Sworking fine for me.
Correction. The Fanflow works fine. Regular Ass-Bar doesn't.

Are we the Statue of Liberty for Onstad's wretched refuse? Ok, but everybody has to change their name when they enter here.
TOUAMB, Standing for liberty against the forces of fascism since 2003!!!

That's kinda how the dumbrella story ends, isn't it?

Isn't dumbrella more the pilgrims?

I discovered recently that all the Dumbrella boards seem to be gone now. It felt kind of like the time I found out that they were tearing down the building I went to high school in.
-
The assbar comment feature is still down. Not just making new comments, but the entire history and evidence that commenting ever existed is gone. This is how it should be.

I think I had better check to see if mine is still there.

I think I had better check to see if mine is still there.
Mine is (http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=sydney+grammar+st+ives+preparatory+school&fb=1&gl=us&hq=grammar+st+ives+preparatory+school&hnear=sydney&cid=0,0,9356949845961622127&ei=xWnLSqiMNojcsgOv74GOAQ&ll=-33.715808,151.171618&spn=0.007461,0.013411&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A)
-
They built a new elementary school right next door to the one I went to, then tore the old one down. So my elementary school is kind of still there, kind of not.
Further elementary school weirdness: my high school sweetheart is now a first grade teacher there.
-
my school is still going strong, but it has not been such a long time. although the new headmaster is slowly destroying it (removing beautiful old buildings that are in perfectly good shape to build ugly, showy, expensive buildings. although I guess this will have stopped, as over 1/3 of the kids at my school had parents in the banking industry).
The school I went to until 3rd grade is no longer an elementary... I'm not sure what it is. A middle school?
-
The idea of nostalgia for elementary school or high school is fascinating to me.
I can't blot out most of those memories fast enough.
Most of the people I care to know of from then, I'm still in touch with.
There is just so little nostalgia.
-

Headmaster. Did you go to school in Manchester?

I'm with you. I'm kind of over this now, but I use to fantasize about becoming rich, but not so I could live the Good Life or become a philanthropist or anything like that, but so I could buy the properties that caused me misery when I thought of them. And then I'd bulldoze the fuck*ng buildings and like develop peaceful parks with creeks and walkways and shit like that. So, that would include my Jr. High School, one of the places I worked at in college and an apartment complex I lived at when I was also still in college. Somewhere along the way I got some therapy and grew up, so I'm good now.
-
The idea of nostalgia for elementary school or high school is fascinating to me.
I have this great memory of listening to Seasons in the Sun on the radio while sitting in the car outside the school waiting for my brother to come out.
-
As a total nerd I don't get the high school hang ups that a lot of people have. Even people I went to school with have some vendetta against the place that I half remember as being quite pleasant and have half totally forgotten. I liked the place but I think it failed to make a big impact on my one way or t'other.
On the other hand I went past the other day and discovered that they'd sold the playing fields to the hospital next door so they could make a multistory car park, which kind of bugged me. But apparently they're going to put a new field on top of the car park (this is less insane than it sounds because the school was on a cliff and the fields were many stairs lower than the school buildings) which I admire for being weird but am still kind of put out because the the loss of continuity. I like old crumbly buildings better than shiny new ones is what I'm saying.
-
I went to school in the US, but it was a rich-kid private school.
I felt nostalgia for high school until this one day where I went back, and spent 20 minutes walking around looking for people I knew, and then I thought "wait, this is what high school was, wandering the halls looking for the few people I liked. High school sucked."
-
I checked google earth to see that my elementary school is still there. It appears they've built a much larger school on the same property, probably a middle school. I also noticed that the school grounds didn't have a fence around it which is pretty uncommon these days. I also also noticed that the building is sorta wing shaped which is cool. I always thought it was just straight.
Reminds me of Charlie Brown for some strange odd reason.
-
I recently returned to the US after a long absence and I found the sight of all the schools with heavy fencing around it quite chilling. I suppose you can get used to anything, but during my time there I couldn't help looking at that and thinking, 'how does nobody see this as an indicator of a massive problem?'. I used to frequently leave high school at around lunch time if I was getting fed up or wanted to go smoke Marlboros in peace - I guess the kids these days are locked in?
My old high school was also fenced-up, which was a bit redundant really since it is already mostly surrounded by a moat.
-
Was there a drawbridge to cross the moat? I've always wanted a house with turrets.
-
i think it's just as much to keep the pedophiles out
-
i went to the elementary school with all the white trash/ghetto kids. the original building had burned down in the 60s and was rebuilt smaller, and as a daily activity center for senior citizens. they rebuilt the school about half a mile up the street soon after, so i went to the new one(it was new in 1969, but by the late 80s, it was not so new, yet not so old).
really, the biggest impact i can remember making in those days was that i was known as "the kid who will cry if you pick on him long enough".
-
I used to frequently leave high school at around lunch time if I was getting fed up or wanted to go smoke Marlboros in peace - I guess the kids these days are locked in?
There was a graveyard on my high school campus for the dead Brothers. That's where people smoked Marlboros, in the graveyard for dead monks.
-
The school building I was talking about that got torn down was actually an office building in midtown Manhattan. For most of the time that I went to my school, from 7th grade to maybe 10th, we did not have a building, and the school was on two floors of an office building. We had no gym and what I most fondly remember is taking the subway to a creepy bowling alley on 14th street, which counted as gym class. We played a half-assed game as fast as we could and then spent the rest of the period going shopping before we had to get back to school. Those were the joys of a decrepit New York City in the 1970s.
-
oh man, the best era of NYC. Decrepit.
I keep being told that the NYC I see now is disneyland, and damn, it is still pretty cool seeming to me... I get to go there for radio station stuff in 2 weeks, which is exciting as hell.
my roommate grew up in brooklyn and went to school in manhattan, and because of years of subway rides to school he can fall asleep in any position, and set mental alarms for himself to wake up at a certain time.
It is funny that he grew up in NYC and can find his way around there, but gets confused about which direction from our house downtown St Louis is.
update: my roommate went to your high-school, wombat.
-
update: my roommate went to your high-school, wombat.
Now how did that come up? Do they all know the nostalgic stories of the days before they were born when we could go bowling for gym class?
-
1. yes, I told him and he was like "oh man, I've heard about that, when it was in an office building"
2. I suddenly just KNEW that you guys went to the same school, and checked your facebook.
-
School is great, but I think the sudden demise of assetbar is more interesting. Say what you will about it being a morass of gibbering, but I quite liked the clusterfuckyness of it. Other achewood discussion forums can sometimes be a bit like a private chatroom for old regulars, some of whom are maybe a bit too into themselves.
Isn't it deeply weird that the plug appears to have been pulled with absolutely no acknowledgement from the Stadmeister? I feel like I'm at a dinner party and there's muffled screaming coming from the next room that noone is acknowledging.

