Well, LFM. Looks like our trade went through. Let's hope it works out well for both of us. Is that the first blockbuster deal of the season?

I traded Ichiro for Utley with... somebody and... though Ichiro's numbers are slightly better in some aspects, I just had too many outfielders to fit all my various statistical needs, for better or for worse. I gotta fit in Pierre somewhere to... dick me over on average while I try in vain to get the SB point.

Your hitters are insane, mel. Good on ya. This is a very weird week in baseball.

I continue to try and strengthen myself at short and catcher off the bench but... I've gotten to a point where I'm kinda just where I am with my starters and to a large extent my pitchers and I gotta roll with it.

Yeah, the funny thing about my hitters is that this week's numbers have been buoyed by two guys I started the year with - Uggla and Sheffield - only to drop them and then pick them back up a few weeks down the road. Also, having John Smoltz decide he doesn't ever want to give up a run is nice.

Ryan Howard is due to return from the DL in a few days. That means that I'll need to start playing Sheffield in the OF, which means one of my new guys is getting the sack. I guess this is a good problem to have? I dunno. Howard wasn't really hitting lights out even when he was healthy. My team has done a lot better without him.

Yeah, oddly enough, I just picked Orlando Cabrera back up, myself and... I did the same thing with Glaus earlier in the season.

I think we're at the point in the season, now, where all the players are really... finding their level, we'll say and...

I think I'll be a bit more settled after that, barring monster slumps and/or injuries.

Right now, I'd only consider moving... my fourth and fifth starting pitchers, Marquis and Gorzelanny, and... two of my four bench guys, Kent and Green... and even that's mostly just because I'd like a third catcher or shortstop to complete the pilability of my roster. If I could have three options at every hitting position (with five outfield "options") that'd probably be the best of all worlds.

But there aren't many more solid starters (by the standards of an eight team fantasy league, of course) in the free agent pool and... simply "dropping" Kent or Green for the best shortstop or catcher on the FA list would weaken me at either OF or 2B.

So it's a weird balance. There's kind of not much more I can do at this point without... trading, you know?

And really, Green should be a pretty enticing offer, considering the dude's numbers  and 1B/OF eligibility.

I dunno. I could tinker with this forever, of course, I guess that's why it's so fun.

Man that guy has basically had the definitive uneven career. From the subl ime to the ridiculous, ridiculous, ridiculous.

Surely this belongs in the sublime column too.

Absolutely. I just looked at what I had and decided I had already gone overboard. I'm not good with moderation . . . but you all knew that.

Ahh, so you didn't even want Bobby Abreu then? This was just a way to circumvent the no-cut rule for Brandon Webb, just selling him for a bag of magic beans. Works for me. Bobby Abreu hasn't been a "home run threat" since 2004, and now that he plays for the Yankees he's not going to need to steal nearly as many bases as in years past. So now his only real threat is hitting for a high average, which at .236 after nearly 200 ABs... well, suffice it to say he's not too valuable right now.

As for Webb, you have to think that a high-K, high-groundball Cy Young winner won't post a 3.89 ERA for too long. That's what I'm hoping, at least. Not to get too stat geeky, but his expected fielding-independent ERA is less than .20 higher than last year. So there's always that.

Don't let me down, convoluted sabermetrics. Don't let me down.

Oh, I wanted Abreu as a bench option but... with Beckett still on the DL, I wanted one more start this week out of somebody to counter your good pitching this week so... I bit the bullet and just took the best starting pitcher I could find who was gonna start Sunday.

Granted, Abreu was probably my most likely guy to drop if and when I get Beckett back but... I wasn't just taking him as the fantasy league equiv of a salary dump. I thought he'd be a solid line-up filler on Mondays and Thursdays just on the merit of scoring runs from being on such a strong hitting team.

But your pitching dominance this week sorta forced my hand.

As for Webb... he probably is gonna improve but... he was consistently my least-effective starting pitcher and I couldn't just... release him so, yeah, I was probably gonna jump at nearly any offer that didn't mean giving anyone else up in the deal.

You know, I was thinking. Do you think real MLB general managers have a message board like this one where they cordially share strategy, vent frustration and humbly celebrate victory? I would pay good money to see that, especially the posts where Billy Beane talks about how pissed he is that his guys keep falling apart.

We're in the final day and things couldn't be any closer, 'Falls. The only stats that have been well and decided are RBIs and maybe Ks. This should be an interesting Sunday.

It appears you got me this week, 'Lack. Kudos.

The Webb deal seems to have bitten me on the ass this week but... I think in the long term, with Beckett coming back off the DL, it should suit me quite well.

I mean... that's why I've sucked the last couple of weeks, my pitching relied hard on Beckett.

It was a hard fought battle, but a close one. I only came away with +2 points.

Does anyone read The Dugout? It's sort of like an online comic / theoretical AIM chatroom about MLB players. Pretty great stuff. The newest one, "What Now Mr. Dork", is hilarious if only for the thought of Albert Belle using AIM.

Four of my players hit home runs as their only hits today.  Three of them were solo shots.

Dustin Pedroia is doing good, but it is bad having so many Red Sox on the same team.

I wish I had Hanley Ramirez.  He might not have the absolute best stats, but they are pretty good and I like having players I like in real life.

Also, whoever does that pitching thing is awesome, even if I don't know whether I like it or not.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's Hanley.

Actually, I shouldn't say that. Everyone on my roster besides King Felix is open for trades, if the right offer comes along.
