Title: Weird celebrity crushes?
Post by: littlefallsmets on March 02, 2007, 12:05:34 am
Basically the premise of this post is to discuss crushes you have on famous people who possess traits such as you usually would not be attracted to, be it insofar as looks or attitude or style or what have you.

Perhaps you find these crushes quirkily interesting? Perhaps they teach you something about yourself or shed an insight on you that you would like to share with the intersnets? Maybe there is something to learn about the human condition from who you dig on?

I'll start:

I quickly develop crushes on smart ladies with radio shows.

Sarah Vowell on "This American Life" on NPR, for example, I know in my mind is kind of plain-looking but man, am I enamoured with that weird lady. She is too much of an awesome person than to not actually be a hot nerd girl.

Terry Gross, on NPR's "Fresh Air"... she is not only completely weird looking but also way too old for me but... she is just so smart and interesting and she has such a gorgeous voice that I want to pretend that someone else just poses as her for pictures.

Liberal morning show host Stephanie Miller is... a pretty woman but also a bit out of my age bracket and totally not my kind of skinny lady but... she's just got an energy and she makes me laugh. I can't accept that she looks like that college professor you'd maybe take a spin with if she wasn't married, in my brain, she is a hot nerd girl in her early thirties.

Somewhat relatedly, I am completely convinced that Nancy Pelosi and Judy Blume were both hot when they were young and it is just that they are a lot older than me now and so I can't appreciate it.

Does anyone else have weird out-of-character crushes like these?

um, Scarlett Johannson? I am kind (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/87/240187601_2f89a3ccc7_b.jpg) of obsessed with her. (I sadly never took a picture of the 2 additional Scarlett pictures once on my wall-- one of her looking pouty, and one Lost in Translation poster.)

I am so disappointed in her for dating Justin Timberlake. I got in a loud argument with my friend in a public place over whether it was "utterly despicable and disgusting."
I took down my pictures of her after I found that out. Except the poster.

I've always had a thing for Jennifer Capriati, even though I've been told on more than one occasion that she looks "like a hoss." I just don't see it.

That's not really un-typical for me... I've always had a thing for tennis chicks. But why her, who knows.

EDIT: when did the five-letter-word-for-a-thoroughbred get the automatically-edited treatment? I know I haven't posted in a while, but damn.

I have a total girl-crush on Beth Ditto of The Gossip. She's ridiculously hot in an awesome nerd-girl way. Also, Christina Ricci and Janeane Garofalo are just adorable.

Oddly, I don't really have any male celebrity crushes.

I'm in that boat and paddling like the dickens. Steffi Graf, too. I remember watching another Grand Slam win and telling the room me & her could produce some kick ass athlete like kiddums.

so yeah, i've lusted after mixing genes with not explicably attactive to me tennis players.

[linnea talking about girl crushes is hawt]

James Gandolfini of The Sopranos. I have no idea why, but I would pretty much fall over and do almost anything he asked me to.

My Kryptonite, however, is intelligent men. A brilliant, articulate man starts talking to me, and I'm done. I pretty much become powerless to resist.

It is a definite fact that this message board will never oppose the idea of a girl likin' on girls.

We should have one of those needlepoint things over the digital door to the place that says: "Girls Liking On Girls Is Completely Welcome Here".

My gramma has one of those.

...not one encouraging lesbian conversation, of course.

Hers said "In this house, everyone is nervous" in Italian.

Gramma is... kind of a weirdo.

The lesbian one would be weirder for her to have. Though not really sexier.

I totally have the same taste in girls as Linnea it seems. I also had a big teenage crush on Brooke Satchwell who no one will probably know (unless Judy is one of the english folks who like australian soapies).

I seem to get crushes on semi-obscure TV character actresses, most notably Cynthia Stevenson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0828906/) and Vicki Lewis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0507852/).

Hubba Hubba!

