Title: Music of Summer 07
Post by: side_show on July 05, 2007, 04:00:20 pm
Why is it that music sounds just that much better in the summer?  It just does.  I seem to have taken a bit of a departure from my folk music ways, and my lastest listens are of a decidedly more rock-based turn.

Music I have been throughly enjoying includes:

The Cliks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJD4QLsohT8) - sexy f-to-m trans lead singer, all lesbian girl back band, pared down rock.  Also, they sing a cover of Justin Timerlakes Cry Me A River that actually makes me like the song!

Mika (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcRiXOONqf0) - okay, this guy is the sound of summer.  I'm sure lots of you have heard him already, but... hell yeah.  I've already heard his music floating on the air on the hottest dog days.  He is also sexy, post-gay and heavily influenced by Freddy Mercury... awesome.  Also, specifically re: this song - it is almost impossible not to dance around!

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8z2AmZL-_Y) - okay, so their album came out last summer, but, just... fuck yes.

Also the White Stripes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OjTspCqvk8) latest is on replay quite often.  When they were out here last week they just set up and started busking on a bridge for a while.  How cool is that?  I missed it though, which sucks.

Saving the best for last, I predict this song  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU)will be everywhere this summer!

I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs support the Stripes about 4 years ago in Seattle. Liked the album, did not like them live.

As I said somewhere else, we're going to see the Stripes in Chicago in October. I'm leaning heavily toward seeing them in NM as well - I can stay with my brother. The new album is tasty - we got free pins and stickers!

I will be checking out the Cliks and Mika, for sure. Thanks for that.

Man, fuck you guys and your Rick Roll! Jesus.

Anyway... God, smells, I love you for turning me on to the Cliks. Are you sure the lead singer is trans? Is he in the process of transitioning or is he just butch? I bet that if he's taking testosterone his voice will change a lot. If he is a trans guy, he needs some sexy facial hair. I love his sleeves and his sexy emo boi hair. His voice rocks the casbah but it's still feminine, which is why I kinda doubt he's on T.

Anyway, they are fuckin' awesome and I will be buying their music posthaste.

I also kinda did not like Mika, the girls in his video were decidedly normal and not "big girls".

I think they must be planning something special. It's hard to believe that one of the folks responsible for this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFLpVPuvH2M&mode=related&search=) wouldn't show up at all.

Yay!  I'm glad you like The Cliks, I listened to them all day today.  Also, yes the lead singer, Lucas, is transgendered - though for their first independant album he identified as a female lesbian he has since transitioned.  I saw him discussing it very saucily in an interview on MuchMusic a while back, and also here's and article about his transition (http://www.spinner.com/2007/06/11/rockin-out-interview-the-cliks-lucas-silveira/) - sounds like he has some awesome parents.  He is super cute and I too enjoy his Beethovan hair.  The name of the band comes from the combination of clits + dicks, and their new album is called Snakehouse and can be bought in the iTunes store, as well as elsewhere.  I got it from zunior.com, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Nabu, I don't care what Linnea says, Mika rawks, so check him out too.

As for the Rick Roll... I enjoy the Rick Roll.  Before I posted the video I watched it all the way through.  Rock.

Dept. of music stuff that kinda sucks:  Last year when the car stereo in the Jetta broke, I got a new one, a cheapie (only $100), but it fit the bill.  It's able to read MP3s from CD, and also included the "iPlug," an auxiliary jack to plug in your iPod or other MP3 player.  I enjoyed this, as I got in the habit of downloading podcasts, especially KEXP's Music That Matters, and other free MP3s found here and there, and playing them in the car.  And for the first time since college or soon thereafter, I felt like I kind of knew what was going on in the world of music.

Then we traded in the Jetta and got the minivan.  I did have the MP3-laden stereo taken out of the Jetta before it was carted off, but I'd have to pay to have it put in the Alero that I now drive on a day-to-day basis.  The Alero's factory stereo plays regular CDs just fine, so it's not like I'm devoid of music.  But converting podcasts to WAV and burning them to CD is teh suck.  So I haven't listened to anything new in like two months.  I miss me car-based MP3 player.