Aw, I was just talkin about this other achewood place... over there somewhere...
Cans or other virtual voting things are terrible, because they make weak-minded people like me want to seek approval.
So, but keep giving me cans though.
-
1. yes, I told him and he was like "oh man, I've heard about that, when it was in an office building"
Well, next time I'm sitting in my rocker on my porch, send him over and I'll tell him about how in those days we walked to school uphill both ways barefoot in a snowstorm and wrote our homework with quill pens.
Oh, and about how ALL the students were girls.
-
What's the point of using A-Bar without comments? Why keep it up at all if there's to be no commenting?
-
Now he has a message up: AssetBar's strip archive is down for a few. View our old-style archive here (http://www.achewood.com/list.php).
-
I expect Onstad was horrified by the bandwidth bill for a site that was 90% febrile wibbling, and 5% criticism. And 0% monetization.
-
...febrile wibbling....
those both look like words that seem imaginary because im too stupid to know them or have been around people that would use them.
-
febrile means feverish...wibbling is just awesome.
-
OK I am confused by the main topic of this thread and since it doesn't seem to be going away... There is nothing wrong with the Assetbar that I can see, and people are commenting the same as always. Did people who don't pay used to be able to comment and now they can't?
-
How dare those people become a community in which Achewood was a glancing focus rather than the driving point.
I'm guessing if he put out a comic more than once a week this would be less likely to occur.
-

