such a fool.
Hopefully the Keith Moon head will be okay.
-
Great! I had hoped for random fiery death, and so far so good. Maybe tomorrow the strip will be funny as a bonus.
Alternate thread title: "Everyone I know says "hella-copter."
-
Hella-copter (http://www.hellacopters.com/) is the way to go!
-
Great! I had hoped for random fiery death, and so far so good. Maybe tomorrow the strip will be funny as a bonus.

Dude, this is a pretty funny strip:
Drinking and driving an Airwolf
The hella-copter heela-copter delima
Airwolf find... An Otter
The target screen/ shitty interface
and, two frames for an awesome missle take off.
-

man, i don't want to bring you down, but like. that was a crappy time. you know? hitler, atom bombs, the ENTIRE WORLD AT WAR, japanese internment, tom hanks all constantly looking for private ryan.
oh, and then when it was over, like, the 50s: segregation, korea, mccarthy, pat boone, the dawn of instant food, having to live through the endless pathetic hell that was your kids in the 60s, all of that.
oh, and then you vote for reagan. because you're old and scared and he seems, you know. just like you.
besides, they have way cooler headsets now. an excellent example of how far headsets have come can be located by typing "airwolf" into youtube. i'm talking automatic black visor lowering, here. that is the Stuff.
have i been up all night studying for finals? i have. forgive me for being ornery.
-
Usually I'd be going to bed about now, or maybe a little before now, but since this is New Schedule time I just got up about a half an hour ago, attended to some affairs, and read Achewood while my email was downloading.
This strip, and then nearly all of your responses felt much funnier to me at this time of day, in my current condition (in which I delight) than any of it ever does at 4AM when I had been up all day and kinda grumpy and worn down.
Viva los morning readings.
Also, as soon as I saw the "targeting" screen I figured it would try to shoot at Philippe, but then seeing those last two panels (especially the fffffffffssssssshhhhhhhhh sound effect, which is exactly what Airwolf missles should sound like) made me laugh out loud.
AND GOOD DAY TO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE. HOW ARE YOU ALL DOING TODAY.
-
good lord!
Phillipe!
I am terrified.
Ray better get his ass on that laser, or I am not being his friend any more.
I will give him such a slap!
Come here and get your slap, Ray!
I will slap him so hard that he will almost lose it.
-
Laughed out loud; it's mostly the idea of... you know? "Accidentaly shot missile"... that's always a winner. Am loving this last arc, I am.
-
Goddammit, I know 'Stad is just teasing me.. making me wish that missle was going to hit... hit all to hell.
But I know later the otter will be fine and all dancing with cake.
That fuck*ng dancing cake.
-
I think my favorite thing here is that so far everyone is way more interested in the dialouge stylings than the fact that Ray just shot a missile at Phillipe.
Well of course we must think of ANYTHING BUT THAT.
I'd have gone with "I feel like I'm tryin' to set the time on a cheap oven."
-
I love how today's strip insinuates that Ray hasn't really looked at the manual before Teodor came along.
"Let's see ... 'look for stuff', that'd be under 'L' in the back ... naw, shit, maybe 'find stuff'? COMPUTER, TELL ME HOW TO FIND STUFF. Damn, that didn't work. Oh, hold on, the computer here has Pong on it? Man, we could have some hella old school computer parties up here, all with Pong and drinking Jolt Cola and listenin' to Kraftwerk."
-
I actually predict that's some OTHER otter in a cooler floating just offshore.
-
it is the correct missile. It will have a grappleing hook at the end of it, etc.
also: this reminds me of a beautiful time. A time when I was in Switzerland, and the family I was staying with kept complaining about their German Oven, on which they could not figure out how to set the time.
while a teacher tried to translate the German instruction manual, I figured out that if I held down the button which said something like "Das Klock" (or whatever the Deutsche word for Clock is), I could type in the correct time. They were so impressed with this.
I'm going to get a Tattoo of phillipe dancing on a cake, just for Q.
-

