"Artists need to make money to eat and to continue to make art. Artists used to rely on middlemen to collect their money on their behalf, thereby rendering themselves innocent of cash-handling in the public eye. Artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks. Please welcome them. Please help them. Please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money.” -Amanda Palmer

This is where we are miscommunicating.

That must be it brochachochicomundo.

If you must focus your ire on an governmental employee, the teacher looks a lot more culpable to me.

And to add another point to all this, social workers are tasked with working to build the safty and well being of families, and going to the parent before all else is the norm.  In some ways, social workers act as "family health" cops, which means investigating the source of the concern first, not indirect witnesses.

Why do you assume I'm so fuck*ng dense I think the worker needs to start a federal case?

Same reason you think I'm so fuck*ng dense I think the worker doesn't need to talk to the teacher first.

OK, boys, keep your ##### on. There's no need to fight about this.

August, you seem to think Teach called SW re: Girlface. That's not so. SW was checking up on another child, noticed that Girlface's ##### were too small, and apparently got my info from the office and called me. I talked to Teach today and confirmed my suspicion -- the SW asked about her ill-fitting clothes in passing and Teach was in the middle of something else and blew her off because she couldn't figure out why SW would notice or care. So, score a point for Wombat on her instincts there.

For the record, I suspected that might be the case, but the SW made it sound (to me) like there was a conversation, not a one-off question and a non-answer from a busy special ed teacher. Teach called me about something unrelated (to let me know that the bus was going to be 40 minutes late arriving at the school and not to worry that Girlface wasn't home yet) and I took the opportunity to ask if she had five minutes to discuss something. She was shocked that SW called me without following up at school first. She said, "Obviously if I'd had time to fully process what she was asking I would have said that Girlface is usually more covered up than that and that it's not a sign of some major problem at home."

Teach was actually apologetic for SW having called. She said that "She gets a little overzealous sometimes. I've told her not to come anywhere near my class before 10 AM, and there were five adults in the room while I was trying to help a new student transition into his first day. It was rough, and all the coming and going made me want to scream. I finally told Assistant, if that door opens one more time I am going to lock it."

I told her I am glad that they have a SW who is that observant and willing to jump in and offer services, but I just wanted Teach to know in case SW follows up with her. So she said if she saw SW she would have a chat with her and let her know that everything is fine. I also was able to slip into the conversation how excited I am that this boutique clothing line that fits Girlface better than anything else is having a big sale next week and I'm planning on buying her a whole new wardrobe there. So that in case the SW expresses further concern Teach can give her a concrete plan of action that I am going to take to ensure that my daughter is attired more appropriately in the future.

Except that she's going to look like she's wearing the world's smallest maternity clothes, of course. Nothing but tunic tops as far as the eye can see.

So. Situation resolved. Thanks so much for all your support. It really helped, much more so than anything else that happened all day yesterday.

Also, Smells, yes, you can pass my info on to your friend. I am curious to see how custom clothes would fit her. I'll try to get some updated measurements while she's sleeping (she's too wiggly otherwise; I have had to take measurements for some knitted dresses and it's impossible while she's awake) and send them to you in a PM. You can tell her that I can do some basic sewing, so if she leaves a long turn-in and bastes the cuff, I can let them out later as she gets taller so she can get more wear out of them. That's what I've been doing with the off-the-rack ##### that I've been hemming for her. Her waist is staying close to the same size; at this point she's getting taller at an alarming rate, which has actually made her much easier to fit than she used to be.

Thanks, guys. Now we can for real put this behind us.

That's hilarious.  I suspected you'd have to measure her in her sleep, but imagining you doing so is extra cute.  I'll talk to my friend and find out what she needs measurement wise and let her know about the hemming (she has a surger and a regulaur machine so it's good you let me know this).  Also let me know any colour and fabric preferences.  I reallly look forward to going shopping for some cool fabric.

As much as I am enjoying the interplay between some of the commenters, I'm going to introduce a new subject. Today we had a blowout up here at an exploration well.

My GF is going to hear in the next day or so whether she got a job she applied to. Yesterday morning she told me that if she doesn't get it, she's going to move back in with her parents (in the suburbs of Chicago). Her mom runs her own business and needs a new associate. Boo to this.

Today I'm gonna upload a new sig quote to my profile, notice my "location," and remember that when I set it last, my idea was to adopt "Danger" and "Chaos" as handles for my kids. Will it confuse people if I switch over from Boyface to Danger and Girlface to Chaos? On my mommy blog (which, shit, I really should update sometime) they are Kitten and Boo.

I'm just not thrilled with Boyface and Girlface, but if you guys are used it it I can stick. They're just not quite as catchy and distinctive as "Asherbaby" and "The Technical Staff" and "Mrs|Choop" and so on.

This is the real non-Facebook internet, the imaginary friends are allowed to change names whenever they want.

I'm cool with the new handles as long as I'm clear on which one is which. I'm slowly transitioning to using "the missus" but I also like "herself". I don't know. I call her "Sugarbritches" to her face, but that seems a little familiar in this milieu.

If you use Herself, you need to Capitalize it.

Boy is Danger, girl is Chaos. It should be obvious from context which is which, since their gender pronouns are different. And, I mean, those handles aren't from nowhere. I think they capture their personalities pretty well. I could go with Dangerboy and Chaos Girl for a transition period, if that helps. Am I over-thinking this? Did I have too much caffeine today? Yes, yes. Indeed.

In other news, I'm not seeing profile locations in the left-hand column any more. Are they still showing up for everyone else? Or were they never there and I'm just misremembering seeing Wombles listed as being at "a home for scared people?"

Yes, you are overthinking this and there used to be locations and they seem to be gone. I definitely didn't take that out of my profile.

Do what you do and we'll adapt on the fly.

Today I realized that a lifetime of not being a morning beverage person has ended. Used to be, I'd get up and drink a pint of water and hit the day. Now, I get to work and while the machinery is spinning up I head for the in-house coffee bar with my boat mug.

If they don't have my Earl Grey and I got to go all black oolong on things I am pissed.

Goddammit, I'm going to have to punch my tea snob self in the face every day now.

I'm more of a jasmine green type of guy.

General Foods International Coffees. Pumpkin Spice Latte, when it's in season. Suisse Mocha at other times. Pretty much the opposite of a coffee snob -- it's basically like caffeinated instant hot chocolate mix. And I'm real damn cranky without it.
