On the one hand, "self-employed" generally means no paid time off so you feel like you should always be working, and if she works at home, what I find is that means is, there is never any going home from work.

On the other hand that is such a fuck*ng irritating status update that I take back the first part of this post.

Yeah, except she doesn't work at home, she owns a board game shop, and I know for a fact that she gives herself most evenings off, and a sizeable percentage of weekends, as well. Maybe the second pug she just adopted is running her ragged?

I am trying to give her the benefit of the doubt because I like her as a person, and that is a truly whinybitchdiva status from where I'm standing. But sorry, my knee-jerk reaction is, "your dogs do not require as much of your time as my spouse and children, if you are in need of personal time, it's your own damn fault."

Still.

It must be a hip neighborhood where someone can have a store that more-or-less only sells board games and it stays in business for longer than two weeks.

Pugs! Well, that explains everything.

Small business actually seems to be worse than working at home - the person who owns the shop I work for gets hardly any time off, and there's plenty of work she can do from home. From what I can tell her business seems to take up as much time as a spouse and children. I used to have this idea of retiring to the beach and buying the dog boutique there, but from what I am seeing that no longer sounds like retirement.

But that's still a fuck*ng annoying status update.

Yeah, it's actually pretty rockin'. We have a handful of shops around, I get the impression Viv makes 90% of her money of 10% of her clientele -- the Magic/Warhammer/Roleplaying crowd that comes to the tournaments the store regularly hosts.

My local game shop gives you 2 hours of free table time for each $20 you spend. It seems to be a pretty good business model.

Our shop gives you as much free table time as you want, as long as there's space, and Roleplayers/boardgamers/CTCGamers have priority on their designated nights. They also have a game library so you can "try before you buy." It's pretty cool.

I would love to just sit down in the middle of a bunch of people playing Dungeons and Dragons and just... plop down some Clue.

Just get three friends and play a REALLY obnoxious game of Clue.

Fuck, not even Clue. Like one of the weird Clue spin-offs.

Clue: Great Museum Caper.

I bet THAT would -3 the HELL out of their charisma.

You're advocating some kind of passive aggressive nerd protest?

I am never not advocating passive-aggressive nerd protest.

Given infinite money and time, I would do an infinite amount of strange windmill tiliting.

It is my thing. It SHOULD be my thing.

Willie Mays was born to play baseball, it was the thing he would be best at in the universe and happily, baseball existed for him to be great at.

I was born for complicated absurd gestures against things. Except that ain't a sport at all and most people don't get it anyway.

I agree with Pmc9's sentiment

I've never been to a baseball game but I remember one time going to a movie - probably the last movie I ever went to - about a decade ago - it was in some nothing midwestern town, and the movie is over, and the credits are rolling, and everyone files out, except me, because I like to watch the credits in movies, and the usher kids come in and start sweeping up the popcorn and stuff, which I found to be intrusive upon my movie watching experience, even though it was just the credits.

I'm a very sensitive guy, I guess.  meanwhile, all of the society around me has no attention span and is hyped up on 5 different drugs... corn syrup, etc.  it's a weird and strange culture, dude, and I don't fit in.

I just made an Mp3 of a tape of interviews of foreigners who moved to the U.S., on the subject of their impressions of American culture.  Some day I'll upload that for y'all, but for now I'm kind of too frazzled and busy with stuff.  like digitizing an entire box full of tapes.  A big box.

You're frazzled? Try cutting out corn syrup.

it's harder to do than you think... they're even putting the stuff in bread man.  bread.  think about it.  If they're putting corn syrup in friggin bread, what's to stop them from putting it in the water too.  Or god knows what else.

Well, you know what they say about it?

Speaking of which how far is too far for a parody to go? Cross dressing, midgets and genital mutilation? Maybe.

the guy I know who works at a store that hosts Magic tournaments says they make insane amounts of money off of those tournaments.

in other news, today I leave for beautiful Chicago, Illinois. Or, I guess, Wheaton. I will pack, go to a job interview for a job I am dreading getting (?), pick up my friends when they get off work, and RIDE, BABY, RIDE. See my lady after a few weeks of not seeing her, see tons of fun bands, eat at a sandwich place I love, etc. YEAH.
