Anyone get their hot little hands on one? I didn't, decided it wasn't worth waiting out in the freezing fuck*ng cold, now I'm regretting that.
Preliminary impressions? Worth the $250?
-
If I was gonna get a new video game system, it'd definitely be the Wii... though I probably won't.
Console gaming lost me when they started adding so many goddamn buttons. Too complex.
Why would I want to use fifteen buttons to pretend I'm using a car when... I can drive a car with two pedals, a shift and a wheel? Or etcetera.
Super Nintendo was my upper limit. I'm not gonna remap my hand-to-eye coordination just to pretend blow up a pretend zombie. I can do that inside my imagination and still remember how to type afterwards. Fuckin' eight buttons, two directionals, a joystick, a trigger... really? There are people who can really do this?
Whereas the Wii appears to be... a boomerang and the button you use to raise your bed in the hospital.
I can wrap my mind around that, at least.
-
some guys on my floor bought a Wii.
the new Zelda game looks amazing. The comment by my good friend Mr Carl C. was "Nintendo Wii-- greatest thing invented by Man in the history of the world."
I wouldn't know, though. I was being a good boy and studying Latin. I'm sure there is some applicable Transcendental quote about me, missing out on the way of the future (something from Thoreau? I feel like he said something about people missing out on the world with their noses in books, "learning.")
-
The Wii's best feature appears to be the ability to load it with classic NES and SNES games for like 5 bucks a pop. That has me seriously considering my first post-SNES console (for exactly the reasons given by LFM. Plus cash-flow)

"Eight buttons" counts the trigger. "Two directionals" counts the joystick.. at least on the PS2/PS3 controller, which are afaik largely identical. The Gamecube controller has fewer inputs, although their layout looks weirder (it makes ergonomic sense, though). I have no idea what the Xbox/X360 controller looks like and don't really care.
The PS controller is a slight modification to the SNES controller structure anyway. The L/R buttons are each split in two (not that most games bother getting much use out of L2/R2) and the joysticks are (in well-designed games) not used at the same time as the buttons on that side, so.. you move your thumb a little and use a joystick instead.
It may seem heinously complex, I suppose, but it's a motor skill much simpler than (and not conflicting with, as you seem to want to imply) touch-typing. I mean, you might as well ask how people memorize the positions of all those little letter buttons, and a keyboard's arrangement doesn't even have the intuitive spatial connection to what's happening onscreen that a joystick or crosspad does. I don't know, do you forget how to touch-type when you learn to play the guitar or drive a stick shift?
P.S.: The Virtual Console does indeed appear to be awesome. Once I have a reasonable accumulation of luxury-spending cash the Wii will be high on the list.
-
The Virtual Console isn't really a selling point for me because I already have seven gigs of completely legitimate rom files to which I own all the corresponding cartridges. I'm piqued because it represents at least a bit of a new direction in game playing. I'm hoping to be able to rope my parents into playing it at least a little while so they can finally understand why their son has spent his life huddling in small dark rooms around a glowing screen.
-
The Wii looks like it's going to be great, and I have three brothers which only makes it an even more completely awesome buy. Sure, we'll probably get a few injuries with four people waving the remotes around but that's part of the fun.
Really, with four young (alleged) males, this console can't fail to go down well in this house. Super Smash Bros. for the victory.
In other news, Sony's cack-handed launch has resulted in people shooting each other!
-

Unless you have a really ker-awesome display and a good controller peripheral, playing the games on console again is really a different experience. I thought this was bull honkey until I played Legend of Zelda on the GCN "Zelda Museum" disc. The problem in the past has usually been that Nintendo's rereleases have been twenty-dollar cartridges, which is too much for an antique piece of software. On the other hand, $8 for Kirby Superstar or Link To The Past is reasonably tempting.
-
I exaggerated for what I hoped to be comic effect, of course. Apparently I didn't get that effect across...
My point is, I suppose, that I don't want to have to put that much work into something that's supposed to be fleeting fun.
When it is that complex, it stops being a diversion and starts being more like a job for me.
Also, I was never into games that were largely about tests of reflexes or the ability to remember and reproduce large multi-button combinations anyway... and the more buttons there are and the more choices there are to make quickly, the less the games are about strategy or anything that's "fun" to me and the more that they are about reflex and memorization.
Which, again, are more like a job to me and hold little interest.
-
I guess my point is that it's not a memorization issue. You don't have to memorize the locations of buttons; if you play video games then the paradigm is in place and quickly learned. If as you suggest you used the SNES controller reasonably well, using the PS controller would be remarkably similar once you got used to it and allowed experiential learning rather than effortful learning to get you going.
There are some games that require memorization, and I don't generally like them much - many "advanced" fighting games have complex and non-intuitive input sequences. However, in well-designed games controlling them is a much simpler and more easily-developed motor skill than driving a car. I don't think that the claim that it requires the commitment of a job is accurate - it does, however, require the commitment of learning how to play, just as most recreations do.
My main issue with 'exaggerating for comic effect' on this point is that there are a lot of people, particularly console zealots, who will make exactly that sort of claim about their least-favorite console's controllers. If I come off as overly-touchy as a result of that, sorry. It's a bit like making a long rant about how much Mac/Windows/Linux sucks, and then later posting "c'mon, it was for comic effect": the long and stupid Holy Wars make people tired of it.
-
there are a lot of people, particularly console zealots, who will make exactly that sort of claim about their least-favorite console's controllers.
Honestly though, the Dreamcast's controller kept me from playing that system more than two times.
I'm probably going to get the Wii in a few weeks.
-
Honestly though, the Dreamcast's controller kept me from playing that system more than two times.
The Dreamcast's controller problems had nothing to do with too many buttons and everything to do with the cross-pad's deadly-sharp corners. That thing would mess your thumb up something fierce. Apparently the size was also a problem for some people but I have large hands.
-
Braggart!
-
I big problem for me was also the move to more 3D games. I suck enough at finding items and passages when I don't have to also worry about depth.
-
... bull honkey ...
Man, I thought I was the only one who used that word! Awesome! Welcome to the bullhonky fan club.
The Wii's best feature appears to be the ability to load it with classic NES and SNES games for like 5 bucks a pop. That has me seriously considering my first post-SNES console (for exactly the reasons given by LFM. Plus cash-flow)
I was ALMOST tempted to buy a PS3, until I heard that they had "issues" with backwards compatibility. Why the fuck would I drop $500 (in a few months when it's actually feasible for me to buy one and have it shipped to rural Alaska) or $1700 on eBay for a PS3 when I can't even play Katamari Damacy on it? Fuck you, Sony.
-

If you haven't yet, you really should play Katamari Damacy.
-
If you haven't yet, you really should play Katamari Damacy.
Hm.
It may violate my strict policy of never playing video games where I don't understand any words in the title.
(Arkanoid is the exception that proves the rule.)