I was just trusting what has been said in this thread. I haven't checked. "Boo to that." "Why find out?"
-
Did people who don't pay used to be able to comment and now they can't?
Bingo.
-
Did people who don't pay used to be able to comment and now they can't?
Ahh, the gate has been raised to keep the riffraff out. Nice that we have spies on both sides of the moat.
-
I'd thought it was that way all along.
-
I, for one, enjoy only talking about Achewood when there's something going on there to talk of.
And not paying for it.
I double enjoy not paying for it.
-
The way he's been pimping out the fan-flow on the achewood.com main page I tend to think he's got a fair bit going on behind the curtain.
I have no idea what a fan-flow is. It apparently happens more than monthly.
-
There have been times where I considered buying merchandise but thought the better of it because the dude charges for the fan-flow stuff.
Like "dude doesn't need MY support when he's monetizing his scraps instead of actually, you know, creating the actual strip".
It isn't entirely sane but this line of thinking has made me reconsider buying merch a few times.
-
I would so much like to not get into a discussion again about why These Kids Today think that there is something wrong with a person charging money for creative work, and how this attitude is so much more surprising coming from certain people, who I assume are not going to give that novel away, if they ever finish it.
“artists need to make money to eat and to continue to make art.
artists used to rely on middlemen to collect their money on their behalf, thereby rendering themselves innocent of cash-handling in the public eye.
artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks.
please welcome them. please help them. please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money.”
— Amanda F Palmer from her essay Why I Am Not Afraid To Take Your Money (http://blog.amandapalmer.net/post/200582690/why-i-am-not-afraid-to-take-your-money-by-amandal)
-
Oh, I'm not saying that the feeling's fair, I'm just admitting that it's there.
The changing of the social contract from "you're supporting this strip by buying merch and collections" to "you're supporting this strip by paying for ancillary material that quickly became the main output" is what irks me, though, not the idea of the guy making money off his work. I'd like to do the same someday, of course.
It's the rules changing again and again.
-
Wombat, this is the interweb. I pay my entry fee and I expect everything else to magically find a way to pay for itself with ads and convincing investors that one day they'll find a way to make money (twitter).
jk.
-
I thought the way the internet worked was that everything supported itself by selling t-shirts. Come to think of it, why doesn't Twitter sell t-shirts?
LFM, just curious, how many t-shirts and collections did you buy before Assetbar?
-
I thought the way the internet worked was that everything supported itself by selling t-shirts. Come to think of it, why doesn't Twitter sell t-shirts?
If Twitter sold t-shirts they'd actually have a revenue line on their income statement. But, according to them, that would be distracting and harmful to the dream they are chasing.
"How do you make money from Twitter?
Twitter has many appealing opportunities for generating revenue but we are holding off on implementation for now because we don't want to distract ourselves from the more important work at hand which is to create a compelling service and great user experience for millions of people around the world. While our business model is in a research phase, we spend more money than we make."
-
"Wombat Inc. has many appealing opportunities for generating revenue but we are holding off on implementation for now because we don't want to distract ourselves from the more important work at hand."
Yeah, I could get used to that.
-
There can be reasons why a startup like Twitter shouldn't turn on the revenue right away. There are posts about this on http://www.techcrunch.com
Wombat: Yes, there used to be (still are?) two versions of assetbar. One is free, the other is pay-only. You can still get to the free one, even though it's broken... go to achewood.com, and click on "discuss." it shows you a blank page. it used to show you the free assetbar.
It is a mistake to say that the free assetbar was not bringing in revenue for Onstad. Every bit of content that you put out there for free is fodder for public discussion about you. The idea is to have your content floating out there in whatever system people use (google, youtube, the school bus on the way to school, etc.) That way, people who have never heard of you may be exposed to you when other people talk about your content. It's also a good idea to have plenty of free content on your site, so that people form the habit of hanging around your site. The longer someone hangs around your site, the more likely they are to form a connection to your work, and to buy something. Even if the free content on your site isn't directly about your work very much, as the free assetbar wasn't very much about Onstad's work, it still served the purpose of giving people some reason to hang out and so absolutely yes, it had to bring in some revenue from people who otherwise would have read the achewood strip and then gone away and forgotten about it.
Of course, I can see assetbar being a liability because anyone can post anything on it and it's poorly regulated. While that is part of the charm of assetbar, it is also a liability... but anyway, assetbar is content, and it was free. (at least the free version was free.) So in providing free content, the free assetbar was an asset.
The trick is to determine how much content you float out there for free, and how much you want to charge for.
Obviously, if an artist decides to force the take down of every possible copy of their work everywhere, then that artist has no exposure anywhere and may slip into oblivion. If on the other hand the artist allows high-quality copies of her work to be reproduced everywhere, then few people may pay for authorized/licensed copies.
I logged in and tried the pay-assetbar after the free assetbar went down a few days ago, and I wasn't happy with the interface of the pay-assetbar. You got to look at the stuff that Onstad posts, but if you wanted to use it as a discussion forum, the interface was actually more kludgy and difficult to use than the free assetbar. If you compare the discussions in the free assetbar to the pay assetbar, the discussions in the free assetbar are much more extensive. I think that is probably due to the interface on the free assetbar being easier to use and being more responsive.. it's less clicking and scrolling on the free assetbar to have a discussion than on the pay assetbar.
Some people might prefer the pay assetbar, but I think that the possibilities of the interface are absolutely different between the free and the pay versions, and that will impact what kind of content is generated, and how valuable it is for the site.

