I am in Philadelphia and will be moved into my apartment in New Jersey by the end of the week. I am very grateful that my parents are helping me move, but it makes me feel like a child and I am losing my mind.

Also, these people do not know how to drive. They hang out in the left lane and talk about all the "crazy" drivers tailgating them or passing them on the right. Have they always done this?

When in Rome, drive like the Romans do.

You wanted to learn about urban life, right?

sorry, that was bad phrasing: my parents are the ones who don't know how to drive.

My kid rode his bike smack into the back of my neighbor's (parked) truck. Thank God for helmets; he's fine. But he busted his lip and has a wicked shiner. And guess what? Tomorrow's picture day at school. Gonna look like the losing side of a bar fight in the yearbook. Nine year old boy? Yeah, sounds about right.

God, I did that when I was in 9th grade.  Not looking where I was going and clipped the back of a car.  Flipped right over the handlebars and landed on my back in front of the bike.  Ow.  Got up and pedaled away, so I guess it wasn't too bad.

Moved into my new place today. Put together some Ikea furniture, stared at the pile of boxes for a while, went to the Korean grocery store and stocked up on all the good stuff.

No AC, no fan. I'm dying. Eating my kimchi fried rice I was sweating bullets.

We had a cold front in Houston today. Of course cold is a relative term, but mid 80s this afternoon and into the 60s tonight in AUGUST is fuck*ng insane.

Semi-spontaneously went into NYC at the last minute last night and met an acquaintance and went to a show. Ate pierogies, bagels, arepas, a burger. Drank many beers and one enormous coffee. Slept on said acquaintance's couch, then met up with a good friend from college. Hugged lots of people, almost fell asleep in a park in Brooklyn, watched hispanic dudes play volleyball for a few hours with a girl from my program (the only friend I've made in NJ) who introduced me to her extremely friendly Brooklyn friends. They spent all of dinner talking about looking for an apartment and citing prices and damn if you don't have to pay a premium to be where the fun is (IE where it's provided for you instead of making your own like in St Louis).

I think if I sit home and read library books and eat rice with veggies for the rest of the week my budget will work out to be only spending twice what I should have.

That city has so many pretty ladies. Hot damn.

It is pretty funny that my parents were super gung-ho about me going to Rutgers, but now they keep mentioning that the Northeast is really expensive and I might not want to stay here long term. Sending me articles about how unhappy New Yorkers are and how it's hard to have a family there.

New apartment is going pretty well, I just need more storage space. Second roommate arrives today, who seems much friendlier than the guy who is already here based on our emails.

Because everything I've heard is that in this field you mostly find jobs in the region where you went to school. And we talked about that a lot, and they agreed that the northeast seems like a good place to find jobs. Who knows.

Anyway, my plan is that when it's time to do an internship I'll apply to a few interesting places (including NYC, St Louis, maybe a few other northeastern/mid-atlantic cities) and see what pans out and where it leads.

yeah, totally. I think their worry is actually that I get excited and mentally commit to things instead of keeping my options open. Which is true.