I got one of those FM transmitters for $10 - the kind that runs on two AAA batteries and transmits your iPod onto any FM radio.  It's works great and has the added benefit that I can play my iPod not just through car radios, but basically any radio I want.  Seriously dude, there is no reason to not be rocking out right now.  When is the time to rock out?  Now is the time to rock out.

But see, I've heard those things aren't so good in a radio-station-heavy like DC.  It gets stepped on by every crappy low-wattage station in the same area of the dial.  That's fine up in the wilds of Canadia where there's like one radio station per province and there are more moose than people.
Title: Re: Music of Summer 07
Post by: wombat on July 09, 2007, 07:22:02 pm
I got one of those and tried it in the DC area and indeed, it doesn't work worth a shit.

I now have a thing that is a cassette that I put in the cassette player and it has a wire coming out to plug into the mp3 player.  But it seems like such a bother that I haven't used it yet.  So it's still the old Bruce Springsteen tapes or NPR for me.

Those cassette things don't work on all car stereos though - infact they won't work on mine, which is why I got the transmitter.  All the stuff I've read seems to indicate a 50/50 split on the debate as to whether the transmitters work in station heavy areas or not.  One of the Chonchitas on the iTunes board said that my Phillips brand transmitter worked great for her in LA proper, so I took her advice and bought mine, but I don't really have an idea as to whether DC is comperable to L.A. or not in regard to the number of stations.  The one I have works on the 88._ frequency, and we do have a couple of 89._ stations locally, including the super powerful CBC radio, but it comes in very clear most of the time.  I did read up on them a lot, as I was originally going to buy a fancy, expensive one... each brand seems to be really touch and go, where one works for someone, another - not so much.

I use one in Portland and it is basically pretty shitty. Its internal voume is low, so when it is playing at normal volume and you unplug it or switch to a CD or the radio, it's like three times as loud. Also, it is on an arm plugged into the cigarette lighter, and it sort of bounces up and down, and sometimes it makes a crackling sound. Basically it sucks. I also get a bit of bleed-through.

It is going to be a serious consideration for the next car purchase that it have a purpose-built jack for an mp3 player. I am done fuck*ng around with this.

I'm working on a solution to the music player in the car situation which involves never having to drive to a job again. NPR will suffice for driving the dogs to the park and such.

2 years ago I got one of the stereos with a dock connector. It is nice that it charges the iPod and I can control it from my regular stereo face, but the controls are really hard to use. It's like, to see what artist you're listening to you have to push Function enough times to get to the F3 menu, then press down to see the artist. Then hold down if you want it to scroll. Then press down 4 more times if you want it to go back to the song title.

But having just one cord to plug in when I get in the car is awesome. And the stereo has a thing where I can adjust the relative volume of each input. So when I put a CD in the volume lowers itself like 10 clicks from FM and when I switch to the iPod it goes up 10.

In the Audi TT, you plug your iPod in inside the glove box, and then you just use the regular deck's controls, as if each playlist was a seperate CD in the changer. I'm not sure how this works in practice, but I plan on test-driving one fairly soon.

They wanted to put mine in the glove box but I had it the cord come out in a "utility pocket" under the stereo. It means the white cord is visible through the window but I didn't want to have to open the glove compartment and reach way over every time I get in and out of the car.

I misunderstood your post. However, you'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) by what some people will do. My wife came home from school or some errand not long ago (can't remember which) with a BK bag in the bed of the truck. I sort of laughed and gave her a hard time because we don't eat fast food, and reached over to take it out of the back. Turned out the bag was chock-full of used syringes - yay!

I've never had a "live" needle stick. We had a needle stick in my EMT-II training class though. It was with a sterile needle while one of our dudes, Fernando, was trying to start a line in a dummy arm. Three pounds of paperwork, dude.

This is how I imagine a live stick would transpire. Ahem.