Maybe $50 worth of gifts for friends who are into Achewood. Also, got the GOF book at a signing.
I dunno what to say, here, I don't think it's wrong to be bugged by the transition from:
"Here is this thing, buy stuff to support it" to "Here is less and less of this thing, buy stuff to support it AND pay every month to see the deleted scenes" and now, apparently, "Here is less and less of this thing, buy stuff to support it AND pay every month to see the deleted scenes or maybe also post in the official forums".
I understand that the guy's gotta make a living and, intellectually, I am all for people figuring out how to make a living off of commerical art.
But the arc of how it has gone down oogs me out. Feels needlessly mercenary and shortsighted in terms of how one actually maintains a fanbase.
Doesn't charging more and more for less and less eventually choke off the entire economic model as opposed to growing your audience more and more the old way and as your fanbase grows and grows, you gradually sell more and more merchandise?
-
I subscribe to paid AssBar, and I have for a long time, I almost never post there, and here's why. The monthly price is less than a magazine and it's a way for me to support Achewood. I think the $3 is worth it to read a few extra strips per month. I cringe when Onstad busts out the kneepads for his core demographic (i.e., current Todd story arc), but other than that I mostly enjoy the guy's work and will pay to support it. I know most of the folks here and I prefer to read what y'all have to say about the strip.
-
Well, I didn't know before this that the NYTimes had a bestsellers list for "graphic books," but the current Achewood is number 3 on it, so I'm guessing his fanbase is doing OK.
Wait, so there were totally different discussions going on on the free Assetbar? There were two unconnected official discussion forums? I missed that entirely.
-
I understand that the guy's gotta make a living and, intellectually, I am all for people figuring out how to make a living off of commerical art.
I find this an... interesting distinction to make, considering that someone at some point has to pay for the art, as for everything else. Printing a book costs bucks, and so does running a website... What do you contrast to "commercial art"?
-
Well, a lot of people do webcomics as a hobby or as a supplemental income at best. I'd say that for the vast majority of people, it's a labour of love where the minor tee-shirt sales or ads or whatever MIGHT cover the webhosting costs, some art supplies and an extra couple of dinners-out a month and that's it. If that. Probably, actually, the vast majority of people recoup little of their sunk costs at all.
I get the feeling that maybe the weird off-putting cash-grab of the fanflow might be a sign that the dude made Achewood his sole source of income too soon and that the slow bleeding-out of the golden goose's neck are evident in things like the petering out of actual new content and the reshuffling of the ass-bar and so on and so forth.
And especially if the dude is starting to make good money off the mass-published collections of the strips, doesn't it behoove him to advertise those books and keep generating new full material to be put into future books, as opposed to being distracted by putting incomplete extra material into the fanflow just to maintain the conceit of the subscribers-only section?
Like the dude got in over his head and threw together the idea of charging people for the dribs and drabs without any sort of plan, not realizing how much it would restrict him from keeping the main site... and the main content of his work... going?
I don't know. If the books are selling so much that he's going to get people to pay money for scraps, it almost feels more intellectually and creatively honest to just make the whole endeavour a pay site. If they aren't, it seems to make more sense to concentrate on the real material to keep driving new fans to the books and posters and making your money there.
Splitting one's attention into two and trying to skim money off the top of one of the two damaged streams of thought... it seems counterintuitive, creatively and economically.
To be honest, if he went all-pay, I'd probably reluctantly subscribe, just because I like his stuff.
But making the main stuff sporadic and uninspired so as to churn out more even-lesser material behind a pay-wall, man, it seems like the worst of both worlds.
-
Wombat get's a can for citing the wisdom of Amanda Palmer.
I haven't done anything to support Onstad ever. I am a dead fuck*ng weight around his website's broadband. Though you might be able to argue that my main motivation for keeping up with Achewood these days is talking to you guys.
-
A friend of mine went to the recent signing in Seattle not to see Onstad (he had never heard of him), but rather to see Tony Millionaire. Apparently there were a few people there to see Millionaire, but the line was out the store to see Onstad.
I think at this point that it's safe to say that Onstad is big. Not Webcomic big, but just big.
-
Really?
I guess I am fatally 20th Century but it is hard to imagine that the guy with the television show (sure, on late-night cable, but a television show) is the smaller celebrity than the dude with the online comic strip that updates twice a week if we're lucky.
Is this some sort of weird way that living in Los Angeles, having held some bottom-rung entertainment industry jobs and having many friends who still do, is actually putting me behind the curve, still thinking of the creative zenith as fundamentally involving having a film or a television show made of your property? Is it a provincial Los Angeles thing... am I living on a reservation for the last people deluded enough to try and make money in the old media... or is it just my upstate New York hick showing?
ANYWAY:
If Onstad is really that big, it would probably be more creatively productive if he did the whole thing for pay... but this Mister In-Between split-focus stuff seems to be unproductive, anyway. Maybe it is wrong of me to feel this way but, to me, it is more important that Achewood is good and frequent than it is that a person who signed a book for me once and was nice and pleasant while doing it but I don't know in any meaningful way is making the maximum amount of money off the work.
This is probably a terrible way to consume media, morally, I suppose.
-
I was a pretty consistent poster on Assetbar, the free version at least, and I am pretty sad to see it (most likely) go away forever and ever. A nice little community had been built up, more or less, and some extremely funny things were posted alongside madmens' screeds about _____.
I have no beef with the fan-flow, I just thought it was destined to not make that much money. It would reach a saturation point, everyone who wanted to pay for it would, and then just sort of bottom out. Then again, last time I thought about it, it (along with the main site) were being updated maybe once every week and a half--unless you count updates about what was soon to be updated. Things are moving more quickly now, at least that looks to be the case for the premium content. So the way I saw it, no one saw new Achewood content, therefore no one would pay for the premium service other than the initial subscribers. Not that we're all discussing the premium subscription...
Anyway, just pouring a block of text out for the loss of Assetbar, on the nearest and most related internet curb.
-
Damn this quandary. It would all be a lot simpler if the internet itself just sold t-shirts, with all revenues going to the internet. I would buy a several amount of such t-shirts and sleep well at night.
-
Well now I am very cross that there was a whole other forum of crazy people talking about Achewood and I missed it. I would have at least checked it out once in a while.
I guess I am fatally 20th Century but it is hard to imagine that the guy with the television show (sure, on late-night cable, but a television show) is the smaller celebrity than the dude with the online comic strip that updates twice a week if we're lucky.
A guy with a TV show had a shorter line than someone who has just published BOOKS? Hear hear.
The lines have been reported to be out the door for Onstad at all his signings. You could search this board for my story, where my friend, also a published author, insisted that NO ONE in NYC has a line for their book signing, and then when she showed up, wanted to cry.
We've had exactly this conversation before though, and it doesn't change LFM's mind that there is something wrong with Onstad's business model.
-
Well, a lot of people do webcomics as a hobby or as a supplemental income at best. I'd say that for the vast majority of people, it's a labour of love where the minor tee-shirt sales or ads or whatever MIGHT cover the webhosting costs, some art supplies and an extra couple of dinners-out a month and that's it.
Which still makes it commercial, only on a small scale. Let's try this again:
When you say you see no problem in people making a living off "commercial" art, then it follows that there must be another type of art that, I'm assuming, you would think it's not ok to make a living off. Otherwise, why make the distinction? This, and only this, is what I'm asking. Of course, if this is a topic you don't feel particularly interested in talking about, that's cool too, but for Nice Pete's sake, just be clear about it...
-
I had to stand in line at signings for both Terry Pratchett and Lewis Black. However neither of those were in NYC.
-
I don't give a shit about Onstad's business model. Since I am neither a family member of his nor a stockholder in his enterprise I do not stand to make a profit or suffer a loss either way. Obviously it is financially viable enough to allow him to adequately support his family. So I don't think the strip will be ending because he can't make a living at it -- he has been for years now.
I'm a lot more concerned that he's bored with Achewood and the webcomic format. What has he been producing lately? Fewer and fewer strips and more and more little essays, vignettes or character studies which show up in the fanflow. I think Achewood's in a lot more danger from Onstad's creative ennui than from a failure to generate revenue.
-
That's autrepoupee. I know her.
I know autrepoupee.