Oh also: I know it's a pretty stereotypical one but my girlfriend and I agreed around the time we watched once upon a time in mexico that if either of us got the chance to do johnny depp then no harm, no foul.

AW: Damn, Vicki lewis, I haven't seen her in anything for ages. She is indeed a cutie.

I figured out a while ago my preference for the ladies often seems to boil down to (and I think this might be a general trend among geek guys) geeky and assertive, but not actually big enough to hurt me. That kind of makes me feel hypocritical and chauvinistic but tiny fiesty girls need love too damnit.

Dude, you are being crazy.  Justin Timberlake is the man and I am willing to get into a loud argument about him with you.  He is an excellent singer, and, dare I say, underrated as an excellent pop-musician.  He is a funny and likeable dude (above-average SNL episode).  He has said this in an interview:

“The drugs that I do have been done in my own private time. I’ve never been arrested… though that’s not to say I won’t... I’ve done way too many drugs already. I’ve already inhaled and I’ve already - who knows…?...  I’m just like everyone else - I get completely plastered, I’ve done my fair share of drugs and been caught places with my ##### down. It’s just that I make sure there are no cameras around.”

Now I'm not just saying he is cool because he is a drug addict, but he said that in a public interview and that is gold.

I will admit, he has made some bad moves.  Dating Cameron Diaz?  Yuck.  I don't understand the appeal of that woman.  Also, Sexy Back kind of hurts my argument, but I blame his producers for that one.  But he popped Britney's cherry and he bangs Scarlett Johannson.  All of these things more than qualifies someone to be the man.  Which segues into my next point.

When I found out that Scarlett and I are basically the exact same age, born in almost the same place, well... man...  Never more than on that day have I felt like I have completely wasted my life.  MAN FUCK, TO THINK SHE COULD HAVE BEEN MINE.  FUCK.

Anyway, there is nothing weird about having a crush on her, she is a goddess.  Also, Justin Timberlake is cool.  Slick Miles poster, by the way.

The closest thing I have to a weird celebrity crush is that I think a young Paul Newman is an attractive man.

I
never cared enough about a celebrity to go looking for pictures of them online or anything, though.

In the sexy because they're talented catagory, it'd be Hugh Laurie (http://www.hughlaurie.net/brianbsmith/bbs07.jpg), Regina Spektor (http://www.myspace.com/reginaspektor) and Gary Oldman (http://hem1.passagen.se/boatman2/hm2old.jpg).

Also in a sexy androgynous way,  katherine moening  (http://www.thelword-fr.net/katherinemoennig/uk/galeriedet.php?id=25) is nice to look at, though I can't be bothered to watch The L Word.

Okay, not a celebrity crush per se, but since we're talking about "nonstandard" things that attract us...

I read today's xkcd and was stunned... this is a perfect example of one of my biggest turn-ons. I feel so nerdy, but I actually have fantasies about being the girl in a situtation like thisparticular strip (http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/hamiltonian.png). And you know, where he says, "Hey, do you mind if I jot down some notes on your chest?" I'd be all, "Oh god, yes please!"

*blush*

Huh, so she's not Italian but instead multiracial? She is really cute, I agree.

Off topic, I remember seeing a program on TV once about Neo-Nazis, and one of them claimed to be Italian until his Aryan girlfriend realized that he was actually half African-American and half Caucasian.

I've lost track of what anecdotes I've told where but...

Quote from: side_show
Regina Spektor

I have a very strange connection to Regina Spektor.

One of my best friends from back home, Adam, went to college with her... long before she was famous... and had an intense crush on her. As my girlfriend and one of my other friends from high school all went to the same college (SUNY-Purchase) I stumbled across the fact that there was this singer chick he had a crush on and...

Man, did I tease him about the crush mercilessly... in that sort of "well, just ask her out" kinda way.

I'm very bad with that sort of thing. I matchmake people by teasing them.

And then a couple of months ago, I hear of this singer chick that all the hip kids are into and... holy shit... it's that girl I would always pick on Adam about having a crush on. And I thought to myself, what a small goddamned world.