I got one, as I mentioned in the Thanksgiving thread. I got in line at Best Buy at 6 AM and I was number 55 out of 63 people who got a unit.
Worth. Every. Penny.
And every minute of the five hours I spent in line to get it. Wii Sports was included, of course, but I picked up Super Monkey Ball and the Marvel heroes game as well, plus a second controller. So far, Wii Sports has gotten the most playtime by far. SMB comes in second with Marvel a surprisingly distant third. Marvel looks and feels a lot like X-Men Legends and the other games do a much better job of integrating the new controls.
Wii is a system to bring non-gamers into the fold. Even my 63 year old grinch of a father bowled ten frames with us on Thanksgiving. My cousin's eight year old daughter beat me three out of five tennis matches, and I didn't let her win. My six year old nephew p0ned at boxing and tennis and my four year old niece rocked bowling off its balls. My aunt, who had a stroke three years ago, played golf without letting go of her cane. My 59 year old mom hit a double and pitched a no-hitter in the same baseball game.
For people who already love games, though, the Wii offers new challenges. The new controller is intuitive and easy to learn, which means that you can stop focusing on memorizing button combinations and start focusing on playing the darned game. It virtually eliminates repetitive and dull "tutorial" levels and lets you get right in on the action. And the games are designed to be more family-oriented, more inclusive, and more social. There will still be single-player FPSs, no doubt, but most games play at least two if not four (provided you can get your hands on extra controllers).
Wii Sports has the same feel as Donkey Konga, in that it's fun by yourself but the fun increases exponentially the more people you have gathered around drinking (root) beer with you. So, get one if you can. Especially if you have kids. Especially if you love games (of any kind). Especially if you want a console you can play with friends.
Or, come visit Raleigh and we can all play mine.
-
don't tempt me, JL. My holiday break is awfully long.
-
Yeah, I'm debating whether or not to even buy a TV to watch movies on (the PC monitor is okay, but from across the room it's a little small and harder to control than a DVD player and TV) but now with these game systems I'm torn - I haven't owned a console game system since the NES (Super Mario Bros. represent, yo) but if I were to buy any of them I'd probably do the PS3, since it would also effectively be a Blu-Ray player while the BR players are still $1000.
Also, does anyone own a PSP? It has its own screen and would solve the problem of playing video games without a TV. Is it any good?
-

I've heard that the PS3, if you can get one, is a much better Blu-Ray solution than buying a separate BR player.
I really want a PSP, but I hear that it's murder on your thumbs when you're playing Katamari Damacy. So I probably won't get one.
-
What I have heard from friends with PSPs does not at all favor them as a system.
-
My roommate had one and hated it, now he has a dual screen (whatever the nintendo version is) and loves it, but does not play it at all. He is more of a nintendo guy though. Another friend has the psp and loves it. just depends I guess.
-
I hate PSP. The screen is ok, but it has no good games. PS3 doesn't have any good games either. Also, don't get PS3 if you don't have an HDTV. Also, HDTV is a scam.
If you buy only one series of games for the rest of your life, make it the Monkeyball series. Ballin'.
-
But, but... Grand Theft Auto "Stories" games - how else will I play them?
Also, is it possible to like, *rent* a PSP for a little while?
-
A question re: portable consoles, while we're on the subject:
Does anyone know just how small/unwieldy the Game Boy Micro really is? I am considering getting a Micro (as part of a package with some other stuff), but I have sort of short, stubby hands, and I want to make sure I can actually play this system.
-
That thing is smaller than my wallet. I don't trust it.
-
Basically, you can't really comprehend how small the GB Micro is unless you touch one yourself. I had the opportunity once, and it fit entirely in the palm of my hand. I was physically unable to use my thumbs for the face buttons and use my fingers for the shoulder buttons at the same time. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has passed puberty. Also important to consider with the Micro is that it will not play many games that have not already been released. Most development is going to be for the DS from now on.
The PSP has a beautiful screen, but aside from that I don't really like the product. It's too fragile and has too little battery life for me to consider it as a truly portable system, and it's really murderous on the hands after an extended period of time. Anything that makes extensive use of the analog "stick" will cause you serious pain.
I've played extensively on the PS3 (it was my job for a while). You're not going to get anything out of it that you didn't get out of a PS2 except better graphics. Currently the online features are so inconsistent between games that they're not worth considering as an advantage. If you don't have 720P available (and ideally 1280p), do not even think about the PS3. Also important is that a system is only as good as its software, and the PS3's current lineup is weak at best. Once game companies have figured out how to freaking write code that can actually take advantage of the supposed speed advantages the system has, it'll be something to consider. Right now, no. God no*.
I haven't personally played the Wii, but the experiences I hear mirror JL's: It's a great system to play with friends. Like the PS3 it doesn't have a great lineup of titles to consider, but at least with Wii Sports and Zelda there are two solid offerings that will show you some of the system's potential.
*Insider information: cross-platform programmers hate the PS3. The superamazing six-core graphics chip requires its own compiler, and apparently the memory available to each process is so little that most people can only fit shaders on them. If something isn't figured out relatively soon I expect there to be fewer cross-platform titles available for the PS3 -- it's much easier (read: cheaper) to develop for the 360 or Wii.
-
I got the Wii. I just played Wii tennis for two hours. My right arm became naggingly sore, so I learned to play tennis left handed. I look forward to becoming completely ambidextrous.
The system connects to the internet using WiFi. Pimp. If you have no router, a USB Connector is sold separately.
In the Wii shop, you can buy a few NES games for 5 bucks each, a few Turbo Grafix, Genesis, and SNES games for 6 or 8 bucks, and there is Mario 64 for 10 bucks. The Wii weather forecast channel is not yet running. After I buy the points to spend on games, I will probably pick up Legend of Zelda and original Mario Bros. (not the Super Bros., the one before it) tomorrow.
As usual, the system comes only with the three pronged RCA A/V output cable. An RF adapter is probably 30 bucks, but it could be less. Gamecube/SNES/NES RF adapters will not be compatable. The real scam is in the controller. System comes with one. The controller retails for about $35. The second piece of the controller is called the "nunchuck." Ironically it is the piece that is not in the shape of nunchuck. This piece retails for about $31 but in Wii Sports, it is only required for boxing.

oh my goodness, I love that.
she heard her dad say that, I'll bet. Am I right?

Yea, pretty sure. It is funny/sad that he laughs, all while knowing he did that.

Yeah he laughs, what's he gonna do, tell her to shut the fuck up?

I guess it is better than my parents all teaching me the words then blowing up when I said them. Nevermind, good parenting.
-
My friend's son came out with the F word when he was about 3, at the dinner table.
My friend's husband was pleased that he used it in the proper context.
My friend was seriously pissed.
---
By the way, my Wii is still awesome. I can't believe nobody's mentioned Super Monkey Ball yet?
-
apparently when I was a young one, I thought the correct pronunciation of "fan" was "fuck." I'm not sure why.
although my favorite was when I kept asking my mom for "cock!" Apparently my grandmother had been giving me bites of cake behind my mother's back, and I had somehow picked up the word.
...for some reason, until I attempted to spell out my pronunciation of Cake, I never realized what it sounded like I was saying. wow.

