Anyway, then it would be longer before you had to eat the hosss when the apocalypse comes. Better to keep the hosss for transportation as long as possible, isn't it?

I have not eaten a hoss, but I have eaten a zebra. It is a terrible experience. Tough, stringy meat with no flavor to speak of. It is my understanding that eating hoss is A Thing in some places of the world. I weep for these parts of the world where beef is not a thing. Camel, on the other hand, is delicious.

My fav professor at school is famous (in planning circles) for his proposal that we should stop subsidizing Great Plains states that have been losing population for 100 years, and then reintroduce buffalo herds. Giant national park. Buffalo meat. I am not good enough on my geography to know whether those are the same states currently having an oil boom. This proposal was back in the 70s or 80s when he was a young troll instead of an older troll.

And right now I'm writing a paper for him where my main reoccurring example is butchering a pig in a public park. So clearly there is a Meat theme going on tonight.

Is it worth the investment of time/dollars?

I'll be finding that one out, I s'pose.

For me, the dollars would probably work out but the time wouldn't.  What are you looking at, averaging out to a couple hours a day?

Basically I am talking about how we decide what is and is not allowed in public places. And how someone is always gonna be mad about what you allow/don't allow. The real example (because there was not really any info in the books I read about pig butchering in public, although it's probably out there) is from my old job. There were all these homeless dudes who would hang out outside the store, and would often heckle/panhandle/catcall people. On the one hand, yeah, it's a free country and there isn't a law that says you can't yell vulgar things at people. And beyond that, even a polite homeless person makes people uncomfortable, just by sitting/sleeping on a bench. On the other hand, those people they are heckling are being driven out of a public space (which they also have a right to be in). Maybe a better example is teenagers. Certain people are always going to be made uncomfortable by large groups of teenagers. But teenagers are people too, you can't just say "no groups of teenagers may sit on the benches in public."

Mostly the point of my paper is that pretending there's such a thing as a win-win scenario in this situation, or an objectively "fair" solution, is not going to accomplish anything. There are these multiple groups (protestors who want to occupy a park, people who want to play with their kids in the park, people who want to BBQ a whole pig in the park, homeless people who want to sleep in the park) and there is no way to make everybody happy. The park cannot have all of those things in it at the same time, and there will always be winners and losers.

The more I think about it, maybe butchering a pig or having a rowdy public protest is a better example. Some people are squeamish about protests or pig-slaughter but they are both things that need to happen somewhere, no matter how much they might involve squealing or unpleasant odors.

Yeesh, my thoughts are even less organized than I thought they were.

Goats! Goats! So many good messageboard posts!

Has anyone played Goat Simulator? If so, why is it rated M for Mature? Off-hand it seems like something my 11-year-old would find riotously funny, but I saw that M and stopped.

Tonight some friends and I met for dinner at a deli in a strip center. For some reason they chose this strip center parking lot to hold a vigil for the victims of the terrorist attacks today. I had to park a damn mile away from the restaurant because of all the people come to protest.

Is there a Pakistani restaurant there, maybe?

When you've done something so fucked up that other Taliban groups say you're doing it wrong, there's no hope for you.

The thing that makes this event even worse is that they attacked dozens of families' kids. Regardless of culture, when you slaughter their kids, there will be blood revenge.

No, they were beside the Starbucks.

Read his other articles, link at the bottom. He's pretty spot-on.

Yeah, that whole series has been quite fascinating.

I've been thinking quite a bit of late about what a vindictive lot we Americans are. We (collectively) don't want to rehabilitate people, we want them to be punished, harshly. Apparently we think prison rape is part and parcel with the sentence for anything. You got busted for shoplifting, then got involuntarily fucked in the ass? Ha! Ha! Shouldn't have gotten sent to prison!

It's reflected in so many things: our attitude toward torture, police brutality, gun incidents (people who are "defending their home" and use deadly force when it's not really necessary), and how we treat ex-cons. Remember that "pointer-gate" thing a few months ago where the mayor (Minneapolis?) was posing with an "ex-con" and making "gang signs?" Yeah, that guy was an ex-con, but one who had turned his life around and was now a community activist. He's exactly what we should WANT to happen when someone gets out of prison. But that TV station was just willing to shout "ex-con!" as if no decent person should ever associate with him again.

It's almost like someone figured out it's easier to control people if you fragment them up all against each other.

Went to Williams-Sonoma today and bought a bunch of foodie junk for too much money. Christmas shopping is nearly done.

I'd like to get one more thing for my mom that is not a book or a food item (got those covered). Suggestions welcome.

I should get the pugs to buy those for me. I have some similar but those look like you could actually walk in them.