I will give him such a slap!
Come here and get your slap, Ray!
I will slap him so hard that he will almost lose it.
So, what, you're just slapping anyone now?!
Ray's Angry Eyebrows are excellent in panel 10. But there is a slight problem with this strip: Philippe is not a member of the otter species. He is a member of the stuffed otter species.
-
Airwolf is sophisticated enough to make that distinction and know what Ray meant to ask for.
-
it is the correct missile. It will have a grappleing hook at the end of it, etc.
Dammit TI, you took my response. Airwolf's missles are like Green Arrows (http://www.bookofratings.com/arrows.html) arrows (http://www.bookofratings.com/arrows2.html).
-
FUUUUUCCCCKKK YEAAAAH!
Of course, we all know Ray's finger just 'slipped'. That sly old dog cat.
Tomorrow: Will Phillipe escape the cooler before the missile hits? Let's hope not!
-
Tomorrow: Chicken!
-
By "tomorrow," of course, you mean WE RETURN THURSDAY.
-
By "tomorrow," of course, you mean WE RETURN THURSDAY.
And Thursday's strip is about Pat and Nice Pete.
-
Oh sure, if you're talking about the comic.
I was just interjecting that I was thinking of buying an actual live chicken tomorrow. You know... cause chickens are kind of funny.
Probably the wrong section for that sort of musing though.
-
Tomorrow: Will Phillipe escape the cooler before the missile hits? Let's hope not!
-
I hadn't even given any thought to how phillipe would get out of this. The. Biggest. Laser. sounds like it will be a distinct possibility. Maybe Keith Moon's head will be used to focus the laser into an even more deadly, tiny beam.
Ray is like the MacGuyver of secret eBay.
-
And Thursday's strip is about Pat and Nice Pete.

Nah, hell no. After shooting down hell of planes, maybe a year or so POW, after the war I'd have only a couple years to go before fatal liver disease. I'm seeing huge gobs of opium in there, too.
I've got it all planned out, ain't nothin' you can say!
Aw, I'm just sayin' I wanna fly the copter, is all.

In another webcomic creator's hands. the mere presence of Airwolf would be the joke, in a "HEY GUYS REMEMBER THE 80's! POP CULTURE! HA HA!" way, an unfunny way unless you've been 'trained' to laugh like a barking seal at the mere sight of Mr. T, Trapper Keepers, Members Only Jackets, awkwardly shoehorned-in Miami Vice references, etc.
Here, Onstad makes it seemless. The absurdly wealthy cat has bought Airwolf, it's a joke but there's a bit more to it than that.
Plus, I think that even though this is Airwolf and eBay Plat. Exchange will let people by rock stars' body parts and enormous lasers, would they go so far as to equipping a gussied up tv helicopter with real missiles?
-
Come on baby! You know I save all my slaps for you!
there were not helicopters in WWII.
-

You shut your lying mouth! Airwolf was REAL. It always was.
-
there were not helicopters in WWII.
Apparently this was the best they could do back then:

Nice sig, by the way.
-
Yeah, this is true.
In "The Family Guy" or "American Dad"... are not only the only shows on television less funny than "Teachers" (including "24" for some reason) but also the basis of the "humour" in 99.95% of internet comic strips... Airwolf would show up because it reminds us that Airwolf occured and remembering things are supposed to make us laugh these days. For some reason.
But in "Achewood"... the purchase of Airwolf merely serves as a microcosm for Ray's outlandishness, his slavish devotion to his personal definition of "small times" and the fact that he is just so stupidly rich that buying just any hella-copter is so far from Ray's reality that it is functionally impossible.
Oh, I hate our Pax MacFarlane where a joke, now, is to simply point out... "hey! there's Mr. T and the Kool-Aid Man!" and the big show stopper of the night is "hey! there's Mr. T and the Kool-Aid Man! and they're making love!"
Screw you, television.
-
what the...
but...
those shows are both brilliant!
the other day, the joke was this:
peter crashes his car... into the house of the kool-aid-man.
he says somethjing like "wow that is so... shit! now I know why people hate me so much. Jesus, this pisses me off!"
I am not being facetious, I straight-up love these shows.
-
Family Guy, I think, is alright, in small doses. But American Dad is just criminal. I mean, why would they do that? It's the same damn show except instead of a dog there's an alien and a giraffe whose existences are never satisfactorily explained. And there's apparently "politics" though I can't see it through all that suck. I can't believe fox runs this show and cancels Futurama, Firefly and Arrested Development. Fuck Fox.
Sorry, I'm just, so upset about all this.
Jesus...

