Mayo on fries?

Are Southerners secretly French-Canadian?

Cheese curds and gravy on fries is French Canadian.  Mayo on fries is Belgian/Flemish/Other European.

Man, my uncle keeps knocking them out of the park.

This one was titled Dallas Solution.  While it's true that Dallas will tow and impound any car that fails to show proof of insurance if pulled over, it's kind of a stretch to say that this is a nefarious scheme to rid the city of illegal immigrants.  More likely it's simply a desperate money grab by yet another city suffering from staggering municipal debt.  And of course, it's even worse to boast in an email that you are pleased that this is taking place.

Driving without proof of insurance is not cool. What's the problem with enforcing that? Is it that the fine is a bit too stiff, and the chances of getting caught are too low?

I think it's funny that this instance of the government forcing folks to buy insurance is considered fantastic, while in a certain other arena it's not.

When I visited my dad's house today, he was listening to Rush Limbaugh and writing a letter to the local board of elections. For real.

Well, no one is forced to drive. I think that's the difference.

Most places just issue a ticket and require you to show up in court or otherwise show that you had insurance at the time. There is a hefty fine if can not produce proof in court.

A tow and large fine simply for lack of proof at the moment seems heavy handed. What if you hadn't got around to putting the new card in your car yet? What if you thought you had it, but it couldn't find it when you were pulled over?

after nearly choking to death on a waffle fry, i opt for two sandwiches instead of a sandwich and those horrifying jagged discs of death

Hell yeah, two sandwiches (with pickles) and a side of coleslaw. And sweet tea.

Cheese curds and gravy on fries is French Canadian.  Mayo on fries is Belgian/Flemish/Other European.

They do it in Germany too. Is it all of Europe?

There's a really good Belgian fries place in Salt Lake. Like probably the best fries in the western United States. You can get mayo but also other really good sauces, and if you don't like any of the sauces the fries stand on their own.

I saw this posted on Facebook and actually thought it was pretty funny.

Regarding the mosque near ground zero, I say let them build it. But across the street, we should put a topless bar, called "You Mecca Me Hot". Next to that, a gay bar called "The Turban Cowboy" and next to that, a pork-rib restaurant called "Iraq o' Ribs" And a check cashing center called... "Iran out of money."

Right up until they impound HIS car because he lost his insurance card or some other technicality.

Just for the record, I am in favor of having insurance coverage on my vehicles and I am pro enforcement of laws that require such.  Hey, if there were less uninsured motorist collisions it might lower my rates.

Where that email goes wrong is asserting that this law was designed specifically to punish illegal aliens and gloating over it's (alleged) success.

The problem is that mandatory auto insurance requirements are a bitch to enforce.  It's very easy to circumvent having to provide proof of insurance when you register you car -- there are tons of places that will sign you up for a fairly modest initial payment, then drop your coverage when you don't make a second payment.  So if all you need is an insurance card for the day you're going to register your vehicle -- no problem.

Ironic that we'd be having this discussion today.  I just heard from daughter Lucy, who was involved in a hit and run fender bender a couple hours ago.  Sigh.

did I tell you guys that a couple weeks ago, I damaged someone's car for the first time ever, and it happened to be the day after my registration expired? I had just left the DMV to go get some paperwork I forgot at home. Pulling over to run into the bank, I scraped the shit out of this guy's back fender trying to parallel park. Then he came out of the business we were in front of, and told me "whatever, man, I'm not too worried about it."

Ash, the remedy for poor insurance compliance is higher fines. IIRC, in Illinois the fine is $500 (more than I paid for yearly above-minimum liability coverage). You also must prove that you have purchased insurance or face suspension of your license, etc.

Car impounding is heavy-handed because storage fees quickly rack up. If you can't come up with money quickly, then you'll likely lose your car.