Right now I am posting this post from the Wii. Opera Internet Explorer and weather forecast channel are live.

w00t!
Just in time for us to show off for our extended families over Christmas! I was lucky enough to get a second nunchuck and third and fourth wiimotes so that we can play doubles tennis after Christmas dinner. We'll be in a cabin in the blue ridge mountains with wireless web access, with any luck we won't be forced to actually experience nature while we're there.
There being, here:

oh man, JL, I will straight-up be in those same mountains for New Years and a few days before.
-
Oh. My. Dogg.
Inev, you have a PM.
-
No Wii for me. I'd been planning on buying one, but I had to buy these Kate Spades (http://couture.zappos.com/n/multi_view.cgi?product_id=7233830&color_id=99&view=multi) for the missus for santaday. The screamed her name.
-
Woah, major husband points right there.
Maybe she'll get you a Wii in return?
-
I "won" that Amazon contest where you enter your name for a chance to win either a PS3 or a Wii. By the time the contest was over, the "chances" of winning were 1 in 48 for the PS3 and 1 in 28 for the Wii. Anyone else hear of this contest? Well, I won. That is to say, I was give the special opportunity to spend 250 US dollars on a Nintendo Wii and have it shipped to my front door. Considering the price is the same, what I really won in this contest was the chance to not camp in front of a Best Buy, makeshift knife in hand, eagerly anticipating the moment when the helpless clerk opens the door so that I might shank him and sprint to the video game section desperately searching for the last available Wii.
Anyways, it's supposed to arrive between the 28th and the 3rd.
-
GODDAMN! I did not hear about that contest. :( Well, good for you for winning. I've got some sour grapes over here for the rest of us.
-
I stood in line for 3 hours today at Circuit City off of no sleep, with no cigarettes (3 hours is a long time), and right after drinking 3 cups of coffee and 2 bottles of water (I had to urinate badly) but I got a wii. OH. ME. GOD. I am soooo addicted to Wii tennis right now it is not even funny. There is absolutely no where in my area that has more controllers, so that kind of sucks, but overall this thing has already blown me away. Also, I bought Madden, because I heard it was amazing. Right now I wish I would have bought Monkey Ball. Ah, whatever, I will get that after I get a vaporizer.
-
As I've probably mentioned elsewhere, I got a Wii to share with my brothers. Although we only have the one controller, we still get a load of mileage out of it each day due to the lovely taking-turns system present on the fuck*ng fantastic Wii Sports. No, it's not substantial and will perhaps not hold up well after months of playing, but if anything else can demonstrate a product in such an awesome way, I'm yet to see it.
Also got: Rayman for the little ones, haven't had a go yet but looks quirky if nothing else, and Red Steel, which didn't get great reviews but is still a lot of fun. It's a lot like one of those light gun games, off rails. John Woo style.
I've been mega impressed with how the console works, but like many others I reckon the real potential hasn't been fulfilled yet. Which only makes things even sweeter, really.
-
I'm taking a week off from Sports because tennis aggravated this old back injury I have from playing basketball.
I rented "Elebits" which is a little like Katamari, good rental, fun game, you trash the rooms of your home, but I won't buy it.
I got the Wii Monkeyball, and although I've only put in one day of play I firmly believe that it is not half as good as its GameCube predecessors.
-

I separated my shoulder pitching in high school, and in 4 and a half hours of mainly tennis it is getting pretty sore again. I can play without hurting myself, but it is so much funner to act like I am actually playing tennis.
Also, bad deal on the Monkeyball, what is a cool game that I can get that can kind of take the place of a Monkeyball type thing?
-
Right now I wish I would have bought Monkey Ball. Ah, whatever, I will get that after I get a vaporizer.
Does that mean you are sick and need a humidifier-type vaporizer, or that you need to smoke using a vaporizer to enjoy the Wii? I'm confused.
-
As of this morning, the Amazon tracking system says my order has been scanned for departure from the shipping facility in Richmond, CA. That's about 50 miles from where I'm living right now. Yet it estimates the delivery date to be January 3rd. I really hope they're just being super-conservative with that, because part of me doubts that it takes a full week to ship a small box across the San Francisco Bay.
-
I have been meaning to buy a "smoking" vaporizer for a while. I can just smoke and enjoy the wii, but, like, I bought the Wii instead of the vaporizer which I have been wanting for at least a year, but then, everytime I get money I spend it on other stuff.
-
I dunno, Sport, Elebit, and MB are the only games I've played so far, besides for DLing some retro games. I dunno if there are any other multiplayer-party style games out yet. There are a bunch of movie titles, mostly Disney, but those are movie games and probably not even worth renting.
But I would bank on Wario Ware and Wii Play, the sequel to Sports both being pretty strong, both release Jan 15th. Madden's got to be good, no? I would have rented it already, but none there. And Mario Galaxy is Mario, I dunno when that comes out.
If you're not familiar with the Wario Ware series, it's basically the video game equivalent of doing a line of 50/50 ritalin and coke.
-
Oh, I am familiar (and LOVE!!!) WarioWare. I guess Madden is okay. I played another game this morning, but again I turned it off in the 3rd quarter (winning by 4, so it is not like it was a blowout) to play Tennis.
I really don't like football games, but my roommate who knows a ton more about video games said it was supposed to be amazing. We are both at our parents house for xmas break, so maybe it is good and I just don't like playing it. See, I am waiting for like Mario Tennis and Kart and Golf.
I haven't had a system since 64 and kind of forgot about renting. I will be heading to the video store sometime today. I'll have to check out Wii Play online. What is a good wii/ general video game website?

I don't know about shipping... I ordered perfume from Paris, and the seller shipped it on 11/27, my birthday...and it took 4 weeks before it even LEFT the Paris area. Did you know that there is a place called Chilly Mazarin right by Charles de Gaulle Int'l Airport? Heh! Anyway... Here's hoping it will make it to AK in another four miserable weeks.

WHY HAS NO-ONE MENTIONED ZELDA?
that game looked stone-cold awesome.
-
I was very proud of myself for not having purchased a Madden game these past two years. It's like the feeling of a
crack cigarette smoker once they've succesfully quit their most foul and self-destructive of habits. Then, all of a sudden, I broke down. I still haven't purchased the game since 2003, mind you, but I did let my sister buy it for me when we were strolling though a Best Buy the day before my birthday. I got the 360 version. Somehow EA felt the process of marginally improving the graphics required removing every single cool feature from the game just short of franchise mode. I want to be able to design my own uniforms again, dammit! There's not greater feeling in the world than beating the Patriots with a team clad in day-glo pink and seafoam green.

