I was already concerned that the pair of shoes I got for xmas pushed me into "owns too many shoes" territory, but now that they arrived (the original pair didn't fit and they were out of my size) I realize they are way more similar to my main everyday shoes than I thought. This is bothering me, and also the fact that this bothers me so much is making me embarrassed.

OH MAN

I experienced Shoe Shame this week, too. Pedro -- in an effort to help me get my poop in a group -- gathered up all my shoes and lined them up so that I could go through them and put the ones I want to wear most frequently in the most easily-accessible locations. I counted them all up and realized that I had THIRTY pairs of shoes. I got rid of five that were worn out, but that left me with twenty five, and that seems really excessive. But I do actually wear each pair with regularity -- in the proper season -- and I know that if I got rid of some of my fancy shoes I would end up replacing them next time I have to get dressed up.

Still. 25 pair. I hear this is not a lot for a woman. But it feels like a lot to me.

I'm sure I have at least that many. It's really hard for me to find shoes that fit so I hardly ever have a pair that fits well enough that I can wear it two days in a row. That's my excuse. That's also why I don't hesitate to buy something if it fits and put it away in the closet even if I don't need it.

Today my dog has 100% fewer testicles and 50% larger nostrils than he did at this time yesterday. He is not a fan of the cone and I hope he doesn't actually have to wear if for the the full 10-14 days. Because if nothing else it means I'll get less sleep because a coned dog doesn't sleep in the bed and a dog not sleeping in the bed is a dog that gets me up 3 times a night.

Do you have the regular plastic cone? We have a thing called the Comfy Cone that is less awful.

Did your breeder help pay for the nose surgery? Seems like something they ought to do, if they're breeding defective dogs who can't breathe.

We do. I'll run to the pet shop across the street at lunch and look at the soft ones.

The vet recommended the rhinoplasty as a preventative measure. Samson has no issues now but she said frenchies with tiny nostril tend to have more respiratory issues as they age and fixing it while he's young and already under for the neutering is the safest time to do it. We were comparing his nose to the ones in our frenchie calendar and his nostrils were clearly smaller than all 12 of those dogs. The vet first mentioned it when he was 8 weeks old but said his nose might grow into his face. Yesterday she said he wasn't even a borderline case and definitely needed the surgery.

If you get the Comfy Cone you do have to make sure he can't get at his nose with it on, or rub his nose against things. Because it's flexible, there are some things it doesn't work as well for. But our vet told us not to use it when Lilly had an eye problem and she was so miserable that we decided to ignore him and give it a try and it was fine. Make sure you observe him for a while, and maybe use the regular one when he's left alone.

The Lady vetoed the comfy cone. Apparently the vet normally gives those out (or off-brand versions, anyway) but wouldn't for Samson because of his nose problem. If it was just the neutering he might not need a cone at all as he doesn't appear to be able to reach the site of those stitches anyway.

Make sure the dog knows who to blame the cone on then. It's not your fault!

I made up for the sin of keeping the shoes by arranging to sell my banjo, giving away my extra backpack, and and resolving to list my 12 string electric guitar on craigslist.

Next: total clothing inventory, then CULL.

How much do you want for the 12 string?

50 or 60 bucks. It was 120 or so new. But I think I overpaid, it was an eBay find. It is a telecaster look-alike. It has been played very few times, sounds pretty cool. If you want, next time you're in STL you can try it out.

In a little bit I am going to do a few play-throughs of my song with my roommate, and this saturday we are performing it in front of a bunch of friends. My other roommate coordinated this big thing-- like 40 people are going to come and play songs in our basement. We're just going to leave the guitar/bass/drums/guitar/keyboard set up in one corner and people are taking turns playing songs. This is the first song I have ever written, the first time I am playing music in front of people. Just the thought of playing the song and SINGING for my roommate is making me nervous, much less playing in front of a bunch of friends. But I believe it will be great or at least fun. The whole idea is to stimulate our friends to go out on a limb and perform in a safe space.

The melody came out fully formed in the shower, which means at the end someone will point out it is a ripped-off Beatles song or something.

I am trying to remind myself that if I saw a guy playing surf guitar and singing, there is a 90% chance I would think the guy was cool/brave/whatever, and also I would think "damn, I could do that! why don't I do that!"

I tried to toe the line. I don't want it to be too heart-on-the-sleeve, but I also don't want it to just be a big joke. So it's a simple little Motown-y riff with transparent early-adulthood symbolism.
(They can keep Waikiki-i-i/
I prefer the Missouri-i-i/
Waves may be bigger out there/
I'd rather surf the Des Peres)

someone will inevitably film it on their phone, so maybe I'll have a humiliating youtube link for you guys.

I was part of a gender-bending karaoke band with pretend instruments called the Guy-Guys in a college dorm competition in front of 400ish people.  It also featured my then-future wife (but not girlfriend at the time!) doing a Victor/Victoria thing on bass which goes down as her bravest performance prior to teaching "Health" to 9th graders.  To be fair, going burlesque isn't as hard as actually performing something that matters, IMO.

We didn't win, but another (more sincere) male-dressed-as-female did for a sultry performance of "Black Velvet" by Alanna Myles.  Completely fooled the entire audience, including the lighting crew.  The dramatic reveal was almost spoiled when the spotlight left the performer at the end of the song just as he was doffing his wig.  It shot back to him in an almost comical double-take, and the crowd went nuts.  Dude was a theatre-arts major though, so he had the stones to perform like that.

oh man, totally went well. We figured out a structure and a long twangy whammy bar outro and a fake-out intro. Also, hearing my own singing voice is cool, the chorus where I yell a little and my voice gets crackley is great. This is cool.

i was in theatre from high school through college. in one experimental piece we performed, i hammed the fuck out of an ethel merman impersonation via song-n-dance. in one shakespeare piece, i played several background characters including one with this impossible soliloquy and another with a monster rack and a rolling pin, henpecking her husband. there were a couple other times too. drag is super common in theater groups, on- or off-stage.

last night, my car might have finally quit on me. '99 galant, bought in '01, paid off in '06, still under 200k miles. still, it's a 15-year-old mitsubishi, which isn't that bad. in a lucky stroke, the missus had a tour guest offer the use of a friends & family code for the auto company he works for. so today i'm going to run our free semiannual credit reports, and figure out how to get our credit scores without impacting same, so i can go in to the negotiation well-armed and ready to deal.
