When I was working the horrible T Mobile call centre job, one of my coworkers was asked in orientation by another if he goes to church.

He said yes to her and then, under his breath, turned to me and said "Church's friiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiied chicken."

It was one of the funniest things I ever heard. Adri has used it to get around admitting she is godless to one of her students from a religious family.

It is pretty much great. It is a great thing to say.

church's is pretty shitty. popeye's is the best of the chicken chains in my mind; their spicy fried chicken is damned good, and the biscuits are nice and buttery.

disclaimer: i have never eaten at a kenny roger's roasters. something tells me that life is indeed complete without that experience.

I ate at Church's once because someone told me their southern style chicken sandwich was identical to a Chik Fil A. This is not true. Also, they were extremely rude to me.

I am surprised by all the hate on Church's. I remember it fondly. But then, I was a little kid, and the Church's in the white-bread suburb I grew up in was maybe not a representative sample.

Church's is pretty run of the mill. I don't hate it, but even the best chicken chain is pretty low grade, Popeye's included, although they are the best of the bunch.

Fried Chicken is easy to make ok, but surprisingly difficult to make great, apparently. In Houston the best place is Frenchy's, which is technically a chain now, but from what I can tell the new owners haven't changed anything.

fried chicken is near impossible to get perfect, and easy as the dickens to get horribly wrong.

Forget the difficulty in making it - its cleaning up afterwards that always gives me pause when I consider the attempt.

A young lady who I thought I was interested in told us that:
1. St Louis has no good breakfast food, because it is all classic fare instead of weird high-brow stuff.
2. My favorite Mexican place is "not authentic" and bad because they serve tacos with a few ingredients and Tortas instead of dishes with names like "2 ENCHILADAS 2 TACOS SLATHERED IN REFRIED BEANS CHOOSE PORK BEEF OR CHICKEN."

I think I am coming to the conclusion that Chicago is the worst, and living there ruins people.

If you want something creative and fancy for breakfast, that's fine. But breakfast is the best meal in America PRECISELY because you can get a good breakfast anywhere. If she says "St. Louis has no interesting breakfast fare," that's her opinion, but to dismiss it as not "good" is bullshit. Pancakes and waffles are fuck*ng awesome, and I don't need truffle butter or artisinal bacon to enjoy them.
And #2 is just heart-breakingly stupid. This isn't the girl with the cupcake tattoos, is it? That would be a downer.

Yup. Cupcake tattoos.

I guess what bothers me the most is that I am totally aware that my food preferences are illogical. Food is not a logical thing, and I do not pretend to have some overarching food ideology. There are plenty of foods that I like that are greasy and low-brow and I don't care.

But La Vallesana is a great restaurant, and I eat there at least once a week. If that food is not "authentic" then maybe Mexican food is bad, and they are saving me from how bad it is. If anything I think their quality may have declined a tiny bit recently, or maybe it is just that their prices have doubled since i started eating there a few years ago. But, you know, doubled to a normal price for food in a restaurant building that they just completed, instead of being a paper plate with tacos on it served out a literal shack with some picnic tables around it.

Also, note the tension between being mad that all the St Louis breakfast food is low-brow, and only liking Mexican places with giraffebowl-sized margaritas and food doused in grease.

It is really interesting working someplace where I am the minority. Having to explain to people things like, "yes, I am legitimately scared when I hear gunfire, because I had literally never heard gunfire until I moved here" and "no, that lady is not being a bitch. I can confirm that the way that you talk is difficult for some people to understand. I did not understand you when I started working here."

Also, today a coworker (who is 30 with kids) asked if I thought she could attend WashU when she is done with this year of community college. That felt a little like a punch in the stomach.