Word. American Dad straight up SUCKS.
-
I feel compelled to watch Family Guy because I liked the first seasons so much, but the new episodes just get worse and worse. I just watched the newest episode and I only laughed a single time.
American Dad is probably better right now, but that's not saying much. That show gets points for Patrick Stewart. "Weird stuff... butt stuff."
-
Family Guy and American Dad are both horrible. I think Southpark pretty much proved why.
Speaking of t.v., I am watching this show on the Animal Planet called The Secret Life of Otters. While watching it, it dawned on me that otters can swim (like a thing you know but overlook). So why did Philippe take the cooler? Is he too young to go swimming that far, or is he a real stuffed animal while Ray, etc. are real cats? I am kind of confused. It is a real otter based on a stuffed animal, right?
-
or is he a real stuffed animal while Ray, etc. are real cats? I am kind of confused. It is a real otter based on a stuffed animal, right?
They're CATS?
(The stoning commences.)
-
They're CATS?
(The stoning commences.)
Now I am more confused.
-
My theory would be that, as a river otter, he is really only prepared for rivers, not... large bodies of water of some time.
For a river otter to graduate up to large body of water otter, he'd need at-least training by Lou Ferigno.
Which, at five, would probably kill him faster than a missle.
-
My theory would be that, as a river otter, he is really only prepared for rivers, not... large bodies of water of some time.
Yea, I just got home from school and ran, then saw that on T.V. real quick while checking some things on the internet. I never thought of the specs of otter swimming. Damn.
-
Sigh.
Philippe is an alive stuffed animal. If I recall correctly he was purchased at the Monterey Bay Aquarium so I would presume he is a sea otter, not a river otter.
-
Guys, remember, we're talking about Philippe here. Philippe is five. He probably just didn't think to swim, especially since he's delirious and all.
Remember which comic we're reading: the one about the depressed dogs and the retarded otter.
-

Can Philippe swim? Onstad likes to ignore the early strips in terms of continuity but A Curious Therapy (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=10232001) seems to imply that he doesn't dig on water.
-
or maybe he can't swim all the way to China?
also: Come on people! His dad died! There was no one to teach him to swim!
-
Are those avatar 'staches new? I hope Keith's hell of 'stache played some part in this.
Edit: They are all over the place. WTF? Still, I just hope I had something to do with this.
-
it is a tribute to mustaches.
it started here, roughly, when mr Flip said that he would use one of the mustache pictures as his avatar. (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2468.156.html)

Well, I was still ahead of the trend. It was like in high-school, when I was wearing aviator sunglasses and trucker caps sophmore year and getting made fun of. Then, junior year that Kutcher show that I can't think of the name of right now came out and everybody at my high school was doing it. fuck*ng assholes.
-
It was like in high-school, when I was wearing aviator sunglasses and trucker caps sophmore year and getting made fun of.
Thankfully I have never seen anybody in either of these in real life (well in last 10 years anyway). Last month I saw my first popped collar and actually laughed at the guy. He either thought I was laughing at something else or used to the reaction.
-
oh my god, really? where you are, people don't pop the collar?
I guess it's a thing which would be more prevalent at southern prep schools.
have you seen the layered popped collars?
a friend of mine once layered 3 popped collars. people thought she had "finally gotten some fashion sense!" and complimented her, not realizing that she was making fun of them.
-
Even if I knew how to manipulate images on the internet, I would not know where to put facial hair on my icon to begin with. I have let my icon down and she is letting me know it.

Ever since I can remember I been poppin my collar.

Man, that is awesome. At the university I am at, in the borderline south area, popped collars and red sox hats are all the trend. I should try to pull that off one day.
I wonder if they will start making faux popped collars, like those turtleneck things. That would be rad.
-

I wanted to make a shirt that had like 5 popped collars, but I thought that was a bit too much work just for a joke.
I hope those aviator glasses are out by next summer. They make my slapping fingers so itchy.
-

You could totally put like a five o'clock shadow/ chin strap thing on around the outside circle.
-
I keep wanting to go up to people and be all like "Here, let me fix your collar for you".
What really sucks is when people wear layered polo shirts, but wear one so that it's not even on all the way, like their arm is through one sleeve but not the other. This may only be a trend here in the A, where everyone sucks.
I'll some mutton chops to my kitten when I'm not drunk. Thank you very much.