So, uh, I am thinking of returning this already. The controller is SOO inconsistent that it is fuck*ng ridiculous. I am trying to train at tennis and it won't hit the god damn ball when I am swinging the fuck*ng controller. The obcenities in this post don't even come close to how frustrating tennis training made me. Towards the end I was just yelling as I could not come up with any more ways to string together profanity (well, without the female and racial slurs, but I ain't really down with that). I don't know whether I can return it or whether I want to yet, but I am thinking about it now. Sure, the actual Wii Sports games are alot of fun, but game play is different in the training modes for bowling and tennis. Like, it plays completely different, not a very good way to train, one would think. Regardless if you swing the racket it should HIT THE fuck*ng BALL (or, at very least, SWING THE fuck*ng RACKET I AM MOVING MY WHOLE GOD DAMN ARM, INCLUDING MY RACKETAHAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HH). This worries me.
On the plus side, Baseball training (the home run derby one) provided me the oppurtunity to get out some rage. I don't know if how hard/fast you move it is relative to how far you hit it, but before I was angry I hit 3 out of 10 and after I was angry I hit 8 out of 10.
Edit: Melack, I went to your myspace. I have a bass guitar and a bunch of songs I made in Sony Acid (and two in garageband) called naming shitty songs sucks. We should start a band.
Edit 2: Also, I had never bought a Madden game and the last football game I bought was NCAA 2003 for my roommates playstation. I don't particularly like football, and I really don't like Football video games that are realistic, but this Wii Madden was supposed to be different.
Sorry about all the cursing, I just wanted to give you all a chance to experience what it would have been like to be around me when playing Wii Tennis training.
-
I played my friend's Zelda near the beginning of the game and I was like, "nah." I don't feel no 3D Zelda games. He says it gets good, but it's still 3D Zelda and the game is probably like 89 bucks.
What's the tennis problem, are you hitting the ball in random directions or are you just not swinging?
-
I am not swinging, but as I did not make clear, this only happens in the more complicated training mode. It is weird, but I just quit playing the training mode. Also, in bowling, in the normal game I have a pretty vicious curve, not a problem as you just aim to it and you can control how much curve there is, at least to some degree. Then, in bowling training there is no curve some times and I have no idea how to aim a shot at all.
Basically, I have no problem swinging or aiming in the normal game play, then I go to training and it suddenly acts completely different. Like unresponsive almost. And this sucks, because mini games, which is basically what training is, are alot funner than the normal games. Especially when the real games are half ass mini games and it is basically impossible to find other controllers. I have calmed down, and rented monkeyball (seems pretty cool so far), but there is some type of problem. Either that or Nintendo wanted to make training harder by making the game just not respond every 5 to ten times I swing/ making the curve in my wrist completely irrelevant to what happens with the ball. Again, there are absolutely no problems with the actual games, but they are actually simpler than training, at least in my opinion.

I felt the same way about 3D Zelda until I gave the 3D games a try. Wind Waker is extremely easy to get into, although its staying power depends on how you feel about sailing. If you can find it, there's a GameCube disc with Legend of Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on it which shouldn't be more than 20-30 bucks at a used-game store - again, if you can find it, since it was only distributed as a limited-time Nintendo Power promotion. I have heard that Twilight Princess is a particularly slow starter, so if you're not already into 3D Zelda it might not be worthwhile.
Almost totally unrelated, I picked up Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 and it is pretty sweet. 20 dollars for 28 Genesis games - shockingly, mostly good ones. Sonic 1-2, Phantasy Star 2-4, Golden Axe 1-3, Ristar, Altered Beast, a couple Shinobis, Ecco the Dolphin.. there's also a couple of crap games but they don't ruin the experience. A good deal.
-
Yeah, that's the thing. They all start out so slow with such boring landscapes. Video game pretension, GTFO, I think. Action RPG's are dead to me. Goemon Mystical Ninja killed on it. Same thing with those 3D Castlevanias. I don't like the 3D translation.
As for tennis training, I dunno, sounds weird. Just make sure nothing is blocking the signal (because it can be easily blocked by something in the way). And with bowling, if you want a tighter spin, trying releasing the ball later and throwing it so it has less time touching the lane. If you roll it the whole way, the spin is really going to dig into the lane.
Monkeyball, I reccomend darts.

So, why aren't we all sharing our friend codes, and having little Miis of each other punching us?

I GOT MY WII!!!
First impressions: Wii sports is way too much fun for a freebie tie-in game. That said, I still wish Zelda wasn't sold out from Amazon during Christmas. Oh, and I can't seem to get it to connect to my wireless router. It detects it, but it won't connect. Fuckall.

Well, you're welcome to visit Portland.

I still think you're a nazi.
With a skin tight uniform that barely covers the black corset you're wearing. And knee high boots. And a riding crop. Mmmmmmm...

uh... that's cool too.

whoa dude. You get off on Nazi chicks?

Alright, time to gather more Wii friends

Nick: "Shaun"
I expect all of you who've posted your friend codes to add me back.... or else.
Edit: Well, I guess by "all of you" I meant "just Smick". So, uh, anyone else got some friend codes?
-
where do I get these "friend codes"
-
Keith: Go to the Wii messages > create messages > address book. On there it will say "this console's Wii number" That's your friend code. From there you can register other people's.