AIIIIEEEE!! UGH! *convulses* NEEDLE STIIIICK! Get medical control on the phone, 10-21! Jesus, Nabu, make that thing bleed. Let's get some disinfectant. Fuck, bleed it MORE! What does Hudson have to say about the disinfectant? We have some prep pads with nonoxyl-9. Oh god... get a 10-21 to the hospital, we've gotta get him started on a prophylaxis course of antivirals stat. Jesus fuck, I need some Kevlar antistick gloves and the biggest sharps container we got. Dude, I hope you're current on your Hep-A and tetanus. What do they do about Hep C?  Fuck it, I'm gonna use a stick to shovel them into the sharps box. *cue three dozen pounds of paperwork*

I've said enough about the quality of my neighbourhood that I won't repeat it.  If you don't know already, all you need to know is that I live in the ghetto, and that my SO has found needles lying around on our boulevard and other places around our neighbourhood as recently as last week.

I was at work, and it had come to the end of my day.  I'd come in with an expensive pair of European cork-based shoes, but it had started raining.  In case you're not aware, cork + rain = ruined shoes.  But I really wanted to go home.  Then I was like "I know!  I'll just walk home bare foot... oh, but then I'd be walking down my street, and then I'd be addicted to smack.  Sigh."

That is what I thought of when nabu mentioned the sack of needles.

But knowing McDonalds, this is just a new marketing ploy.

My question is how does rain ruin cork?

My friend Jan has an artcar covered with corks (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/561049498/).  She also has several (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/199039117/) outfits (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/507080954/#comment72157600237672454) covered in cork.

Cork shoes are awesome for folks like me with hella joint problems because the foot bed naturally conforms to your foot, making a natural and supportive insole.  The best known cork shoes are Birkenstock's, but mine are Mephistos (http://www.mephisto.com/PublishOnline/WebSiteClient.woa/init/site=Mephisto%2CFR) (they have a higher arch).  They are super comfy.  It is the combination of cork, plus water, plus pressure that makes them crumble.  So Paul, your friend's car probably crumbles in places where pressure is applied during saturation.  This can be remedied by buying and applying a bottle of cork protector, but I keep forgetting to get some.

I am convinced that every time I read a list of band names people are into, at least one of them is made up to see if I am cool enough to catch which one is the fake.

My heart says that "Silver Jews" is the fake but... it's almost too fake to be fake.

no, it's Justice. that can't be a band. I know that the Silver Jews are real.

also: I just downloaded a bunch of Folk Rock, but now I am sick of it before I listened. This happens so often.

So right now I am pretty into "Choubi Choubi," which is a compilation of Iraqi folk and pop music. Pretty much awesome. It makes me think that I need to keep taking arabic next year... which totally screws up all my classes. Not that they weren't already really messed up.

I've had one.  I was hung over, and got up to give my cat his morning insulin.  As I was trying to return the needle into the orange cap, apparently the needle got caught on the rim, and ended up bending to the side and puncturing through the cap and right into my thumb.

They're real, and they're spectacular.

And Justice is an awesome new electronic band.  That post was originally supposed to talk about how I was listening to lots of French electronic music, but then I remembered the Silver jews and National.

The Silver Jews are Stephen Malkamus' (Pavement) first band.  He is still a member, although they are getting old, so who knows if they are still planning anything, etc.  He doesn't write the songs or sing.  The other dude, it turns out, is a different but at least equally talented songwriter, and if singing is decent I don't complain (raised on Dylan).

Some people . . . don't purchase their music at brick-and-mortar CD shops. Also, if he is on a songwriter for them, it's just possible that his name is buried in the fine print. We aren't talking about an LP where you can spend hours re-reading it after you clean your weed.

Actually, the other day I expressed the wish that I could buy a couple of things and put them directly on my mp3 player instead of having to buy a cd, copy it to the computer, and then copy it to the device.

But, I wanted to do this because they were things I had already owned on LPs and didn't feel like I needed another physical copy of.  And, I couldn't figure out how to do it. So I am still so old.

I have actually never bought a Pavement record.  I did have to steal them the old fashion way though, the CD-R.  Back when everyone in your group had most of the same cd's and everyone had about 1/4 that were bought and all others copied.