See, my concern is completely with Achewood too and... I see the causation not as some kind of writer's block but as... dude's concentrating on the material that people are paying money for, i.e. the vignettes essays character studies in the fanflow, and THAT'S why the strip is suffering. It's understandable, of course, but it's also completely ass-backwards to EITHER making the dude money long-term OR keeping the Achewood strip viable.
When the strips were the focus of the content and anything else was gravy was obviously when the strips were the dude's priority.
They're not. He got himself in a place where the strips are throwaway ads for the miscellany that he charges for and... it sucks.
wombat:
but... Tony Millionaire has produced many many books. and ALSO a teevee show. I dunno. I guess our culture, especially our cult culture, is changing fast.
deja:
there's art that you're trying to make primary income off of... and there's art that you're just putting out there for its own sake and if you happen to make money off it, that's gravy and just a side-effect of getting it distributed, but it's not your career/vocation/etc.
people who are doctors or teachers but they paint and put the paintings up in a local gallery just to get them seen, people who play in little bar bands on the weekends with comfortable day jobs, just making up the cost of equipment and travel and such, people who self-publish comics just to run the regional comic/sci-fi show circuits and have little adventures, etc.
when one becomes the other, either going up the ladder or going down the ladder, things get weird.
I'm sorry if my choice of terminology was imprecise but that particular semantic is kind of incidental to what I'm actually trying to say, hence not really focusing on it.
-
What has he been producing lately? Fewer and fewer strips and more and more little essays, vignettes or character studies which show up in the fanflow.
That sounds to me like he's preparing to write a screenplay.
-
I had to stand in line at signings for both Terry Pratchett and Lewis Black. However neither of those were in NYC.
There are lines for signings for all kinds of people all over the place, sure. The point was, NEW YORK. There is so much competition for events and so many famous people and so many writers that in my friend's neighborhood in Brooklyn, which was where the signing took place, everyone and their dog-walker has published a book. It's not easy to impress people enough to make them want to stand on a line.
What really made her want to cry was when she said "I want to know who is PR person is so I can hire them" and I told her that he didn't use a PR firm to get that long line.
Anyway, as far as his creative process or whatever, he's always been obviously someone who wanted to do other things in addition to a webcomic. For all we know, his time is going into some other project that we haven't seen yet, and like any artist who changes direction, some fans will follow and some won't. Or he may be taking a break and mostly mowing his brand new lawn with his brand new lawnmower like his Facebook posts suggest... but sometimes that's part of the creative process too so I am willing to have patience.
-
I'm sorry if my choice of terminology was imprecise.
I'm not sure I'd blame imprecision. Especially, also, with the addition of this other distinction: "intellectually":
I understand that the guy's gotta make a living and, intellectually, I am all for people figuring out how to make a living off of commerical art.
...it seems rather fastidiously precise, but hey. Is Phillipe still five?
-
when one becomes the other, either going up the ladder or going down the ladder, things get weird.
But many if not most creative people at least start out with a day job before they can make their art their career. This is a totally normally transition, what is weird about it? And what makes you think Onstad didn't start out with the hope of someday making a living?
LFM - and remember, I only yell because I care - why not quit the logical contortions and admit that your problem with Onstad charging money for his art is that you are envious.
-
See, my concern is completely with Achewood too and... I see the causation not as some kind of writer's block but as... dude's concentrating on the material that people are paying money for, i.e. the vignettes essays character studies in the fanflow, and THAT'S why the strip is suffering.
I don't think it's writer's block -- he's still producing. I just think he's getting to the point where he's done all he can with these characters and the only way to explore them further is through longer written pieces.
-

Or perhaps a feature film?
-
Paul! Shush with the movie! I don't want him to write a stupid movie, I want him to write a book.
-
If he writes a book half as funny as some of those old blog posts I'll buy 10 copies.
As it stands, I liked buying buying the old self-published personalized collections a lot more; however, I still buy the new collections (because I'm an OCD collector). One thing I do appreciate about his shirts is the fact that he does not print a URL anywhere on them. This makes them only partially nerdy, rather than full-on 100% nerdy.