My updates:
Wario Ware: awesome, but replay value is pretty low. More fun than the Gamecube version, but THE MULTIPLAYER SUCKS BAD, that is a shock. All the multiplayer games use one controller that must be passed around. Get your controller back covered in cheese doodle dust. Man, all yous get the fuck out of my basement. Assholes.
Madden: my favorite game, best Madden ever, completely annihilates the XBox version in gameplay, I'd say a must-own. Playing Wii Madden was like, man... until this, I have never played Madden before. A++++++++
Rayman Rabbits: I despise the entire Rayman series, hate it to hell, my buddy bought the game, and while it exceeded my expectations, I still can't say I liked it. It's a little like Wario Ware, all minigames, but in the mini-games you do the same friggin' thing for 2 straight minutes instead of 3 seconds and move on, and if you fail, another 2 straight minutes of doing some frustrating task. Lame. Don't ever buy any Rayman game, seriously.
Monkeyball: Huge dissapointment. The problem with the multiplayer games is that you play games that would be simple in real life (ie. ring toss) and the precision control required to succeed makes them incredibly frustrating. You think, fuck, this would be so much easier in real life. See, this is why Wii Sports is so good, you're playing pro tennis like no problem, awesome. But getting frustrated over tossing rings onto sticks? GTFO. Madden mini games are the perfect middle ground, Madden minigames are what Monkeyball should be. Punting, kicking, precision throwing, they require precision, but it doesn't make you want to tear your pubes out. Except for the defensive drills, fuck to those. Monkeyball one player, not that good either, I dunno what happened.
All in all, Madden and Sports have been the only serious keepers so far.
-
I got:
Red Steel
At heart it's a shit game but it's so goddamn awesome because of the controller. Aiming is a breeze, and it's incredibly fun. Little touches like being able to hold your gun on it's side when you tilt the controller show the huge potential for better shooters. So, not a great game, but none the worse for it.
Zelda
To be honest I've only been watching my brother, but there's just something about Zelda games that's really unique and awesome. Anyone who has played Ocarina of Time will understand
Rayman
Quirky and designed with having fun in mind. Minigames are generally quite fun, though some are insanely frustrating and/or require one person holding the nunchuck and the other holding the Wiimote in order to complete in a fun way. All in all though, ain't so bad, and is a laugh.
Sports
Will probably pale into insignificance when some real good tennis/golf/baseball sims come out, but this is a lot of fuck*ng fun.
-
I've had the Wii for a few weeks now, and the only game I have besides Wii Sports is Zelda. Oddly enough, I haven't even played it yet. Well, I did play it, but only enough to realize the graphics looks like dinosaur poop when played on an HDTV. I'm waiting til I can find a set of component cables, which I can probably do right now, but I'm procrastinating. I would probably move a lot faster in that department if I wasn't still having such a great time with Wii Sports. I finally got a character to the pro level in boxing, but I'm afraid to ever touch that character again for fear that I might lose and be sent to the ranks of the amateur once again. I'm also having a lot of fun with Wii Golf, probably my favorite game in the set. I suck at playing the slope on the green, but I've gotten so good with my driver and iron that I can damn near shoot skeet with them.
-
In boxing Pro isn't as far as you can go, after like 1600 rank or so you fight your trainer for the championship, and after you're the champ they send guys after you that are insanely hard. I haven't achieved this myself, a friend of mine plays boxing almost exclusively, he has a rank of like 1800. In two player, I can knock him down once, but anyone he fights he can knock out in like 8 seconds. He says the secret is to hold the controllers low and to really snap them to throw the punches, but that doesn't really work for me.
My best was shooting six under on all nine. But I haven't played sports since I bought Madden and company.
-
Ok, check this out, I discovered the secret to Wii boxing.
The key is to dodge punches like a madman. You have to fight like Prince Naseem, never guard and do nothing but dodge. You basically can just step left and right randomly, nonstop until you get perfect dodges and go into matrix mode. When you matrix the opponent, throw a combo, maybe hook and a jab, or two jabs if you're on the inside, or two hooks if you see their hands too high. Never take the offense, do nothing but counterpunch and you'll pretty much never get taken down.
-
I played Wii Sports over at a friend's house, where I discovered you can win almost every tennis match if you choose the 'up' position and just flail the wiimote madly whenever the ball comes near. You will flap around like an armless Neo and deliver some awesome volleys.
I also discovered you can make some truly disturbing Miis. They are named Angelina and Steve and they will haunt your dreams. I set them to 'public' -- can they go meet other Wiis online, or do you only get visited by friends? I hope they are somewhere scaring random strangers.
-
yeah, guys on my floor made a couple of really terrifying ones. Little mustache, aviator sunglasses... terrifying.
-
I made a deal with The Boy and Spouse to split the cost of a Wii if The Boy got together half the ca$h. Little booger routed up enough soda cans in 8 days to make his half of the nut.
Keep laying on the game reviews as I'm using y'all for inputs on this.
-
If you're a shoot-em-up nerd who loves the classics, I recommend the Metal Slug Anthology. 7 ridiculously nuts shooting games with goofy movie parodies, hilarious enemies, and, as is common in the genre, near-impossible to survive difficulty. Additionally, if you're not that into the challenge but like the idea of the game and want to see the silly stuff they have, there is an infinite credit option.
As an example, my favorite bit in one of the games is that you can be turned into a zombie, and you have this exaggerated zombie-swagger that is just hilarious to watch, and also your special move is a vomiting blood attack which is pretty bizarre to watch. If you liked Contra or Gunstar Heroes (downloadable on VC by the way) then you should get this. And get a friend to play with you. So much better that way. (But if you like contra you already knew that)
And then, if you want to download stuff from online if you have the option, outside the obvious classics I recommend Alien Crush (a pinball game).
-
I saw the XBox 360 thread and got jealous, so I'm making a half-hearted attempt to resurrect this thread and get some Wii friend codes.
My code is 7408 5071 1336 5149 (note: that is not a credit card number). I'm adding those of you who posted yours earlier in the thread. Any other Wii owners, speak up.
-
So, uh, does anyone like their Wii? I haven't played it in a long time and wish I had gotten a 360.
-
So, uh, does anyone like their Wii?
Yes.
-
We play a lot. Little P likes to swing a Wiimote around in Tennis, and he is starting to get the hang of using a thumbstick so he can make Mario run around. (We downloaded SM64.) We also use it to play youtube videos for him.
We don't get to play a lot of games that we wouldn't want him to watch us playing, so Mario and sports games are taking a front seat right now. Our xbox, on the other hand, hasn't even been plugged in since we moved.
YMMV.
-
I played Rockstar Table Tennis for Wii last night, and it was pretty good. Definitely one of the better multiplayer games out there. I might have to pick it up when it comes out. That, followed by cleaning six months of dust off my Wii.
-
The ladyfriend and I played Warioware with StripWii rules.
It was awesome.
-
Ahh sweet! As JL and Jough already know, I got the SO a Wii for his birthday, exactly a week ago. It's been hella' fun. I rented Mario Party 8 and Elebits last week (other suggestions have been made, but it's really hard to find Wii games for rent near us). We have WarioWare and Paper Mario sitting downstairs waiting to be played tonight.
JL - how do you play YouTube videos with your Wii?
smick - what are the rules of StripWii?
You know what? When or if Katamari comes out on Wii, I'm going to take a vacation from work. Or maybe I'll just quit.
-
Download the Opera browser from the Wii Console. You can access the Internets if it's networked.
You could even post here.

Something about going online and accessing porn the Wiimote just seems ... right.

This is and has long been one of Nintendo's big market strengths: the platform's most popular/signature games are all-ages-friendly without compromising gameplay quality. In the old days this often led to a significant amount of third-party-game censoring, but franchises like Mario, Zelda and Kirby consistently produce system-defining games that a parent doesn't have to worry about their child playing. (Although I still haven't played Twilight Princess, so I don't know if the "darker" feel there goes beyond character designs.)
Whether this is good or bad for "serious gamers" is something that can be debated (I personally like these games quite well) but it's one of the reasons Nintendo's market share, while not gigantic, is tenacious.
-
smick - what are the rules of StripWii?
Wario Ware is a straight on head to head game where you do little activities that last for maybe 12 seconds. If you succeed, you pass the wiimote. If you fail, you remove clothes. If there are no clothes, there are 30 second "Favors".

ZOMBI THREAD!!!
Nnnn'kay. Mrs. West got up at 5 am and stood in line at Target with the enviable result that we are now proud owner of a Wii (which we can't use for a week). Can't wait.
Anyway, I'd like an expert critique of my purchases thus far.
I got Wii Games (mainly for the extra controller), Mario Galaxies, Madden '07 and a cheap Billy and Mandy game I found online. Also 2 Nunchuks.
Questions:
How big a memory card should I get? Is a 1 Gig sufficient?
What can I do with Wii points? Can I go online without them?
Knowledge me up, imaginary internet friends.
-
Madden '07hardest Madden ever
Questions:
How big a memory card should I get? Is a 1 Gig sufficient? Never needed one. There is probably sufficient memory for you to be able to see how big of one you think you will use before/if you buy one.
What can I do with Wii points? One thing you can do with them is buy old games. Actually easier to do through a computer then download to Wii, sometimes the system Wii store is buggy.
Can I go online without them? Yeah, you just download a browser on the Wii somewhere, haven't done it since I got it, but it was real obvious.
-
Memory card, if you're talking SD card (like you might use for a digital camera), you don't need one unless you end up buying hell of virtual console games. If you mean big grey game-cube memory card, you only need that if you want to access old gamecube saves, so again you don't need one for wii games.
Wii comes with 512 gig built in memory and that's generally sufficient for save games etc. if it runs out you can transfer to an sd card.
Wii points you buy for money online and you use them to buy software (like an internet browser) and games (virtual console, classic nintendo, sega etc. stuff) so you don't need them to go online. There's no real multiplayer community for the wii like there is for xbox or pc so the few games that have online multi don't charge for it.
Wii games I'm not familiar with, unless it is the one called wii play over here.
Wii sports is the bizeldy (I think the console comes with it? not sure).
I am yet to play galaxies (waiting till after christmas) but I've heard it's fantastic, if you liked ocarina of time on the n64 you should check out the new zelda and I'm playing through metroid at the moment and it's been a blast too. I also got to play some elebits the other day and a part (possibly because) of the terrible voice acting it was some quality stuff.
-
Wait, so was your browser free, because I could swear mine was?
-
It was free when I got it but it was in beta then so I got it for free but I think it costs something now, I could be wrong.
-
Yeah Aug, I agree no memory card needed.
Mario Galaxies is really fun.
Wario Ware is great for learning all the functions of the Wii remote and is lots of fun as a game too - definitely worth the rent.
We've yet to connect ours to the net because we don't have a wireless router yet, so all this other info is useful.
-