It was also funny because, like, Adam came out as bisexual a coupla years back and is now marrying a masseuse dude in Tucson. So maybe... I teased him into... gay?

(At the same school, my other friend there was repeatedly hit on by the older Pete from "Pete & Pete". Who had also repeatedly hit on the only girlfriend I ever made through the internet when they were teenagers and "Pete & Pete" filmed in her hometown. It is a very tiny world.)

It seems that the nickname students have for it is SUNY-Poor Choice.

There seem to be a few distinct advantages to the place, such as it being very friendly to various sexual lifestyles... in terms of people's self-definitions, it has the highest percentage of GLBT students of any public college in the country, like 75% or something...

And it is great if you are into the uber-competitive anything-for-success conservatory thing for the purposes of certain fields such as the various performing arts.

But the campus looks exactly like a prison and the vast majority of the population seemed to be either back-stabbing psychotic careerists or complete nutbar flakes.

When I met my girlfriend, part of why we clicked so quickly was... at least partially because she had been going to a school where there were very few boys who liked girls and... uhm... while she is somewhat into ladies as well as dudes, most of the girls there were psychotic careerists or nutbar flakes.

So a liberal-but-somewhat-naive Clark Kent-ish country boy such as I was in my late teens was pretty much the complete opposite of anyone she had the possibility of dating at Purchase.

So... it worked for me.

yeah, um, he is basically...
we have joked since we were in like 6th grade that he'd drop out of college and live off of his parent's money. He is super pretentious, an asshole, but unbearably creative. it pisses me off. he writes plays and songs and short films which make me jealous. Although, obviously, he has some issues as of yet with making them not scream "look how smart I am! look how creative this plot is! I'm so ironic and clever!"
Anyway, I am going to call him to see what is up. Not looking forward to it.

When I read that strip I was all, "Wha- hey!  Isn't he going to finish telling us about the hamiltonian path?  Aw, he's having sex instead?  Lame!"  So the ending was a relief.  I've definitely been the annoying person who is thinking about math when she or he is supposed to be having sex.  Hopefully I will meet more people who can collaborate in both senses, simultaneously.

A few months ago I had a weird celebrity crush -- Tony Snow.  He is a jerk, and that's the point.  I kind of figured that if we did do the deed he would spice things up by calling me a dirty commie treehugger.

Also, a while ago I went to a dresden dolls concert and was full of moral outrage at the fact that Brian Viglione was consistently not having sex with me.  He was scrawny and weird and faux-angsty with lopsided hair and a soft nerd voice.  Damn.

There are rumours that Fry is going to be a guest star on House at some point, which would be wonderful.  I think Laurie is the more attractive of the two, and since Fry's always beating on him, it fits with my tendancey toward being attracted to bottoms.  Also, Mystery. *sigh* Yes, they can both go on my list.
I mean, Jeeves and Wooster makes it even the case even more so!

As for this Scarlett Johanssen muttering - more and more that woman makes my skin crawl. Every time I see her speak in a film, I just want to rip my face off and scream. She's a hopeless actor, and I don't know, just doesn't do it for me. I mean, if she could act, I would probably find her a hell of a lot more attractive, since talent is a thing for me.

Fuck yeah. I love Wodehouse, and I love Fry and Laurie. I am always just blown away that somebody didn't fuck that up.

Hey, but while we're on the subject, watch 'em in Black Adder (http://www.imdb.com/keyword/black-adder/) (Gen. Hogmanay Melchitt!) and The Young Ones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtUzjurOYN4) (Lord Snot!) as well! In that episode of The Young Ones, you not only get Fry and Laurie with Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane and Ben Elton and many other funny folks, you also get a performance by Motorhead. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIBOvTovppM) (One of Lyle's favorite songs!) (http://orezscu.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html)

I can't imagine what that would have been like. I guess I could compare it to 2nd season SNL, with Candice Bergen and Frank Zappa. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtAjotVrYpc) Of course, I was 8 then, so I couldn't stay up that late, and if my Mom had seen that clip of Frank, her head would have exploded.

