I just, like...
every time I go into a CD or Record store, I go check the F's to see if they have it. I have talked many times to people at the radio station about what a shame it is that we don't have this album. And I was looking through a big bin of stuff I'd been meaning to look through all year, only to find one of 2 most wanted albums of all time.
The best part is, at first I was just looking at the back of the album because it looked cool, and then I recognized the song titles...

and then I turned it over to see this (which apparently was a big influence on this) staring back at me.
So, yeah, I lost it and jumped around and yelled and made these guys listen to a few choice tracks with me.

The other day, I found a record in the radio station that I've been looking for since I was a sophomore in high school. It was in a bin of records to be thrown out, I don't know why. It was Crazy Rhythms by the Feelies, which I have described to people as "what I would sound like if I were a really brilliant band" or something to that effect. The CD is out of print and has been forever... apparently record stores typically charge hell of money for a copy. I have it on my computer, but, that isn't the same. When I found it I screamed in a really embarassing way.

Listening to it, I realized that I really want their distortion sound, and yesterday I saw a band whose guitarist had the same kind of sound-- I asked him what kind of overdrive he uses, he told me, and now I know what I want to buy once I've worked all summer (although maybe I will buy a cheap drumset instead, as I've always wanted to learn basic drum stuff.)

I will join with Dan, my brother North Carolinian, in appreciating "Crazy Rhythms."  Did you find a copy that has "Paint It Black" tacked on to the end?

The Feelies' "Only Life" (1988) pretty much got me through my last couple of years at college.  The Feelies, Vonnegut and Bob and Ray.  And cheap frozen pizzas you could buy for, like, 50 cents each.  That, and desperate hope.

Where in North Carolina are you from, idiom?

Today I'm gonna wish the planet a happy belated Earth Day by walking to the local farmer's market (.3 mi from my house) and purchasing locally-grown strawberries and sweet potatoes.  The sweet potatoes will be baked, blended, and frozen in ice cube trays, and will most likely be my daughter's first vegetable.  Yummy!

Also, Today I'm gonna log in and wonder where the hell everyone is today.  Seriously.  What the hell?

Tomorrow, I'm gonna talk to a group of third-graders about autism as part of Autism Awareness Month.

Says you.

Seriously, my son ate everything we threw at him until we hit stage 3 foods.  Bananas, blueberries, papaya, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, broccoli, you name it.  As soon as he got his first taste of pasta, he spit it the hell out.  Now we have trouble getting him to eat...everything.  No cooked pasta, no vegetables, no cheese, no meat.  It's problematic.

We just got a referral for a therapist to help with this, we're dealing with it.  But...just because your kid takes something in puree form doesn't mean s/he's going to like it in its solid form, and it's not my fault as a parent for not "making" him eat his vegetables -- he would literally starve himself if we took away his preferred foods, because he's just that sensitive.  He gagged at the very sight of a piece of cheese last week.

Sorry.  I'm so frustrated with his eating (and with people telling me I need to "make him" eat properly) that I get kind of bristly when people whose kids just love vegetables talk as if they had something to do with it.  I mean, offering your child healthy alternatives is common sense, but the truth of it is that most kids can tolerate a wide variety of foods, so even if they reject one particular fruit or vegetable, it's not a big loss.  My kid rejects whole *categories* of food, and it's not for lack of effort on our part.  And yet random strangers in restaurants seem compelled to offer unsolicited advice on how they got their kids to eat all kinds of crazy things ("just offer him the same plate at every meal until he eats it, he'll get hungry eventually), or suggest foods seemingly at random ("have you tried grilled cheese sandwiches?"), as if we haven't tried every potential food item a dozen times already.

So if this comes across as hostile...sorry.  I'm glad it's that easy for most people, but it's really not so simple for us.

Out of pure and slightly morbid curiousity, what does he eat? It sounds like your down to oreos, breakfast cereals and the box they come in.

Today, I'm gonna be around to post all you want because I decided work isn't busy enough to warrant me going in feeling sick again this week. Laptop in bed Hoo-Rah!

I was one of those smug types until pretty recently when my daughter, previously on the see-food diet, started rejecting stuff that she had previously shown no antipathy towards.  She's on a fruit, french fry, broccoli and quesadilla diet at the moment apparently.  Fortunately she does eat just about anything when she gets hungry enough, but that is usually at a time when the "kitchen is closed" and heat butting ensues.
Last week she told me about a friend at school who gets her crusts cut off her sandwiches.  I was willing to go to the mattresses over that one, but other than the news report nothing seems to have developed from it.

Today I got blood drawn to see if I have any chicken pox antibodies. I've never had it but I've been crazy exposed. So if the test comes up negative then I have to get the vaccine, if it's positive then I was apparently born immune.

my mom constantly tells my brother and I that it makes her feel like a bad parent that we don't eat more healthily/greater variety of foods. I have always been like this, and I am improving as I realize that, like, green things taste good, etc. Also once I reached a certain age I realized that it kind of makes me look like a little kid when I, say, avoid eating the carrots in my soup. It is amazing what a good motivator "i don't want to look immature in front of this cute girl" is.

What I am saying is, JL, as a picky person myself I KNOW you can't just make him eat the foods he doesn't want to eat. It will get better with time, just keep being the balanced and wonderful mom I know you are and things should get better. (I mean as in balanced between understanding that he doesn't want to eat these things and encouraging him to eat them, etc)

Huh. Well, the hell with it, I'm still not going to eat them.

That incident caused so many problems with my Psychology.

augie-- the steam tunnels are still hell of awesome. But confusing. We couldn't figure out how to really get anyplace-- at one point we got to a dead end with a locked door, though?

dripping near-steam water, and the tunnels had 2 inches of standing water in them in a lot of places. My shoes are basically destroyed, as are my #####.
for the first time ever, though, i was the guy saying "are you kidding me? we can't go back now! keep going!" and taking the lead.
At one point the steam pipes all started creaking and rattling and I thought we were going to get boiled alive? That part was creepy.

now we just need to figure out how to get anywhere. the chapel? business school? We were reluctant to squeeze through anyplace too small as we had some tall/bigger guys with us, otherwise I would have pressed on I think.

This sounds like the kind of situation wherein you realize that the necklace your grandpa gave you in his will is actually a treasure map that will guide you through the steam-tunnels if you hold it at the proper angle at noon.

Or, alternately, a story of sexual awakening amoungst a group of feral children who had no adults from whom to model their carnal expressions.

Either would make a good semi-autobiographical graphic novel ten years down the road but... the film adaptation of the former probably has more, y'know, crossover appeal.