Well, there's the problem with his model: suboptimal monetization of your torso.
-
Oh shit I really hope he stopped reading this board.

This seems to be the trend. I can't recall any shirts of mine with a URL on them other than some very old Diesel Sweeties shirt with clang.org on the left sleeve.

But many if not most creative people at least start out with a day job before they can make their art their career. This is a totally normally transition, what is weird about it? And what makes you think Onstad didn't start out with the hope of someday making a living?
Regardless of whether he planned to make a living off of it, and regardless of whether all artists go through this transition, it's still a phase where a lot of artists get screwed up and make bad moves that end with them getting screwed/unfamous/whatever.
A lot of the mid-80s punky/indie bands fell into this trap, where they signed to a major label too soon, dreaming of becoming big rock stars, only to find that America wasn't ready for weird punk-y grunge-y pop music for another 5 years at least.
Changed their sound, alienated their fans to some degree, never made the money they were promised.
At least, some of them now are making gads of money doing reunion tours. That's good. The ones who didn't die or lose their hearing or something.
Similar things going on right now with the Avett Brothers. Signed to a big label, put out a fancy slick album with minimal banjo and country harmonies and stuff... to me this is a bad move. Good for them if they are rolling in money, but I am no longer as interested in going to their concerts, because I am uninterested in seeing a piano-pop band. It is frustrating that a band that my friends used to go see in basements or churches now plays huge shows that I cannot afford tickets to. Am I glad for them, that they're making heaps of money after working so hard for a decade? Yes. I'm just sad that they had to abandon what I love them for to do it.
In the same way, Onstad is going all over the place with these different monetization schemes, and it's easy to say, hey, maybe the guy's getting distracted by this wacky pay-for-play system he's gotten worked out. Maybe he's tired of writing comics. Something's going on, at least.
And remember, on the internet, there is always someone ready to do what you're doing, but for free.
-
I don't know that much of it is jealousy, though I'm sure a little of it is, if only because... I have never seriously considered trying my hand at a web-comic.
Though I draw a little, I have no idea how to build a website, I have no computer-art skills with which to properly scan and edit a strip and (probably most importantly) I have no idea how to write for that format. I've tried to noodle with it and it's maddening. Just setting up one gag, knocking it out and moving on? That is basically the exact opposite of how I think creatively.
I have no problem with Onstad charging for his material. What I have a problem with is how counter-productive the current model seems to be for what he has proven to be best at. This giraffe-nor-fowl way of going about it serves no one in the long-term and in the short term, only Onstad.
Honestly, I'd pay... three to five dollars a month for two or three good strips a week.
Putting a lackluster effort into MAYBE two strips a week for free and pouring the balance of the effort into half-baked fanflow works doesn't do anyone any good, ultimately.
Not even Onstad, who'll eventually be stuck trying to publish collections of the sub-par giraffe-nor-fowl-effort strips somewhere down the line.
-
really, the biggest impact i can remember making in those days was that i was known as "the kid who will cry if you pick on him long enough".
Awww. I hope that wasn't a regular occurrence. At least you weren't known as "Weasel" (corruption of last name) or "the girl who brings snakes to class." Good times. ::)
-
I was "Walrus" for the same reason you were weasel. Plus I was short, foreign, liked to read, and bucktoothed. School was not my happy place.
-
I, for one, decry the demise of assetbar. It was truly a scintillating forum for people of all flavour of intellect. The ad hominem diatribes of gladi8orrex, the enviable and extraordinary literary achievements of spinynorman and hatstand_mcq, all were truly high points of my day. Are the days of thegoblins and fineoakstructure truly at an end? Will daidai ever rise from the dead? Will Doctor Manflesh Desire[sic] Anal Play Immediately? I hope so. I hope so with every fibre of my being, for assetbar was my akademe.
-
Oh my god we need a new forum for those folks to go and quick because otherwise they might wind up here!
Just kidding, we welcome you all.
-
End Assetbar/TOUAMB Apartheid Now!
-
Are we the Statue of Liberty for Onstad's wretched refuse? Ok, but everybody has to change their name when they enter here.
Completely embarrassed to admit I just got this joke four days after first reading it. NICELY PLAYED.

That's who I miss. Thegoblins. And cpnglyxnchos. I hope those two kids find love.

Can I still get worked up about Onstad's business model?
1. Make a great comic that updates every so often.
2. Stop producing new content.
3. Charge for a special place you can log in and not see the non produced new content?
Seems sound to me.