Thanks for the heads-up on that, smick, that movie looks sweet. I actually already knew that Stephen Fry wasn't in the pu$$y business, though. Part of the draw in a hypothetical situation like this, I think.

Sorry no video for F&L on Black Adder, but I am done.

I suppose it depends on what you want him to be weird enough *for*.
He's certainly weird enough to be thoroughly entertaining.
Not sure I'd want to have a celebrity crush on him, I don't think I could handle the rejection. If I recall he likes the ladies; he just also likes to feel pretty.

See... this is one of the reasons I am very glad that I've never wanted to dress up like a lady.

I'm 6'6" and somewhere a little over 300 pounds depending on the week... and am of Italian and Eastern European extraction. There is pretty much no way in hell I could look anything like a pretty lady in any possible fashion.

If I had the inclination to transvestificate, I would be pretty much the weirdest looking transvestifier on the goddamned planet.

There is nothing scarier than when I am at a convenience store in Hollywood and I am standing in line behind a crossdresser who is three or four inches taller than me. You would be surprised how often my attempts to get a lotto ticket and a Snapple involves running into an Insanely Tall Tranny.

Oddly, they are always of the African American persuasion. Is this because the gene-pool for African Americans tends to skew taller or... is it because it's easier for African-Americans to crossdress in public because scaredy-racists are too afraid of them to persecute them for their sexuality or... what?

Especially when you consider that I'm talking about neighborhood that are more Latin in population than African-American or generic-white-person-American, it is just freaky-ma-deaky.

Gotta play to your strengths, and props to you for knowing them. I, on the other hand, look spectacular in drag.

Also, since there was a recent reference, Amy Sedaris, (http://feministing.com/bustcover) or what the hell, David Sedaris. (http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter/vol30/vol30n10/Graphics/sedaris.jpg)

It would probably be very, very, very wrong to suggest both.

Yeah, there is a level of femmie that is very attractive to me - you know, the rock star thing.  The eye liner thing.  That is so sexy in a man.  I actually remember being at the video store and being all "Hmm.  Eddy Izzard.  Do I think he's sexy?  He is wearing eyeliner.  I suppose I need to rent this and find out."  I turns out that no, Eddy Izzard is not sexy to me.  Probably something to do with his comedy - in that I don't find him funny in large doses (that talent quotient again).  See, I think the sexy quotient, for me is pro-femmie, anti-trying-to-pass-as-female.  Same goes for the ladies.  I love a lady who is boyish, but not trying to pass for a boy.  A lady wearing a little argyle sweater, but still having styled one's hair or put on make-up?  Sexy.  It's something about nuance, I suppose.  The implication of being happy with one's gender, but willing to dance on the line.  That is hella sexy to me.

I'm sorry but there is only one *an the Man and he signs off with "Excelsior!" You'd also have to say "true believer" a lot.

ok, have you ever seen someone who was so much the essence of what you find attractive that... it became a parody? I realized today that that is why this girl in one of my classes makes me so uncomfortable. It is the me-equivalent of a fake-tanned blonde with big fake breasts. I look at her and I realize how silly the things I am attracted to are.

At the same time, she is really pretty.

Just so, I dig ladies who are ladies but can pull off practical ##### (is it weird that in my mind being feminine relates directly to how impractical the clothes you are wearing are?).
I'm fairly sure I can't manage to be this type of sexy as I'm not huge on make up for either gender and am at a loss for other ways for me to achieve femininity.