May as well throw in my two cents. I've actually been using the same 1 gig SD card from my digital camera, and it holds all my pictures Wii shit with plenty of room to spare. I don't imagine you'll be needing much more than a gig. SD cards are pretty cheap now anyways.
Wii points are for buying stuff from the Wii store. Classic games and whatnot. You can also buy a version of Opera (which was free when it was in beta, but now costs money) that you can use on the Wii for web-browsing. It's pretty cool if you want to watch Youtube on the TV.
As far as games you, you've already got far and away the best game available in Mario Galaxy. I'm not the Madden guy I used to be, so I can't really say much about that one. Sorry. But! There are plenty of other cool games like Wario Ware, Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, Paper Mario, Trauma Center, etc. There is a lot of crap on the Wii, though, so you've got to be careful not to stumble into any licensed shovelware.
And yet Wii Sports still manages to be my favorite game on the system. Go figure!
-
I bought the cheapest memory card they had, like 256megs for 14 bucks or something. I knew I would never use it, I just wanted the enjoyment of putting into the slot. A little bit sexy.
-
dang, dude, you payed 14 dollars to do a sexy act to a piece of hardware.
-
No spoilers, but FYI the SO beat SM Galaxies in no time at all. At the end we were like "That can't be it, right?" Then the credits started rolling. Still a super, awesome, fun game though.
-
Oh yeah, RE4, best port evar.
Also my understanding is that you can 'beat' galaxies, as in finish the storyline, and only need to collect about half the stars? As in there are galaxies and such you need never visit if you don't want to play the hard stuff.
-
No, he collected all the stars. And I helped! So awesome.
-
How is the co-op mode, I'm hoping to get my Lady in on some of that action. She is into video games but normally rts' and action rpgs, she tends to avoid anything like platformers and fps' where there's pressure to react quickly etc. but I was hoping this assist role would be interesting enough that we could play it together.
-
The co-op mode is awesome - your star catcher can stun many attackers, help you jump higher... it's pretty awesome. The SO's a pro, but there were definitly situations where my help was needed. I'm not good at games like this, but the SO is able to seriously help me when I play, though I preferred to be his helper - these sorts of games are too damn frustrating for me!
-
What SS said. I make Pedro do the hard jumping puzzles, but I like doing the "collect all 100 purple coins" levels (which he hates) so we make a good team. And a good P2 is essential on some of the boss levels.
Most romantic video game ever.
-
...there are "collect all 100 purple coin" levels?
my brother has something like 44 stars, and we have not encountered anything like that yet.
-
Oh dang. Sorry for the mini-spoiler.
Yeah, see, we have 80 stars. There are 120 in the game, and a whole bunch get unlocked when you hit 60.
Enjoy.
-
oh, shit, 120!
awesome! I read a thing online which said there were 60, and I was so sad. We were so sad that we were near the end of the game.
This game is so good.
-
Damn I got sidelined on Mass Effect, I need to get back to this.
Also, I heard there was 121. But this may have been a paranoia inducing rumour.
Ash: Sit that lad down with Super Mario Brothers. But give him a snickers or something because that's a pretty funny comment.
-
That's the coin that only shows up if you beat it both as Green Mario and Red Mario, yes?
(Don't look at me, my recent gaming credit is as a Medium Bass Player on Rock Band and slowly trying to beat Bases Loaded for the NES without any cheat codes. In the dictionary, under the words "casual gamer" there is a picture of my stupid ass, playing Dr. Mario for fun.)
-
Yes JL - most romantic game ever. Purchased for the SO for our anniversary, played on new years eve right up to kiss time.
New Super Mario Bros for DS is not romantic - it is the opposite. For me it is the "don't touch me, I have to get to a save point" of video games. The SO finds this charming and cute though.
-
which reminds me, lamest thing ever: hanging out with like 7 guys and 2 girls on new year's eve, and at midnight the two girls kiss each other.
I mean, it was awesome in its own way, in retrospect. I have trouble thinking of my friend that I have known since semi-small times as a "hot lesbian," but, you know, her girlfriend was totally a hot lesbian. She is like, the man-directed porno version of a lesbian.
Also, suddenly I'm at a point where every single star that I haven't gotten in Mario is wayyyy too hard. I have not gotten enough to be at this point already, and it's embarrassing.
-
(Don't look at me, my recent gaming credit is as a Medium Bass Player on Rock Band
I've spent more time than I'd like to admit pondering bringing the mic stand up from downstairs and playing 2 player Rock Band on my lonesome.
-
I was never able to get into Guitar Hero for the simple fact that I've been playing guitar for nearly a decade, so the potential for vicarious rock stardom was never as ripe as it was for most other people. That's completely different with Rock Band; I totally geek out on the drums. And though it took some time work up the nerve, I've been doing a lot of singing too. So, yes. Rock Band = awesome.
-
How would you do the Tamborine function, then, though?
-
Make a primal grunt. Really. The mic just picks up the sound of being slapped, so you can make any real quick outburst of noise and it will register fine.
-
Yeah, in Donkey Konga we felt silly clapping, so we took to tapping the side of the bongos with an open palm.
This became especially important when we discovered that a loud clap could trigger everyone's bongo in multiplayer, and an ill-timed one was particularly insidious because it could destroy an opponent's streak bonus.
-
I got a Wii. It's pretty awesome.
Got Super Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes, and Endless Ocean. Also I got Super Metroid on Virtual Console. I feel a little bad about getting the Hot Expensive Awesome New System and using it to play Super Metroid but only a little becase Super Metroid is awesome.
-

The ladyfriend, at my protests, ushered us into Big TV Land. The first thing I did after setting it up was to play a round of Super Mario Bros. on the Wii.
-
we have a big TV. (http://flickr.com/photos/theinevitable/1243252967/) I feel like it wasn't a great decision to spend my money on a big TV.
(after that picture was taken we bought a real stand, and my roommate hooked up his nice stereo speakers.)
also, selling it at the end of the year and splitting the money seems less and less realistic by the day.
-
Okay, so this is probably a function of my particular age, but my youth and early adolescence were during the period between video games getting big and the Internet getting big. This meant that the people I knew could trade unsubstantiated rumors and there wasn't nearly enough information at large and easily available to immediately debunk them.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl is just exactly the game we all lied to each other about having read about in Nintendo Power. Yes, Link and Mario do team up with the guy from Metroid to fight Ganon and King Koopa. And yes, Sonic the Hedgehog is actually there too. So is Little Mac from Punch-Out but it's a cameo role. Oh! Oh! And Starfox too!
I don't know how well it will appeal to people not my age, but for me it seems squarely targeted at the people who were kids swapping lies about what the next Nintendo game was.
-
the guy from Metroid
Ah, the good old days, back when we didn't have 100,000 pages of pornographic fan-fiction reminding us that the Metroid lead was actually a lady.
-
Ah, the good old days, back when we didn't have 100,000 pages of pornographic fan-fiction reminding us that the Metroid lead was actually a lady.
Yeah, none of the kids I knew were good enough to beat the game fast enough to get the ending where we see Samus with her armor off. And then one of us got the Nintendo Power with JUSTIN BAILEY ------ ------, we tried it, and Holy Shit Minds Blown.
-
So you can now download games for Wii Points, generally fairly cheap. I got a couple, and I like them.
My Life As A King is kind of Final Fantasy and SimCity's bastard offspring; you're a king trying to develop your tiny settlement up into a proper fantasy-RPG city. Hire adventurers to explore the surrounding dungeons and wilderness, give them quests, make sure your town has the best upgraded swords and spells for sale, and so forth to develop from Crappy Town Where The Game Starts to Awesome City 2/3 Of The Way Through Where There's Endgame Equipment You Can't Afford Yet. It's fifteen bucks and not a bad deal at that, but the add-on content you can buy is kind of overpriced.