Click on "Discuss", and in the upper-right hand corner, you will see the familiar "Join/Login" icon. Click "Login", and AssetBar is back in business!
-
the "discuss" link for recent strips points to an invalid page. If you are logged in, then you get the error "invalid" if you are not logged in, and you click the invalid "discuss" link, after logging in your are redirected to the last 'valid' assetbar page. Once logged in, clicking "next" will not show the next comic, since as far as assetbar is concerned, there are no more recent valid pages. However you can click next from the achewood.com front page and it will show you the next strips, sans assetbar discussion since as far as assetbar is concerned, these strips don't exist yet.
basically what happened is that Onstad outsourced assetbar to a monkey on a keyboard who in turn outsourced it to maybe a chicken or a lizard or something who in turn outsourced it to Arachno-capitalist who is too busy sending PMs that say "Fuck You" to do his job right.
-
As far as achewood is concerned assetbar is a thing of the past.

The assbar comment feature is still down. Not just making new comments, but the entire history and evidence that commenting ever existed is gone. This is how it should be.
See, I don't get this. What's with the open hostility toward assetbar over here? I've spent a great amount of time there and I've lurked here semi-regularly. I've seen what both have to offer and I just can't get my mind around the prevalent air of superiority around here.
Listen. This is what's up: Assetbar is a party. A loud one. A sweaty one. With dancing. Yes, there are a few overly drunken, disagreeable sorts in the corners. Maybe a prostitute smoking crack in the upstairs bathroom. Maybe some goth bitch who won't put out her damn disgusting clove. But it's still a party. It's full of interesting people having a good time. Sometimes they may get a little carried away, but it's all in the spirit of celebration. It's a raucous good time.
OK, now I'm leaving the party which is assetbar and entering the adjoining room which is TOUAMB. It's quiet. It smells nice. There are a couple of dudes in cardigans sitting around a fireplace drinking Chianti from fine crystal goblets. They speak in even tones. They never interrupt one another. They nod politely and give a good-natured chuckle. No one's yelling. There are no fist fights. No wild-eyed revelers. In fact, there's....not much....of anything.
I get fidgety. This room is relaxing and calm, but before long I'm just sitting there wondering what's happening over at that crazy party I just left.
See what I'm saying? Safer and quieter doesn't mean better. Yes, assetbar has its problems, but it's an interesting place to be. For every one braindead troll there are ten not just funny, but seriously creatively gifted posters. Have you seen some of the photoshop work that's come out of that place? From what I've seen of this place it seems like the main topic of discussion is how this place is better than assetbar. Seriously, guys - I've skipped around a lot and I see this come up all the time.
I just don't get it. I like that this place exists and all, but why you gotta play it that way?
-
I think that these are all fair questions. Unfortunately I have no assetbar experience (I had an account there, but never used it much), or I'd pipe in with better input, but I just wanted to say that I find your description of TOUAMB hilarious - if it's accurate or not, I don't really care. But dialogue is always nice. As it seems that TOUAMB is getting some new members from assetbar, I can only encourage this type of frank approach. Also, welcome aboard.
-

It is a big world with plenty of room for different kinds of parties. It is good that the cardigan-wearing find each other, and that the raucous photoshoppers find each other too.
It's not Chianti, though, jeez.

Yeah, 'cause when we drink Chianti we are not afraid of the polizia.

We have hell of brandy snifters up in this bitch.

...Maybe a visit to the walk-in humidor for some of the second from the top shelf cigars, just for courtesy, 'course.
wow. those are way nicer than the assetbar cigars(some "re-engineered" swisher sweets that still have a hint of grape flavor).

I think we need some pussy shaving chat to put our new friends at ease. Linnea?

dejavroom: Thanks. Good to be here.
AugustWest: It doesn't bother me that you guys have your nice, little place and that you're happy with it. I think it's cool as shit. I kinda like it here. It's just this competitive vibe I get from a lot of the comments I've read that kind of gets my goat. The seemingly fairly regular need to assert that assetbar is inferior to this place. This whole "assbar" business. I guess I get kind of offended. I mean, we don't sit around and go on about how much better we are than you, ya know?
wombat: This is a good way to look at it. And what is that, courvoisier?
Asherdan: Hey, man - I am partyin'. Look at me. Look at me partying. And man, I know you have a....unique relationship with the 'bar. You've been kind of kicked around over there (whether or not it was justified I can't remember), so I'll never balk if I hear you bad-mouthin' the place. Anyway, I think I'm through bitching about people bitching about people. Just had to say my piece. Got a lot of friends over there. Gotta represent.
-
I still say the Infini-Tee (http://www.basicinstructions.net/?page_id=540) is better. And I totally want one.
-
Rowboat if this were a party I would want to be at the one with the drunks fuck*ng shit up and bitches dancing topless on the tables. But this is not a party it's a messageboard, I come here for conversation.
I have very limited experience with Assetbar, from back in it's early days and it seemed pretty bad to me. Nothing intelligent was said that I noticed. Perhaps it evolved over time into a place where some intelligent conversation can take place, but with a bunch of dickholes like Mr. Wonderful hanging around too.
As for the assbar thing. I started that. It stems from the fact that the first time I visited there I misread the name. I sincerely thought the name was assbar. But yeah I think assetbar is inferior to TOUAMB. Sorry about that.
-
it's okay, Paul. You are rad.
YOU. ARE. RAD.
-
what would be the equivalent of a knife fight on a messageboard? I think I would like to see that.
-
what would be the equivalent of a knife fight on a messageboard? I think I would like to see that.
A rap battle.
-
Assetbar was boring in its early days. And it still ebbs and flows. Has its good months and bad ones. One could even argue that it peaked a year or so back with The Great Handface Weekend (surely you know of it) and has been in decline since (I, myself, am not of this opinion, though many others are). There's pretty much a core group of posters who make it great. As long as a couple of them are around at a given time things are good and all the middle-of-the-road types feed off of it and follow suit. There aren't a bunch of dickholes like Mr. Wonderful hanging around, there is just one Mr. Wonderful with forty different accounts, most of which are auto-ignored by the site these days. Besides, the power of good, old manual ignore (scroll, scroll) is really underestimated.
Anyway, I'm not here to try to change the place. Just curious what all the hatin' was about.
-
You know that story too good, 'Dan. What exactly is the truth about you?
-
Row. Can I call you Row?
Row, there's always been an insular vibe here. The thought generally is, that everyone sucks until they prove themselves otherwise. New people come, get hazed a little bit, get their crotches sniffed, and either stay or leave.
That's pretty common to all message boards, and people on the internet in general. It runs a little thicker here, but... Row, have you SEEN the things people post on YouTube? Fark? Any television website that allows users to comment on news stories?
Just ignore it, say whee, and you'll go nice into the personality cult.
Good Luck, Row.

