Van Morrison, Poetic Champions Compose.

I mean, St. Dismas on a stick.

the smiths the smiths the smiths.
Johnny Marr does a good job of explaining why I love my guitar. He thinks about guitars the way I do... which is weird because he can actually play guitar. "the telecaster doesn't feel like you're holding anything, it's so functional... the jaguar feels like you're holding a machine."

but mostly the part where he says it feels wrong to play blues rock on a jag. i definitely do sometimes, but it is not what it is for.

he talks in this interview I read about how it's too easy to play blues on the guitar... just the way the notes are laid out, it is how your hand wants to move. This is definitely true, for me at least. I really like, though, how the way a guitar works means it's always going to be easier to play certain kinds of things. Some instruments (like the piano) you can basically play any combination of notes you want. I like that on the guitar, it's always going to be GUITAR music, even if you manage to find some awesome chord/tone/whatever no one has come up with. Even if you're sonic youth and you tune your guitars to bizarro tunings, you're always going to be limited by those tunings to certain types of sounds. I don't know why I like that, but I do.

Limitations inspire true creativity.

Also, yes, the smiths a thousand times. At least I can keep seeing morrissey sing even if I never had a chance to see them together.

I'm still holding out hope for a reunion. I've seen Morrissey a few times (is it just me or is he getting sexier with age?) and always enjoy it but I would leave my wife and kids to see The Smiths reunited. Good thing I don't have a wife and kids. One of probably 5 favorite bands ever, and one of the two best bands of the 80s (other for me being Talking Heads). I've been listening to Strangeways a lot recently.

Completely agree with everything, except that the three best by the talking heads came out in the 70s.  Fear of Music, that is their masterpiece, in my opinion.

Also, strangeways, at least with whom I roll, is hell of underrated.

The Smiths. I would eat my own testicles to see them re-unite.

Talking Heads could easily qualify as one of the best bands of both the 70s and 80s. Most of their best stuff was released in the 70s, but the 80s saw Remain in Light (if not their best then a strong contender anyway) and their best song, This Must Be the Place.

I don't know if Strangeways is my favorite but it's up there, and I don't know why it doesn't get more love.

The Smiths. I would eat my own testicles to see them re-unite.

You win.

Yeah, but Judy would also eat his own nuts on a dare after a suitably boozy evening.

Also, say what you want about Texas ("fuck texas"), but they gave us The 13 Floor Elevators and The Flatlanders.  Two of the most revolutionary flame out bands ever.

Sorry Paul, I am from Oklahoma.  We have to.

Fuck it, here is some more:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlOBMC1RLw0

Oh man that electric jug.

So, holy shit, most of those songs are from an album produced by Kenny Rodger's brother.  Also, when I think of that, I think of this, again, so good:

Ex air force members making revolutionary music in Germany in 1965.  I am pretty sure most bands had never heard of them in the mid sixties, but god damn do they seem to have a large influence over the best stuff that came right after them.  My dad actually saw them when he was like 13, he was also one game away from the little league world series.  The joys of being a kid on an air force base in Germany at that time, I guess.

Oh yeah, in a continuation of bizarre instrument hour, that is a banjo converted to a guitar playing rhythm guitar.

Wow, thanks for all those links man; I need more country in my life. I basically just listen to this one Marty Robbins album over and over again (and I had NO idea that the Meat Puppets [!] did a cover of this until I searched Youtube just now).

So earlier I was listening to this Buffalo Springfield song and the first 20 seconds reminded me of another song, but I could only think of tiny snippets of it. After 15 min. of furious googling, and humming, and searching through my library I finally realized I was thinking of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. I felt kind of embarrassed that I could hum the first couple bars but I completely blanked on the song, but then it led into a marathon Neil Young session so it's all good.

Oh yeah.  Great stuff.  But why did they print their record labels backwards?

holy crap, Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve.

The band name is stupid.

anyway, they're these two DJs who do a lot of remixes that apparently people who like remixes like.
But this album is something else. As far as I can tell, they have taken small fragments of other people's songs, and turned them into new songs.
Loop a tiny drum break, add in live bass, use the vocals from another song...

it is really awesome.

It's all kind of psychedelic rock? I guess?
Soul influence
starts out electronic, gets more psychedelic

I cannot find a link to my favorite song off of the album. I found the song it samples from, and it seems that basically they took a song that is just a little bit off, and turned it into an awesome song. Added loud bass guitar and drums, did something weird to the drawn-out note at the end of certain phrases to turn it into a cool vocal harmony...
