Self immolation is not a typical human behavior.  The monk's protest was remarkable because of this fact.

Ah, "typical". That qualifier does indeed change things. I couldn't get that from A-cap's, post, though. Hear the guy tell it, it would seem *impossible*, really.

If you waited to feel perfect before exercising, you'd never get to do it.  Partially because exercising regularly is part of feeling good.  You've been leading an active life long enough to know the difference I suspect.  Newbs have a harder time separating pain from injury.  Caveat: if one exercises as penance for an otherwise indulgent lifestyle (smoking, overeating, etc) then he/she may not learn the distinction.

The line between "sore" and "injured" can be a little blurry at times, but usually it's not too hard to tell which side you're on.

pukin' a little from a workout isn't bad. As long as you don't fuck up your tendons or bones or ligaments or cartilage, you're not going too hard. Pain is just weakness leaving the body. Unless it is blood leaving the body. I skipped climbing tonight because my belay partner has all kinds of joint problems. I'm just gonna do pullups, pushups, and yoga. If I puke from that, I'll be self-happy.

Self immolation is not a typical human behavior.  The monk's protest was remarkable because of this fact.

Neither is building bombs or desperate cannibalism or running a hedge fund, but for some reason those activities get brought up as evidence of "man's true nature." The reigning view in anthropology as far as I can tell is that we, for whatever reason, are really invested in the idea that humans are quintessentially violent and exploitative and greedy. When people do those things, instead of saying "hmm, I wonder why?" we say "oh, of course, that's human nature." When people help each other (or burn themselves in protest) we say, oh, that must just be an exception. There must be some underlying greedy explanation. The reality is, humans are fucked up, and also love helping each other, and those are both parts of the human animal.

One of my favorite psychology experiments went this way. They left a preschooler alone in a room with a box of cookies. In half the cases, they gave the kid a big speech about how much shit he was going to be in if he ate the cookies-- they weren't his, and we KNEW he was a bad boy sometimes, but he'd better not eat them or there'd be hell to pay. In the other half, they told the kid how he was such a good boy, and we know the cookies look good but please don't eat them, because they are for the whole class. The kid in the second case was way less likely to eat the cookies, the kid in the first case almost always ate them.

Some people end up more one way or the other.

Good, because my idealism is actually a cynical ploy to get laid.

Finished the first part of my Machado de Assis/H. P. Lovecraft pastiche yesterday! Now some revision and pruning, and then I'll put it online, I guess. In the meantime, gotta keep plowing through the rest of the story. But I'm only mentioning this here because a version of this handsome feller makes an appearance in the last chapter, and I wanted to share all its abomination-y deliciousness with you guys (all together, "awwnn"):