And, while Malkmus is a member of one of my current bands, he is not really an important part, as I was trying to say.  I don't even know the main dudes name, just know I like his tunes.  I think his first name is Steve from some of the songs.  Music reviewers are as shitty as msm reporters.  I don't need their shit, and I don't need heroes.  I need anonymous people making amazing music, because that is what I listen to.

But yeah, I should have known how to spell his name.  He is pretty big time.  Plus I have a solo album of his that I have never listened to on iTunes.  So I have at least glanced at his name, but it was one of those things were I guess I thought I knew how to spell it (I have been pronouncing his name Malk-A-mus, stress on the middle A since I was like 15.  Probably never said it more than ten times though)  so never really paid attention.

Do you mean that you have one you haven't listened to, but you've listened to the others, or that you only have one and you haven't listened to it? Because both Stephen Malkmus (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:f9fwxqu0ldfe) and Pig Lib (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:0pftxqualdhe) are fuck*ng great. I just got Face the Truth (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:0zfoxqlsldke) so I'm not sure where I am at with that. I think fondly of Stephen Malkmus because Jeffrey Rowland (http://www.wigu.com/) turned me on to him.

The show was awesome, and near the end of the show as I snuck up near where the band would exit the stage,  a security guard saw me taking a photo, ran over to me, and I thought he was going to eject me from the area or give me shit about taking photos back there, but what he said instead was "Is that an iPhone?"

I told him indeed it was, and that I was posting photos to Flickr right from the concert.  He thought that was pretty cool, and since there were a lot of people there crowding us he took me back behind the secure area so he could play with my iPhone while the band came off the stage.  I held my hand out and Thurston Moore slapped it, like a sideways five.  Then they hustled out of there back to their trailer, high-fiving people along the way.

Of course, the security guard was playing with Google Maps while this was happening so I couldn't get a photo except of them entering their trailer, which was dark and blurry.

Good times.

Slint was awesome. I got a shirt.

I would have been 5 feet away from Brian MacMahan (sp?)  but my friend Bryan said "let's go stand over there! we'll be closer!"
which, I guess we were closer... to the guitar player? But the vocalist was whispering on the other side of the stage. Where we had just been.

It was awesome, though. Then we went and did Bryan's 3 hour (3-6 AM) radio show on WXYC. Which... sucked, surprisingly.

Also, s_s - we just grabbed Snakehouse. Holy fuck is this tasty. She is what Danzig would be if Danzig was cool and also sexy and hot. Oh man I am in love now.

We got some Mika too - the single you picked and Grace Kelly. Sweet. I'm fixing to get everyone at work into the Cliks, and then drop the bomb, and be all "what, the music sucks now? What's that about?"

Plus: Music of the Summer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeW_Zd2B2zU).

Yes, the Cliks are music gold.  I am in love with Lucas also.  I really like your ploy - let me know how it goes okay? Apparently they just rock live, which kills me because I got into them then found out they'd played my city less than a month before I picked up their album.  There's lots of their live performances posted on YouTube, so do check them out.  And everyone not in the lower 48, the Cliks are currently on tour and their schedule is posted at www.thecliks.com (http://www.thecliks.com).  They are on their way up, catch them while you can and if you go see them, let me know!

I was enjoying some Mika yesterday.  Grace Kelly, Lollypop, Love Today, and Big Girls are the best cuts.  Billy Brown is worth a listen but is a bit too much of a "hey did you notice I sound like Freddy Mercury?" type track for me.

hey, so, um.

a bunch of good bands are coming to St Louis pretty soon after I get back there.
and...

once again, I must ask, which of these bands should I see?

Bloc Party
They Might Be Giants
Animal Collective
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
Nada Surf and Sea Wolf
Menomena
Of Montreal.

I have already seen Of Montreal once. Based on the venues where they are held... Animal Collective, Ted Leo, and Nada Surf will be cheap or free. The rest will be... more expensive. like, 10-20$? I am trying to budget myself better this year, so, I can't go see all. To clarify, the only bands on this list that I have ever listened to are Of Montreal and TMBG... but I know many of the others are supposed to be wonderful, and I love live music. I am not above, for instance cramming in listening to Feels, which I already have on my computer, in order to go see Animal Collective with some appreciation. I did -not- do this when I went to see.... either Ratatat or !!!, I forget which... and it got old fast. Mostly because they sucked, but if I had listened to them before, maybe I would have saved 5 dollars?

basically? advise me.