Seriously.
Is this Wii-only, or is it on the DS as well?
-
As much as I hate to disappoint after that awesome mammal picture, it is Wii-only. (I hope a Can will make up for learning this.)
WiiWare is also going to be getting releases of Sam & Max Season One and Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People, which to me as a Mac user is awesome.
-
so three years after it hit the market and at least a year after everybody else got theirs, i finally got one.
though it had wii sports included as ever, i got wii sports resort for the table tennis and i have been playing my ass off. the kicker of it is it's easy to play, almost just like holding a real paddle, but the opponents are really good at ping pong. we got it on sunday and i've already made it to "pro" level but i've plateaued since these other players are really really tough.
also: trivial pursuit is for suckers, i wish i could get my money back. house of the dead is fuck*ng tough to aim quickly; maybe there's a sensitivity setting i can futz with.
it helps that i have a 46" teevee, though that might be the problem on house of the dead.
do ye with wii still play and enjoy? what games should i get, and how many nintendo points should i shell out for?
-
i play my parents' wii(effing GROSS, dude!) fairly often. take my suggestions with a grain of salt because i dont really like too many video games:
x boom blox
x tony hawks downhill jam(mildly entertaining, at least)
games ive bought from thier 'old school game retirement center':
x super mario bros-NES
x super mario world-SNES
x dr mario party-???(we had tetris/dr mario for SNES back in the day, but i dont know if thats the system it originated on...)
x mario kart 64
-
I don't have many games, since I don't have all that much time to play. Right now I'm trying to finish up de Blob, which is goofy fun, not seriously difficult.
-
Wii Fit is pretty interesting. The training stuff is fun for a few weeks, and there are a few balance games I still play regularly (ski jump, baby!). But they get kind of old. However, I am still using Wii Fit for weight/BMI tracking and for the balance tests.
-
i was just chipping in shots in the golf training mode on wii sports and one totally bounced in and out of the cup zomg
-
AW--I got Gold's Gym Cardio Workout, which is basically the "rhythm boxing" from Wii Fit taken to the next level. I think it's a better workout than anything Wii Fit has to offer (albeit still not as thorough as actually going to the gym, but better than no workout at all).
-
I like my Wii Fit. We got a snowboarding game recently that uses the balance board and that's pretty cool. We go back to the Sports package all the time. My daughter loves to play the Tennis one. The system definitely has legs.
-
My girlfriend, who's interest in games as far as I knew pretty much began and ended with Mario 3, brought home a Wii a couple of weeks ago. Just totally out of the blue. I can say that I never would've bought one. If I was going to throw down for a new system, I'd be more inclined toward the Xbox 360. But now that it's here I have to say that it's pretty OK. They still have a lot to figure out. I think they lean a little too hard on the point-and-click features just 'cause they think they need to. And they should stop making baseball games until they get some better ideas of how to do it. However - and I'm absolutely not a golf guy - but Tiger 10 is truly amazing. They've got that down. So far I'd give the Wii an overall grade of C+, but Tiger gets a solid A.
-
the couple wii platformers i've played are pretty damned good: madworld and de blob. i have this feeling that i need to get super mario galaxy because i'd love it, but dayum i don't even have the charger station yet.
they really do get you on the accessories.
-

FWIW, it doesn't seem like the Wiimotes go through AA's that quickly.
-
Mario Galaxy and Zelda are good.
Except now I went too long without playing Zelda, and I forget what I'm supposed to be doing right now.
-
i burned through a pair of energizer lithium AAs in a couple weeks when i was playing wii sports resort table tennis for a couple hours a day
(i've toned it down lately)

My mom asked recently if she could borrow our Wii for a few weeks (now that we've got an xBox) because she wants to buy Wii Fit and doesn't want to invest in the whole system until she decides if she'll actually use it.
Way to go, Mom.

Wii Fit is good if you use it. It's not that the exercises are all that (although some of them are lots of fun -- ski jumping is great). I use it almost exclusively as a tracking device lately, and it's worked well for that (almost 40 lbs lost since February). And it's fun to play with.
-
FWIW, it doesn't seem like the Wiimotes go through AA's that quickly.
I don't know - I play the golf game for about an average of one hour per day, and my girlfriend plays even less than that and a pair of AA's has yet to last us a full week. Maybe we're just too hardcore.
Mario Galaxy and Zelda are good.
I've been meaning to buy the former. What is the Zelda game called? What are the controls like? Just wanna stay away from the point-and-click bullshit.
-
it is called Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I don't recall anything about the controls, except that there is not much pointing and clicking. Maybe you have to point and click when you use the bow?

I use it to track my weight as well, although its somewhat perverse since I'm actually looking to put on weight at the moment. My goal is for the thing to declare me obese, which should happen at about 193lbs. Caveat: bodyfat percentage can't be above 20% for this to be a success.
-
Against my better judgement I got New Super Mario Brothers Wii today. It is so good a Mario game.
-
I want to play that game so badly! I almost ran out and got it today but I have so much work to do on projects I can't really afford the distraction. So I post on internet forums instead.
Have you gotten a chance to try out the multiplayer?

Huh. My goal is to get out of obese. I'm close. I'd like to know what my bodyfat percentage is.
-

Sadly no, but the multiplayer looks hella fun. It incorporates gameplay elements and mechanics cherrypicked from all the previous 2D Mario games so it makes a very well-developed and polished game overall.
-
Sounds awesome, I'm going to have to get it this weekend. Is the multiplayer online? I'll have to dig out my friend code if it is.
With Mario Galaxy and New SMB on DS, Nintendo has really been batting 1000 with the franchise. Well, I guess the latest Paper Mario wasn't quite as great as the GC one, but I did really like the "flipping" mechanic.

Unfortunately there is no online multiplayer. This is where Nintendo has sort of been falling short with a lot of Wii stuf.

I agree, and I'm not sure whether it is because they're afraid of it because they're afraid of it tarnishing their family-friendly reputation (witness the way people behave on Uno (http://kotaku.com/gaming/vision-camera/nudity-drugs-invade-xbox-360-uno-199899.php) of all things) or they genuinely don't think it is an area of gaming that is worth investigating. I lean towards the former, given how the friend code system and lack of any chat system in most games work to shelter the player.
It is surprising though, given how Nintendo usually loves to try new things to make the gaming experience better (and how multiplayer friendly their consoles usually are).

