It's the college's gym.  They had a teepee set up outside, but the forecast called for rain, so all the graduation festivities took place inside.

Had an awesome weekend, capped off with a mediocre day at work. Got off, rode my bike to a friend's, and then rode 3 miles to get milkshakes and burgers. Then back. Kind of made everything feel a lot better.

I am a cheapskate, so for cold I just use a bag of cheap-ass frozen peas or a gallon-size freezer bag filled with ice, wrapped in a kitchen towel with a rubber band on each end so it looks like a Christmas cracker. For heat, I fill an old tube sock with dry rice and tie off the cuff, then nuke it in the microwave for about a minute and a half -- it stays warm for an hour or more. I alternate 20 minutes of cold, then take a ten-minute break, then twenty minutes of hot, lather/rinse, repeat as needed.

The rice in the tube sock is genius, by the way. Thanks for that.

Sometimes I use ball bearings in tube socks but I don't think rice would deliver the goods.

Today I am going to think about eating a donut.  I guess I could probably find a vegan donut in Denver (?), but I don't think I care.  I really want one of those blueberry cake donuts.  I have been so bored recently and have, for some reason, and you all are a big part of it, been craving one of those donuts but I would still be vegan even if I ate it once.  Ah, I will not eat it, but I will think about it randomly for at least a few weeks.

Also, MRI Wed, should know results Fri or Mon, depending on if this doc at the urgent care place is working or off on Friday.  Pretty exciting times!  Also, by then I should hopefully have my low cost primary care physician who can get me to a proper back specialist I will pay $25 to see!

Oh, and I found out today I may or may not have my old job, like the definitely hired someone, but maybe or maybe not will bring me back.  They really like me and will try I am sure.  Either way I am alright with it, but it would be nice to start making money again when can ASAP.  Also, yesterday it started feeling better, but today I can totally walk, do stuff, not just lay in bed yelling in pain.  I am not going to do a lot, or else I will be laying in bed screaming in pain soon!

That's always the hard thing for me, figuring out how to do enough physically that the muscles loosen up and stuff, but not so much that I re-injure it. But I've found that lying around only makes it worse -- at least, for the kind of pain I have, the muscles tighten up overnight while I'm sleeping and it takes me half a day to get it to the point where I can walk again.

Yeah, I cleaned dishes and vacuumed (my mom has since told me this is the worst thing you can do with a bad back, but we only have one carpeted room) and swept, then I had the worst pain of my life for 2.5 days, so, yeah, I'll just lay about and wait for the MRI, as long as I don't notice pain from laying about.

Doing some light research hoping to get this interview now that I turned in my application, I found an article I had read before which is blowing my mind. Not the main content, something it mentions almost in passing. There is this style of house in some parts of the city called a Flounder House. They are generally 120-150 years old.

-until somewhat recently, no one knew where this style of building originated. the article (by my buddy!) just mentions "southern european architecture."
-they occur in several cities across the US, but nobody is sure why they do not occur in certain cities with similar immigrant mixes to the cities where they do occur
-St Louis has/had hundreds of them, and nobody is sure why there are so many here.

It is so incredible to me, having grown up in the era of the internet, that there are things that happened ~100 years ago of which there is little to no historical record. Thinking about this led me to the wikipedia page for the 1904 World's Fair in St Louis. There are all sorts of claims about things having been invented/introduced at the fair, including ones that Wikipedia considers "dubious" but apparently can't rule out.

That is cool. I don't think I have ever seen a house like that.

That reminds me I was looking for an excuse to post this fun piece about archives, and this seems as good an excuse as is likely to come up.

Giraffes spend too much time doing bench and not getting squats into the mix.  Probably they spend their lower-body workouts doing such as leg extensions and calf raises.

My new band name is Giraffe Squats.

Would also work as the name of a sex act. A porn move, if you will.