I think he was using an example. The average guy likes tan women and big breasts. But then the average guy sees a woman with comically large breast and who is horribly over tan and that woman is so over the top as to be a parody of his preferences.

tI saw a woman that took his own preferences to comical extremes. So like not just nerdy/emo glasses but like Buddy Holly/Drew Cary glasses. Stuff like that.

no, it was like... she was short, and slim, not busty, overly thick lips, really thick dark hair... I can't explain it in a way that conveys how over the top she is. But basically it was very surprising and confusing. She is also Israeli, which confirms the hypothesis that I fall for Jewish girls real easy.

I am pretty much the same way about... like... Mediterranian girls.

Spanish girls, Italian girls, Greek girls, etc. They basically drive me crazy. I would guess that is because I am a quarter Italian and half Slovenian, which though it used to be part of Yugoslavia is pretty much culturally like northern Italy. All people from mountains just off the sea.

However, the love of my life is Irish and German and a little Sioux so, like, there's that.

She's pretty much the complete opposite of the swarthy girls that drive me nuts.

yeah, Mediterranean girls do that for me, too. Shit. I went to Italy for 2 weeks once... and I thought I could die right then and be happy.

none of the girls I have dated have been anywhere near this, either.

Well, there is a lot of genetic overlap between the Southern European ladies and the Semetic ladies. Many shared traits. Some of the hottest girls back in college were members of The Tribe, so to speak.

However, for reasons having nothing to do with their ethnicity religion or hotness, they were also usually bitches of mythical potency. No, it had nothing to do with their faith or genetics or the rudeness of their titties why they were bitches.

It was because they were raised as wealthy Long Islanders. And wealthy Long Islanders are pretty much the most crap people in the English-speaking world. Lower-middle-class Long Islanders can be awesome people, especially people from the parts of Long Island that might as well really just be Queens East.

Wrestling's Mick Foley, for example. Wrestling's Andy Kaufman, for a second example. My girlfriend, for a third example.

But oh, the sense of entitlement on a rich person from Long Island.

Good Lord, they're like the worst rich people ever.

At least rich Texas people are funny in a sad kind of way.

Ain't nothin' funny about a Long Island rich person.

EDIT: The reason that they are so awful is that... not only are they assholes in the way that the born-wealthy are pretty-much-always assholes? But, because of their general proximity to New York City, they still believe that they are fuck*ng street and fuck*ng urban and fuck*ng tough.

Even though they yacht and play polo and shit, they're fuck*ng tough because two or three times a year they take the train into Manhattan to get drunk with people who are merely upper-middle class and it makes them feel so goddamn experienced.

Oh man. Worst rich people ever.

neko case-- pretty pretty.

Jenny Lewis-- not pretty, people. She is not attractive. She makes great music. She has a great voice. But no, you do not want to look like her.

edit: I feel the need to clarify-- I am specifically bitter about this. Because I watched, over the course of a year, my then-girlfriend slowly ruin every positive physical trait she had in order to "look like jenny lewis." This enraged me, because JENNY LEWIS IS NOT PRETTY! FUCK!
Title: Re: Weird celebrity crushes?

As an impartial third-party, I have looked into the Jenny Lewis matter.

I have taken internet pictures into account and can render judgement:

This Jenny Lewis is not pretty. I do not find her sexually attractive.

She is not UGLY, exactly, but is very mannish in the face and her skull seems to have been mushed around a bit when she was young and she got stuck that way, with that pronounced "Skeletor" like facial structure that is pretty much not attractive to me.

She looks a good deal like one of those transsexual dudes who got the start on his/her hormones in their teens so that his/her stayed boyish and developed some female secondary traits naturally at the end of his/her growth cycle, such as slender shoulders, not much of a male brow, wider hips, some natural bust and butt growth, etc.

And yet there is also a weird boyish maleness remaining that is completely unattractive to a straight dude such as myself and probably most pinning-the-back-end-of-the-Kinsey-scale straight dudes.

Not that there is anything wrong with hanging out in the middle of the scale there and digging boyish ladies or girlish men... but it pretty much isn't within my range.