You can buy a pair of skinfold calipers and convince your wife to learn how to use them. Its pretty simple, 4 measurements or so and look up the results in a table. Since some of the measurements are inaccessible to yourself you need a buddy.

I do not own a Wii and have only occasionally played the device at friends' houses. However, I thought that the whole marketing scheme of the Wii's appeal was to market aggressively to the casual gamer and only serve the hardcore gamer outside of the main focus of their business model.
Mario being the cornerstone property, I'd imagine that they'd want to keep the focus of the game on in-person casual-gamer-type interactions and not suggest that there were all sorts of things that you could only enjoy about Mario via a disjointed isolating pursuit.
The whole "I have reprogrammed my keyboard so that I can buff my manna while charging my Rod of Holding while also yelling LEROY JENKINS for ten hours every night, breaking only to sleep and work the job that allows me the money to buy more buffed-manna-rods" versus "here is a tiny candy-coloured guitar, lets get eight people together, get drunk and pretend to play it" split.
-
On the other hand, a cornerstone of their Mario Kart Wii marketing was showing people playing against each other from across the country or the world, and it's been prominent throughout the marketing for the DS (another system following the marketing strategy which Nintendo terms "Blue Ocean" for reasons that make sense to the Japanese executives). Online multiplayer is not the province solely of hardkore uebergamers, and including it does not "suggest there are all sorts of things that you could only enjoy about Mario via a disjointed isolating pursuit" - rather, it involves (from a marketing standpoint) putting a little tick on the box that says "Nintendo Wi-Fi supported" and a page in the manual that says "You can even play with your friends over the Internet, and here's how". The actual reason they don't do it isn't marketing, but because Nintendo doesn't feel like paying programmers to make netcode for the game.
It may come as a shock to you, but there is actually a middle ground between "drunk people having a good time together" and "this high-larious stereotype of gamer butter-trolls". I don't know what the fuck crawled up your ass that made the concept of playing a video game over the internet so offensively loathsome to you, but sometimes you want to play some fuck*ng Mario with a friend.
-
While I genuinely see how emphasizing casual-gaming benefits the Wii's image and how it would make sense to de-emphasize hardcome gaming elements...
Uh, the rest of it was a riff, Ben.
I thought I made it abundantly clear by stereotyping casual gaming as harshly as hardcore gaming at the end, there. Thought "candy-coloured" was a tip, to be honest.
I'm not actually all that judgemental a guy (most of the time) but I do enjoy exaggerating my opinions to comic effect and if I do not make that clear enough, I am sorry.
I did not mean to insult your +5 Sword of Reckoning, Ben. It is a rad sword as is clearly connotated by its +5 status.
(See what I did there?)
-
I guess I didn't notice because you used the exact same tone and terms as when you're actually saying what you mean.
This is a known danger of the Internet and also of being consistently confrontational in extremely verbose ways about things that appear arbitrary to other people.
-
Oh, I do sometimes have difficulty showing the difference without using an emoticon or writing "haha" or something. This is basically why I do not take offense and am just explaining and apologizing for the misunderstanding.
All I can really say is that when I sound like a slightly-crazy person, I am probably being sincere. When I sound like I am a panelist on Bizarro O'Reilly Factor, I am probably playing off my own slight-madness for comic effect.
I... I dunno. In text and standing outside of my own head, it is not necessarily easy to parse, I guess. Just assume that if I am being particularly crazy-sounding, I'm probably kidding. It is probably best for all.
(Also, it helps to remember that I actually only get that worked up about manners of religion and politics. If I am doing it about less life-and-deathy things, I am just fuck*ng around 99.9% of the time. I do not actually, for example, believe that Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen were roommates at Yale, were in Skull and Bones together and regularly have money fights on their yachts. I do, however, enjoy the idea of that kind of a world to no end.)

I just re-read the "raise your hand if you are uncircumcised" thread for voting purposes, and I hereby forbid Ben and sMets arguing.
Or rather, I strongly discourage it, given that I have no actual power here any more.
Seriously, dudes. Get a room.

Aw, mom, but he.. that is, we.. he started.. aw, MAAAAAN.

just hug it out, guys. damn.....

I'm trying to decide if its worth the bother to fiddle with Wii Homebrew Channel to watch DVDs on the Wii instead of buying a new DVD player.
-
i'll dig out my friend code one of these days. the missus just picked up "Just Dance" which looked fun on a commercial. i just hope the *OVER 30 SONGS* don't grate.
is muscle march available in the U.S. yet? that one looked like a blast.

"HEADSHOTHEADSHOTHEADSHOT!"
Modern Warfare 2 is basically like crack. I don't know if we have addressed this elsewhere.
-
I have not told the boy that the Xbox has a gold membership on it.
I prefer to not have him congregating with the wide world of reprobates in my home... so far.
-
I have been playing Mass Effect through again, this game is fun.
Games that are too heavy on the fast-twitch-shooting stuff just freak me out.
Although yesterday I noticed that after a day of playing these games, I drove really well. Like, with a normal amount of aggression, and I did not feel nervous and agitated. Maybe this was an illusory connection.
-
Oh man, GTA IV just makes me want to drive over medians and lawns and peel out so hard, all the time. Tony Hawk games have a similar effect, so it's probably good that I don't own a skateboard.
-
When I got back from holiday I spent basically 4 days solid playing Assassin's Creed two, up till the wee hours each night. I haven't got caught up in a game like that for years now, felt good to geek out over something again. Really looking forward to Mass Effect 2, though that means I need to get my 360 fixed.
-

YES. When I was playing Tony Hawk, I'd be out somewhere and find myself thinking, "If you could get up there, you could grind along that rail, then do a kickflip over that gap."
-
pro skaters/et al are pretty much the only video games i like. actually, not so much pro skaters as tony hawks american wasteland.
its 65% about the tunes, to be honest. when i first played the OGTH, i was all, "dude! a video game where you can make a dude do unnaturally rad skate tricks AND listen to punk rock at the same time! SHITYEAH!!!!"

MEGA MAN 10 IS OUT ON WII WARE.
-
Is it just me or is 10 harder than 9? I finished 9 with some difficulty, but I haven't been able to finish even one level of 10. I think I need to focus on just one boss instead of jumping around.
-
MEGA MAN 10 IS OUT ON WII WARE.
AND PLAYSTATION

AND PLAYSTATION
I think it comes out for the PSN in a week and XBLA at the end of the month. I should have waited for the PSN version because I like the D-Pad on the DS3 better than the wii-mote or classic controller, but for some reason when I got it I thought it was going to be exclusively Wii-ware.
-
It's a little harder than MM9. Also all of the weapons kind of suck while the weapons in 9 were the best of any game in the series.
-
It's a little harder than MM9.
Nooooooo
-
Yesterday I got up to the boss of the third level of Dr. Wily's castle ("Block Demon") and holy SHIT that was like the hardest boss in the entire series. I think next time I play I'll beat it easy, but holy FUCK that shit is not for kids.
-
MM9 was what confirmed to me that I Am No Longer Good At Video Games.
I downloaded the demo. After five tries I successfully crossed the first chasm jump. I deleted the demo.
Man. I was really good at Mega Man on the SNES. I could hold a charged shot while walljumping up a chasm. Now? Not so much.
