Today is my day off and I'm going to apply for a job and look for opportunities to apply for a job so I can move someplace where the median housing price isn't over 600,000 and the milk isn't $5 a gallon on sale.

And good luck, Dawg. I am sorry it is not working out between you and Hawaii.

I can totally sympathize. I bought a bottle of Scotch the other day. A 750mL bottle of J&B blended scotch cost me $52 in Alaska. The exact same bottle is $21 here. I also got sick of paying $6 for some eggs, and $12 for a pound of produce. At least in HI the produce has got to be cheap and good, yes?

High cost of living is teh suck.

I don't currently have access to a camera, but I'll show you some pic's next time I do.  They're both pretty cute for giraffe.

Whoa!

not exaggerations, either. This place would be great IF I could get a job that pays about 100K a year but it's not looking good.

By the way Dawg, it's really great to have you back posting semi-regularly.

today:

at 12 or so I was leaving Slint.
Then I played guitar for a bit, listened to CDs, etc
then I went to WXYC to help my friend Bryan do his radio show. From 3-6AM. They have so many rules... they are the most bullshit of college radio stations. It made me really mad.
then I went to sleep?
then I woke up at noon, tried to choke down some frosted flakes, and drove the 3 hours back to Charlotte.
then I watched some Arrested Development with my brother
and ate macaroni
then I slept for several hours, I am not sure how many
then I ate a hamburger
now I am going to go to the midnight distribution of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at a Barnes and Noble.

Today I was a pallbearer.

Guilty note: The white gloves made me feel like directing traffic.

A funeral? My condolences. :(

Also: you ain't gotta feel guilty about that. I bet everyone else was secretly thinking the same thing.

Dude, you were directing traffic.  That is what pallbearers do.  Hugs.

Hey, I didn't get gloves!

Then again, it was a pretty laid back affair. Or as laid back as it can be when Catholics are involved.

Last time I wore the gloves it was to carry an itty-bitty little casket, maybe 3' long with a very young child inside. This thread is taking me places I tried to forget about - this wasn't my child, or even the child of someone I knew well, which made it in some ways worse...I volunteered to help out with this funeral for people affiliated with my church because the family just didn't have a lot of people here. The church was full for the service, but aside from the parents and grandparents, the other pallbearers and the clergy, everyone else was a doctor, nurse, social worker, or other person who was involved in the care of this child for his short and fairly difficult life. That was the toughest funeral I've ever attended.

You can not look at a casket that size when you have small children and not ache from the deepest and most vulnerable part of you for the parents of the child. And you can not avoid putting yourself in the situation and therefore imagine of your children in there. You think you can't imagine, and then you can and it's worse than you thought until you realize it's real for them. And all you can do is say something lame to them. And no matter what it is you say, it sounds lame relative to the event. It's horrible.

Gah, AD. I can't imagine attending the funeral of a small child -- or, for that matter, even a relatively young person. My grandmother's death was somewhat unexpected, but she was still quite elderly, well into the age at which one subliminally expects people to start dying; the thought of people dying before that age is still a bit uncomfortable to me, probably because I'm transitioning into a fuller realization of the mortality of myself and those close to me. Very eerie.

But hey! Today I am not going to worry about mortality and go ride hosses!

That's the spirit, dude. Ride hosses proudly and without even the slightest philosophical thought.

When the fuck did I get so old??

I just got back from a hardcore show at a shitty Denver warehouse downtown. My friend Nick and I got 40s of shitty 3.2 beer and bottles of water. 90% of the audience was scrawny 18 year old kids in baggy shorts. The only other person who was probably older than us was some dude who was missing fingers and offered me a hit. Obviously I don't do that shit since I get pee tested as a medic. When he heard that he asked me if I could hook him up with some fentanyl. Uh, sorry dude. Anyway, Nick and I had to leave after 2 hours in the sauna-like heat of the warehouse. Man.

Anyway, I have to get up in like 5 hours to go out in the field and do a survey at a construction site. I do not envy the me in 5 hours hence. :(
