There was another thread where we talked about people who were bitter about their jobs and I said that these weren't always people who worked at McDonald's all their lives, they were often people who had fancy jobs they had gone to a lot of school for. I think a good way to end up like that is to go to law school because A, your parents suggest it and B, you are afraid you will screw up at something more interesting.

I think that if you are someone who is sort of afraid of the awesome responsibility of educating children, you are exactly the sort of person who should be doing it. Where I do see a little problem though is with the drug thing, which might be OK as a leisure activity in a lot of professions but not so much as a teacher.

i guess i am worried that if i don't have what it takes and i would feel like a piece of shit.

I have had some experience in teaching kids (basic computer stuff), and I always liked it. Little fuckers were rad, it was always more fun than teaching adults. I have this thing where I think that one of these days I'll try my hand at teaching a bunch of poor small kids how to read, try some ideas I have on them.

If you feel that inclination in you, maybe a nice approach would be to compare yourself to some notorious fuckpot (or more than one, really) that you know and that is in teaching. You could think of those bad examples and say to yourself in the mirror "I'm objectively better than that fuckpot. Kids that I would be teaching at least would not have to suffer that particular fuckpottery"). I don't know, I just woke up.

Where I do see a little problem though is with the drug thing, which might be OK as a leisure activity in a lot of professions but not so much as a teacher.

based on my job which involved teaching, but was not at all "being a teacher" (working at summer camp and teaching kids activities and stuff)... teaching kids is awesome. Kids are awesome. Do you like being around kids? I love kids. I think that there are definitely people out there teaching who seem not to like kids. Just think to yourself: do I like kids? I like kids. I like kids more than those jerks who don't like kids.

Whiskey makes my stomach unhappy. Ugh.
Also: have you ever done something that was probably really stupid, but when you wake up in the morning you can only laugh at how stupid it was?
I guess that means it wasn't so bad?

edit: becoming less funny.

i guess i am worried that if i don't have what it takes and i would feel like a piece of shit.  that is the main holdup if we're honest.

Give it a shot anyway. Hey, I dropped out of grad school (M. Arch) and unlike Matt Groening's "Life in Hell" strip, I am not the bitterest person in the world. Yeah it sucks that I spent all that money, but at least I figured out that I did not want to do that for the rest of my life.

It is better to try something and decide it's not for you, for whatever reason, than to spend the rest of your life regretting not doing it.

There is no reason to feel like a piece of shit if you're not good at being a teacher. Everyone is good at some things and bad at some things, it is no big deal. And God knows there is nothing uncommon about being a bad teacher, as one moment's reflection on your own education will no doubt reveal.  You would be doing everyone a favor if you were figured out you were bad and quit, so there'd be no shame in quitting.

I don't see a downside to trying it. You can always go to law school later.

About law school.  Go if you want to go.  Go if you think it would be really cool to be a lawyer or because you think you could learn some cool stuff.  Don't go if neither of those conditions apply.

Same thing with teaching, really.  Do it only if you really want to do it.

You have the gift of freedom at this point in your life.  You can pick what you want to spend your time doing.  So why not pick something you really like?  Then go for it, HARD.

be a Designated Driver for the first time.

Conclusion: Driving in the rain at 2 AM in St Louis where the roads are shitty (it is very possible that what is actually true is "Charlotte roads are wide and well-marked and well-lit and nowhere else is like that") with drunk people yelling at me makes me want to die.

When I was trying to parallel park I screamed "EVERYONE GET THE FUCK OUT, I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN"
Sometimes when I am mad I try to be funny by overstating how mad I am, but like, that is stupid, no one realizes that I'm not just flipping my shit.

the party we went to was fun, though. And on the way home I was less stressed, because it had stopped raining, and I just yelled and drowned people out with loud rock music.
Hey, all in all, my friend got laid, we all danced like assholes to loud music in a small house, and everyone thought I was SUPER smart because I was not incredibly drunk like they were.

...go visit NASA's Ames research facility in Mountain View.  Once a quarter or so, my research team takes most of a day to go play together (our last trip was to a goat farm).  The last time I visited NASA's campus was in high school, so I'm looking forward to seeing what's changed in 20 years.  Later, my boy and I will have an evening together because my wife and daughter are going to see Miley Cyrus perform.  My daughter is beside herself with excitement - it took her until 9pm to fall asleep last night.

I used to live just a couple of blocks from there. I lived in the military housing when they closed the Naval Air Station. It was a cool place to be a teenager, and the Ames faciltiies are pretty cool.

Today I finally had my long-overdue birthday dinner. For some reason it took like 40 minutes to figure out the bill. We were like $70 off somehow.

I'm getting the wife close to buying me a small caliber rifle for Xmas/birthday/anniversary.  She knows how much I enjoy shooting my Krag, but at $1.15 a round its not something I get to do that often.

Why shoot offhand?  Just for kicks?

...take part in an unlit cyclocross race after dusk.

It'll be my first full on race.  I've been training since last November for it.   I'm pretty psyched.