I think a lot of our insularity comes from the circumstances surrounding the foundation of this board as Dan alluded to in this post.
Speaking for myself, I've always tried to welcome newbies with open arms. Even Mr. Wonderful. I treated him with respect when he first got here even though he posted a whole lot of nonsense. Of course all that got me was called fat, but still, I tried.

Part of it is just a rivalry thing. Cheers vs. Gary's Olde Towne Tavern stuff.
Part of it is just a message board inside joke thing. Ha ha, assbar sucks.
But the biggest part, I think, is best illustrated by a hypothetical. Imagine assetbar stays gone. Your favorite posters form a replacement board, which, if not thrives, at least survives and has the occasional rewarding, insightful or humorous moment. A couple years go by and you have a tight community with its own culture, argot, newbies and departed saints. And then Onstad starts another new message board type thing. Mightn't you be a little wary of it? Mightn't you treat it with a modicum of disdain?
Also, you guys are all ugly and your Mamas dress you funny.

JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS AND GET THE SAND OUT OF YOUR pu$$y AND LETS TALK ABOUT SOME ACHEWOOD HERE
DID YOU SEE THAT ONE TIME THAT ROAST BEEF MUMBLED AND HIS WORD BUBBLE FONT WAS TWO POINTS SMALLER THAN THAT OF RAY AND TEODOR
I WONDER IF THAT SIZE DIFFERENCE IS GOING TO AFFECT HIS PERFORMANCE IN THE PLAYOFFS
-
Alls I can say is that... while I have not spent large amounts of times at the assbar... the times I have tried to read it, the level of discourse was preeeeeeetty much monkeys flinging their shit at each other. Now perhaps you might say "well, you didn't give it enough of a chance" to which I would say "yeah, well, my tolerance for shit-flinging is pretty low, I am not going to hang out to see if this is an acquired taste."
If the fecal smears on the walls occasionally form sentences and you derive joy from slowly painstakingly making out those patterns, man, I leave you to your joy. Me, I prefer to be a room that is not covered in monkey shit.
Clearly a small handful of people from there are rad and have rad conversations and that's awesome as far as it goes... but the outstanding majority of that place is an assbar and, y'know, just because you feel kneejerk loyalty to it as "the first place you went" doesn't undo that fact. The place is ass.
Consider: the extent of Touamb's aggression toward the assbar are occasional pithy snide comments that we keep on our own turf whereas the assbar's main emmissary to this neighborhood is a 12 year old boy who has seemingly spent ten hours a day for a week sending us e-mails about his c*ck.
In that light, a little bit of old-fashioned elitism does not seem too too outlandish.

I'm afraid I have to deduct a can from you for your tone.

I understand all of this. I'm getting the picture. I mean, I am an assetbarbarian and that's what I'll remain, but I see the source of your misguided (in my opinion) misgivings.
One thing, if the "12 year old boy" you're referring to is Mr. Wonderful, it is extremely unfair to consider him AB's main emissary to TOUAMB. We didn't send him. We don't even talk to him. It's unfortunate that he, in your minds, embodies the spirit of AB. That's just so not what we're about. I'm also aware that sje46 came over here a few times and, while he - unlike Mr. Wonderful - is an actual human being, he also isn't a suitable spokesperson.
Anyway, I think we've probably said all that needs to be said on this topic. I know I didn't change any minds, but that wasn't really what I set out to do. I'll be around. And if you feel the need to label someone an assetbar liaison or whatever, just make it me until someone better comes along. However he's represented himself, take my word for it that Mr. Wonderful has nothing to do with the place. He's no peanut in our turd.
