One of my roommates insisted on rolling the stats for his D&D character, and now has a totally overpowered monster dude who will ruin everything. Is it mean-spirited or unfair to have his character have an "accident" somehow that drains some stats?

Overpowered characters can be controlled by shaping the story to be less dependent on dice rolling, and feature more decision making and character story development.  This takes experience of course, but the sooner you start down that path the better you'll become at it.  A good workaround is not to roll the DM's dice out in public view.  That allows you to make decisions about the degree to which you allow chance to shape the story.  You need to do it from day 1 though.  You can use a public die roll as an element of heightened drama, too.  The hidden DM dice can be a good device to keep the players guessing to.  You can just roll and inspect some dice at various points whether it means anything or not.  If someone gets uppity about questioning your motives, just say , "Look, are we here to adventure, or to argue game mechanics?".

LFM, hell yes. I had a weird dream all night where I went into NYC and my stupid high school friends who live there were making me go see a play or something, when all I wanted to do was buy some comic books and eat some dumplings. Meeting up sounds great.
