I had a rant about cursive about a month ago. A woman at work was showing how well her daughter was doing writing cursive at school. I went on a tirade about 'who the hell uses cursive?' I then went around the office trying to find someone who actually uses it regularly. I tired myself out before I found someone... So being the contrary person I am, I then proceeded to write EVERYTHING in cursive for a week.  Yeah, that got old...

In elementary school I had a teacher who would give me a B- in handwriting. She said it was just so I could be on the honor roll. "You certainly didn't earn it."

Hey, let's bitch about D'Nealian some, too. At my mom's school they don't even teach printing any more. First and second graders start with D'Nealian and go to cursive from there. Supposedly if you skip printing and go straight to D'Nealian then to cursive it makes the transition to cursive easier. But most kids already have rudimentary printing skills that they learned at home, which just means that this is an extra step towards learning a form of writing that's pointless to begin with. My mom isn't allowed to teach regular printing. I guess kids are supposed to learn it from looking at Times New Roman all the time out in the real world.

Fact: If you want to learn Russian, you must learn to write in cursive. They do not print anything by hand.

yeah, um, my handwriting is horrific. I have memories of being in elementary school, and just stuffing the Cursive Worksheets in the back of the desk and hoping my teacher never noticed.
She never did, and then I moved to a new school where they made me learn it.

Um, D'Nealian? I feel like this looks how i write my letters. I remember being weirdly upset when I learned that what I called Print was not actually print.

also: one of my friend's older brothers had such bad handwriting as a kid that they thought he was Developmentally Challenged. He had to go through all kinds of tests and stuff.

the way she tells this story makes it sound much more dramatic, because she says "they thought he was retarded." In truth, I too had to go all sorts of crazy tests and shit because they thought my horrible handwriting was indicative of something. Apparently it was, actually.
I also have a really clear memory of my 2nd grade teacher making me start a drawing over, because people aren't just a head with legs and arms. That made me so mad, man. I mean, I know they have bodies and feet and hands and stuff! That stuff is just really hard to draw.

now sometimes I write really neatly out of the blue, but most of time it's generally illegible.

also: weirdly, my Arabic handwriting is really really neat. At least, it was until I got better at it, when it suddenly became messy like my normal handwriting.

Call me nuts, again, but cursive takes me longer. I have a psychological block against dotting the is and crossing the ts at the end... I have to do it in mid-write... and so it's slower for me, anyway. I don't know why. Unless I am consciously forcing myself, I dot and cross everything as I go. I can't unlearn that.

I used to believe that it had something to do with my being left-handed but other left-handed people tell me that's not the case.

I'm also told that I have very legible handwriting and printing for a left-handed person but that it is really not that much of a compliment, that most right-handed people consider left-handed peoples' handwriting completely unreadable and since I write ugly but essentially decipherable, I am near the top of my ilk.

I find these things interesting.

I remember back in kid times, I was told I was only allowed to have a bank account if I knew how to write in cursive, because according to mom and a bank teller "you must use cursive to fill out a check!"  Aparently cursive is a lot harder to forge?  So once I learned it I got a kid's savings account where I put my allowance.  The only time I use cursive now is for writting out checks.  A part of me thinks my checks wont be accepted unless they're filled out in cursive.  Eighty-dollars and Twelve Cents to the gass company calls for squiggles and loops you see.

Checks and cursive are both fast becoming obsolete. hmmm....

Wow, a lot of people really seem to dislike cursive. About what grade do most schools in the U.S. start teaching students how to write in cursive?

We started learning it in third grade.

I spent a lot of mental effort learning cursive, because I wanted to prove something to my third-grade teacher, who was the most hideous human being I've ever had to work with in a classroom. My handwriting was pretty bad in both printing and cursive, and she was a stickler, so she'd regularly send my worksheets back with instructions to "rewrite ten T's (or whatever) and hand this back in." I think I still use my hideous cursive to this day just to spite her.

I write in hybrid, but 90% in capital letters. This helps when writing in German because they have odd capitalization rules.

My printing, even, has devolved into a really strange sort of font of its own, I write on paper so damned little.

I haven't used upper and lowercases in my printing in years, my handwriting sort of looks like... hm.

You remember the comic book "The Maxx"? You remember the handwritten scrawl titlecards from the November Rain video?

Imagine a cross between the two and you have my printing. It's godawful but in a handsome sort of way.

No one has ever refused a check because I print instead of using cursive. I never heard of that rule.

Maybe it's just a Canadian rule.  I think I have some checks somewhere... in a drawer maybe.
