Yesterday, if I were psychic, I could have posted that I was going to attend a surprise baby shower orchestrated by my three closest friends and my sister-in-law.

Except, you know, the surprise part.

I'm never, ever going to believe Pedro when he tells me we're having family photos taken.  Ever again.  "My parents won this free photo sitting at church and they want all of us in it, we have to pick up my sister on the way."

I changed my clothes three times because I didn't want to look too pregnant.  I put on makeup, even.

My friend Heather -- the perennial party planner of the group -- told me she knew it had to be a surprise because I had already forbidden them from throwing me a party on account of I had a baby shower when Little P was born, and I didn't need anything.  They were all pretty good about it though, and mostly just bought me girly clothes (since I refuse to buy pink things when I have perfectly good blue ones sitting in boxes).

So, my friends are creeps.  But they're good creeps.

Those bastards. You want we should rough them up some?

Today I'm going to feel bad because my friend from 4th grade is coming home from Iraq next week, but I'll be in S. Carolina with the in-laws so I can't be there to meet him at the airport. Luckily he'll be home for a month before shipping back to Alaska to wait for potential reactivation.

JL, you should beat them up for forcing your future daughter to conform to the Pink Clothes rule.

at the same time, I guess this keeps you from having to constantly explain that no, it's not a cute little boy, it's a cute little baby girl. She just likes blue.

I read an intersting thing on the pink vs. blue cothing thing a while back. Apparently around the 20s pink was a very in colour for boys since it was seen as a toned down red and therefore strong and dramatic. Blue was softer and therefore girlier.

Yeah, see, I'm in a weird place about that.

I don't want her to be mistaken for a boy, because of girl power and stuff, and also it was embarrassing when P was little to have to tell people that my "pretty little girl" ...wasn't.  (He's dressed in all blue, and his shirt has a big picture of a dump truck on it.  Seriously, people, I can't be any clearer than this.)  I'm sure she'll be dressed towards the boy side more often than not, simply because that's what we have, mostly.  I pulled out all the stuff that actually had the word "boy" printed somewhere on it, but everything else is pretty much fair game.

At the same time, there are some cuuuute things out there for baby girls.  Plus, girl clothes are easier to find than boy clothes.  Last Easter, I was looking for a church outfit for P that didn't involve a sweater vest.  I went to Kohl's and they had FOUR RACKS of Easter dresses, and HALF A RACK of dressy clothes for boys.  And they were all hideous.  (At two and a half, I felt he was a little old for bunny-and-chicky appliqués.)  So he ended up wearing khakis and a button-up shirt from Old Navy.  And a diagonal-striped clip-on tie.  Finding just a basic outfit such as you would put on an actual man is pretty difficult.  But you have options for little girls.  Especially before they hit the age of 8, and all of a sudden all the clothes get slutty and you can't find anything without glitter.

So I'm torn between my post-feminist desire to reject traditional gender stereotypes, and my progesterone-induced need to purchase very small articles of clothing with ruffles, ribbons, and screen-printed bunnies.

It's a challenge.  I'm leaning towards red, purple, and turquoise, mostly, to convey femininity without the diva-princess connotation of pink.  Although the wrap top and ##### I am planning to knit for her trip home from the hospital will be pink and purple, I'm probably going to use the deep eggplant shade for the main color and the warm petal pink for the trim.

And I think this post proves that I have spent waaaaaaaaay too much time considering this.

I can't speak for ruffles and ribbons, but there is nothing wrong with bunnies.

My duaghter's still well short of 8 - but there is slutware a-plenty for the 5 year old if you're so inclined.  (I'm not, and am delighted in her fashion sense which usually includes t-shirts and jeans).  One thing I have learned to accept gracefully is glitter.  My clever wife is into scrapbooking (which apparently requires generous usage of glitter) and my daughter likes to apply it to herself, her hair, her stuffed animals, the dog - whatever.  Inevitably this gets transferred to me, which leads me to find my face (specifically my hairline) subtly shimmering at me in the mirror as I check my teeth for food before a meeting.

Tonight I'm gonna party because I finished my last test for the year.  Now, no concrete classes for over a year.

We were pretty happy, actually, with the clothes at Target this past summer for our girls. A key for us is to buy the tops bigger so they actually cover the midriff. Finding non-lowrise jeans is challenging, and I personally can't get into the muffin-top look for anyone, let alone girls under 14.

At least the school she starts in January will have uniforms. That will help things immensely.

Heh, that is an almost unbearably cute mental image of all the glitter.

finish this damn psych paper, and then be free. Hopefully I will finish it before I need to leave to catch my flight home. I am kind of worried at this point.
Right now, my dilemma is this: it is snowing pretty heavily outside. I don't want to take the metro. I don't want to pay for a cab. My friend offered to drive me. Am I putting her at risk by accepting her offer? I asked if she was OK to drive in the snow, and she said "yes" and said that she is used to it because she is from the northeast and is used to driving in snow. Still, though, I feel anxious. I have never driven in the snow, and so I do not really have any way to judge.

In other news, googling my dad and the company at which he works brings up a ton of stuff about insider trading, and I nearly pissed myself. Then I read one, and it ends up that some jackass with out last name, and his first name as his middle name, is getting prosecuted at some other company.
I did find one thing where he was quoted, though, and it was kind of weird.

Once I opened an egg, and although it had no smell, its whites were green-tinged. I threw it away immediately.

They were delicious.

Today I had a party where the cops came twice.  The second time they wrote me a disturbing the peace ticket.  My roommate is convinced it is because he is black and has had parties there before.  Both times the police were there I asked them why they were there, as the party was still going on and you could not here anything on my front porch.  The second time they said, as they wrote me a ticket, that they could hear it 50 ft. away.  I said where is the noise, we are on the front porch.  They said they could here it from the street outside my house.  I said that is not 50 ft. away.  They said sign the ticket or go to jail... can I fight this, given that they said the law says that to be in violation you must be heard from 50 ft away, and they said they could hear me from a distance that is not 50 ft. away.  Also, if you get a city violation and are leaving the city in less than a week and leaving the state within months, will that follow you?  Also, can I fight this? Also, I got drunk as shit and partied hard and I have no idea how I can type.  And I am sorry.