I dig Bloc Party's previous album, but the most recent one was sort of a disappointment.  The singer/lyricist was sufficiently bitter and jaded to write good stuff on the last one, but he must have a new girlfriend or something.  Never seen them live; they don't strike me as a band that would put on a scorching live show, but I could be wrong.

I also dig me some Ted Leo, and I'm told he DOES put on a great show (again, never seen him, because I am old and married and don't go to concerts anymore).

The Weakerthans are playing at the 9:30 in October, they are totally geezer-friendly. I saw them there about a year ago and it was glorious. They're up there playing total indie music but the guitar and bass player are acting as if they are in the biggest, most over-the-top hair band ever.

Enough with the blasphemy. This is how The Verve rolls:

Lucky Man: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyTO0jW8T2o (http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyTO0jW8T2o)

Velvet Morning: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=8l0sTxtvDkY (http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=8l0sTxtvDkY)

Sonnet: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=RiQgEn5ibYg (http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=RiQgEn5ibYg)

They have a new album coming up. As much as I *know* that you can't cross the same river twice and most likely it will be at its utter best just non-crappy (if you squint a bit and still with a solid chance of being just crappy after all in the end), I'm still giddy and starry-eyed. Fuck it, I'm 30 and I have a prescription for medicinal nostalgia right here in my pocket.

"Freshmen" really was emo before emo, but I recall very much liking it at the time (I think I may have been a freshman in HS myself, or perhaps a sophomore). I vaguely recall it and "Brick" getting a lot of radio play at the same time, which made for depressing/"my mother attempts to have a serious conversation on the way to school" morning commutes.

people, you obviously do not know how old emo is. BE SERIOUS (I don't mean anything by this... it's just my favorite thing to say. I have been laughed at for saying "oh, come on, be serious!" when I accidentally spray myself with water while washing dishes.)

I mean, unless you like the current "emo" that is basically bad pop-punk, but with worse makeup, and crying.

I remember that song, too. I kinda liked it, but Kellichou HAAAAATED it. Brick was also hell of depressing. I remember you telling us about your mom bringing up the song and how you heroically ducked that discussion. Mom, do not bring up Ben Folds' girlfriend and their unplanned pregnancy crisis. Thanks.

But see, the term "emo" is relatively new to the common parlance.  In my teens, a dozen years ago (gah!), I listened to the sort of music you would now call emo, but it was most definitely not called emo.  Most everything I listened to was dubbed "alternative" except for the bands/artists that wore predominantly black and were more death focused, who were called "goth."  In my day the social group of teens who listened to that sort of music were also not called "emo" - we were called "losers" or "weird" or something.  I only hear "emo" being used to refer to these things, as a common phrase, about 4 years ago.

Title: Re: Music of Summer 07
Post by: theinevitable on July 28, 2007, 02:41:41 pm
yeah....

except that the roots of current pop-emo began with emo-core in the late 80s, evolving in the DC area with bands like Embrace and Rites of Spring-- largely on the Dischord label. Tired of the same old three-chords and hating Reagan, they began using more complex guitar parts and writing more emotionally complex lyrics-- causing them to be labeled Emotional Hardcore, which eventually got shortened a ton. Embrace was Ian MacKaye's band, but no one has ever heard their album, because he ate every copy of it in a drunken (with power) rage. Rites of Spring are 90% really annoying but a lot of people really dig them.

*starts gesticulating wildly and screaming nonsense syllables*
*wheezes for a bit, falls on the ground*

*blink* um, sorry about that, sometimes I get real... did I black out?

Money wisely spent - except it would be nice to actually be at the show where they broke up again. It's be like watching the Kinks when Ray and Dave erupted into fisticuffs, or the Oasis show where Liam heckled Noel incessantly.