And the eerie thing is that... she isn't a MANLY kind of unfeminine. She is definitely is a BOYISH kind of unfeminine. It is not like a hearty mannishness like the lady from THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN or the lady from THAT 70S SHOW.

It is an off-putting boyishness that allows her to be not at all pretty or sexually attractive without being ugly in any measurable way.

Such as you look at her and say "Huh, she looks like a completely presentable 13-year-old boy. I am not repulsed but I am not aroused in any way."

This is my verdict after seeing, like, four pictures of her.

Wouldn't that sort of make her a perfect "weird celebrity crush" in that it sort of makes no sense to find her attractive?

I think that if I have time to Google images of a singer I have never heard of because someone is posting about her appearance on a messageboard, I need to get a full time job again.

She didn't look that horrible to me but, people, what the hell. No one looks good with bangs like that. Why don't people realize this? If you have bangs like that, please stop.

I think there is this thing where nerd-girls realize that nerd-boys look upon Bettie Page as a hot-nerd-girl icon and... just really take the idea and fuck it up.

It worked on Bettie Page because she was a really gorgeous lady whose only physical weirdness was that she had a really long forehead. Miles of forehead on that otherwise-hot-lady. That is why the Bettie Page bangs worked on her and... pretty much only her.

So many ladies learned the wrong lesson from her hair and... pretty much made a trainwreck of their bangs.

It might work on Christina Ricci, though, who has a huge forehead and is hot when she not painfully thin, which she is half the time now that she is the goth Oprah in terms of yo-yoing weight.

Will someone explain to her that nerd-boys liked her BECAUSE she was a little fluffier than most actresses, not despite it? I mean, jeez.

Maybe she realises this and is trying to discourage the nerdboy market?

Although now I need to go watch the opposite of sex or something.

I dunno.

I am a nerd-boy and how terrible "Buffalo '66" was pretty much turned me off already.

"Look, lady, I'm sorry, I can't sex-imagine about you anymore. You read the script to Buffalo '66 and you reacted in a manner other than having the writer killed by the mob. I'm sorry. It... it probably wasn't going to work out anyway."

I have to agree with the giant forehead=yes bangs theorem because I have a giant parabolic-mirror forehead that painfully reflects light into people's eyes unless it is covered up by bangs. For people with smaller, non-reflective foreheads, don't wear bangs because your forehead is not a danger to society!

On the subject of weird celebrity crushes, I have an unexplained crush on Thomas Pynchon (http://www.hyperarts.com/pynchon/images/Pynchon_Simpsons.jpg).

Jesus H. Christo, Buffalo 66 was so terrible that I wanted to gouge out my own eyes, then I reconsidered and wanted Vincent Gallo's head on a pike for my time and trouble wasted on his awful movie.

I still think Christina Ricci is hot, though. She's still one of my favorite actresses. But I HATED her character in that movie.

I am unreasonably attracted to Cillian Murphy, particularly his beautiful transvestite incarnation in Breakfast on Pluto.

I had the most massive crush on Christina Ricci a couple of years ago, but I think what I really wanted was to be in love with Wednesday Addams.

When I saw trailers for "Red Eye" I was basically wandering around wondering why I'd never seen Christopher Reeves' daughter in any movies before. I didn't even know he had a daughter!

And then I was told that was a boy. I am still not certain that is actually a boy.

Huh, interesting.  I was just gazing upon some photos of him a few days ago, while not thinking of this board, and thinking he is just lovely, and was very attractive in 28 Days. Then I saw photos of him in Breakfast on Pluto, and that raised his sexy quotient for me too.  I was just looking at him with the blond hair and the Barbie style suit.  He is too damn pretty.  Those lips beg for kisses, and are probably good for other things too.

Was the movie good Teatime?

I really liked the book, which I think is pretty vastly better, so I am not really the best judge, sideshow. That said, I did enjoy the movie quite a lot. I'm just unsure of how much I would have liked it if Cillian had not been so masterful. Moot point! (he was)