In HS for a drama project called "How To Be Cool" we took a bunch of plain white t-shirts and just wrote brand names on them with markers. Finally we decided to actually wear them to school to see what kind of reactions we'd get. Apparently even the preps wearing actual Tommy shirts saw the humor value in our knockoffs. Who knew .3 cents worth of black marker could increase the value of a shirt by $25?
Mite, I can't even picture what the hell you're talking about. Is the bottom of the shirt up over their shoulder?
-
I can handle the question. Yes. One shirt is on normally, then a second shirt is worn that like cuts the person in half diagonally. The bottom is above the arm, resting on the shoulder. Or, at least that is how it is here.
-
Please tell me it's legal to shoot these people.
-
Don't let the law get in the way. Us fashion vigilantes operate by our own law.
-
Please tell me it's legal to shoot these people.
At university, these are the people with rich parents that could probably shoot me, and have their parents pay someone to make it go away.
-
The trends when I was in college seem almost quaint. The main non-sensical item was taking brand new baseball caps and dragging the brim across the sidewalk to fray it, then throwing it in the mud before wearing. The hat was then worn with dress shirts, blue and orange ties, and khakis.
Girls just wore really tight black ##### 7 days a week. That one I didn't have a problem with.
-
This is how I know I am getting old. I wear all my clothing in the intended direction and with the appropriate outward-facing surface, symmetrically. I even put both backpack straps on, one over each shoulder.
-
When we were feeling rebellious we wore the animal skins fur side IN. Little did we know that our youthful exuberance would lead to a remarkable discovery re: radiant heat retention!

So you went to UVa?
Or Florida?
-
I have no idea what a popped collar is. What does this mean?
~Paul
-
Yeah, what the hell is a popped collar?
-
Wearing a collar folded up (so it covers the neck) instead of normally. Like what you do with a coat if it's really cold and you don't have a scarf.
-
And... people would do this, without being mocked? And wear more than one shirt with more than one collar?
-
I've never seen the more than one shirt popped at once. That sounds pretty heinous. These people need to be controlled.
Something like this (http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/070104/a-retarded-clown.gif) seems appropriate...
-
And... people would do this, without being mocked? And wear more than one shirt with more than one collar?
The stereotype of frat guys is to wear pink polo shirts with popped collars. The double popped collar is around, but it is probably for like the stoner/ frat clown. I don't know, I don't really talk to people with popped collars, and especially two of them.
-
I don't get the pink polo shirts, either. Leaving "gender-appropriateness" alone for a moment -- when did pink become trendy again? It looks bad on more or less everyone, especially in polo shirt form. Can anyone explain this to me?
-
Man, that shit was stupid and annoying in the 80's. You're telling me that assholes are still doing it? Man.
-
Man, you cats haven't been to any college town bars lately, have you?
-
I think the idea of a dude wearing pink is to be daring. It's supposed to say, I'm so confident in my masculinity that I can wear pink and still be masculine. The trend possibly started by the rapper Cam'Ron.
Over here, you probably won't find frat kids wearing any kind of shirt with a collar, unless at a club or upscale bar, but that is a different story, 'cause those places have dress codes. The only heads wearing this "popped" collar would probably be straight-up G's. I'm not saying G's sarcastically, I'm talking about G's on the real. I would probably see alot of this in the city, but I don't spend that much time in the city.
-
So you went to UVa?
Indeed. Hence my trip back to C-ville last weekend for the Shakespeare on the Lawn reunion.
-
What are G's?
-
What are G's?
In the parlance of our times, "G" has become synonymous with "gangster," in the urban sense. Additionally, "O.G." means "original gangster," used to reference a person who has been a G since small times.

I googled all over ebay but I couldn't find a single picture of that Levi's Three-Legged Jeans commercial from SNL. I thought that would be a valuable addition to the current discussion.

No dude, that's what WE did. You guys before us actually just backcombed your body hair when you wanted to act out.
Man, that shit was stupid and annoying in the 80's. You're telling me that assholes are still doing it? Man.
Word.
You guys look just like rich dicks from my High School! Right on!
What's next, you get all original and start wearing unstructured poplin jackets over pastel t-shirts and no socks?

Among youths in Britain the shorterning of a word to 'G' is more synonymous with the term 'gay', causing great hilarity among said youths when urban acts such as 'G Unit' (Gay Unit) are referred to. Indeed, in modern Britain it is best to keep up on the slang; many an American tourist has fallen victim to a gang of young adults, innocently asking if they were a bunch of 'Gs'.

well i gotta tell you i had to think a moment when the nice "bloke" in the pub asked me if i had a fag.
it all worked out ok when i left with his girl and we made out on the nottingham city hall steps until dark and then wandered around the city all night while she told me about how old she was and how long she'd been addicted to acid and how her dead grandma's blanket protected her at night while she slept until i convinced the doorman at the Y to let me bring her in so she could sleep and then i walked her to the bus terminal at dawn and gave her my favorite shirt.
so, what i'm saying is, brits got fucked up kids, yo.
