@achewood The bus is crossing Klickitat St., home of Ramona Quimby. It's pretty swank these days. No sign of Nosmo King.

Yeah... I actually enjoy weeding.  And the SO was in the back yard, excavating wheelbarrow full, after wheelbarrow full of limestone the entire time, so I was doing the easy work.

Try weeding in the climate I live in. 12 months a year of grass cutting, palm fronds, stupid panics that grow an inch a day lengthwise and widthwise, coconuts falling in the yard from a 35 foot tall tree and leaves.

You yard work lovers ought to move out here! You'll never be without something to do.

Hey, AD, do you worry about a coconut just beaning you on the head one day?  That is the sort of thing I would worry about.  I used to live right by a golf course, and with the amount of golf balls that ended up on our yard I was always just waiting for the day that I got hit with one.  Thankfully it never happened.

Today is a new day, I got up at 6 AM and went to the gym, ran for half an hour and did some weights.  I'm particularly interested in building bone mass - I've been told that women can't build bone mass after 30 - is that true?  I've been making sure to get the right amount of calcium, but also know that weight bearing exercise can build bone mass too.  Suggestions?

Also, does anyone have a good web resource for stretching?  I'm pretty sure I'm not doing enough of it, but I'm never sure about the proper technique.  (I tried yoga, but with all my joint issues, I wasn't able to do any of the moves.)

edit:  AD, I just spent an hour building my fit day journal (but I am not as brave a soul a ye' and hence will keep it private).  I could spend so much time there, it is scary.

I try not to obsess about Fitday. Generally I only update it durng the week. It's kind of a check for me more than anything - and it's kind if painful.

There are drugs out there intended to build bone mass for people (especially women) with densitometer readings indicating risk for breaks. Fosamax is one that comes to mind. Without drugs, building bone mass is possible (breaks do heal, although slower) but most regimens are intended for bone mass maintenance.

As for the coconuts - the real worry is one of the kids gets beaned by one. From that height it would probably be lethal. I'm going to have to call someone to trim it and get the nuts down. Or buy me some steeplejack gear and run up there.

Here is one computer-based fitness resource

Can't... help... myself...

Nobody deserved this. I'm sorry.

EDIT: Holy crap, I'm Lyle! I don't think anyone can say this was a bad use of a milestone post.

Smells-- regarding being hit by a golf ball.

This is the conversation the first time my Lady Friend came to my house.

"wow, you live by a golf course. do you get a lot of balls in your yard?"
"no, we never do. The way the golf course points, they're aiming in the opposite direction."
"oh. but isn't that one right there? *points.*"
"...oh. Yeah. Yes it is."

I swear to God we never get golf balls in our yard. Geez.

I struggled to make a joke about you not seeing balls, and needing a lady friend to point out balls to you, but I just can't come up with anything.  Sorry.

As for us, as a kid, we lived about 300 ft from the fence of a golf course, but somehow the balls always ended up on our yard.  I will always remember my dad cursing at some lawnmower vs golf ball incident.

I wanted to make a joke about him never seeing the balls because the yardman always takes care of that.  You know because tI likes to pretend that he's a working stiff when he's really from privlidge.  But I couldn't think of a way to do this and not have it sound jerky of me.

Of course you never see the balls tI, because you are sitting poolside sipping a mint julep while Pedro cleans them out of the yard.

Drinking a mint julep was on of the first things I did upon officially moving to the South. I had it with a meal that included collards and grits and peas and several types of pork products. Deeeeee-lish.

Ack - just realized I was contributing to a threadjack, so now for som on-topic stuff. After my constant illness and surgery, I'm now up to being able to walk several blocks without then needing to nap for a few hours. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to start running a tiny bit in the next couple of weeks. I've actually lost weight - sickness helps, though I'm having to actually eat three large-ish meals in order to keep my antibiotics down, which feels really weird to me. I just want to be back to normal.

And my anniversary party thing is in a month (since we eloped, we're having a 1st anniversary party for everybody to come & get drunk at), and I need to look beautiful and glowing and stuff, because those will be the pictures that I will be stuck looking at for all time, so I have about 5 pounds to go before I'll consent to be the awkward center of attention. I think I can do it.

They suck.

Have a mojito instead.  It's on the same plane of existence but better.
