Title: It's A Virtual Costume Party!
Post by: jay-ell on October 11, 2010, 07:07:22 pm
This is a thread to talk about ideas for Halloween costumes and seek advice on how to create them. Later, after Halloween, we can post pictures! Yay!

I have not dressed up for a few years because there hasn't been a reason to, but this year we got invited to a grown-up Halloween costume party so I need one. The party is '80's/90's themed but I don't think the costumes need to be. I still want to go as Dr. Sam Beckett (dress as yourself and pretend not to know anyone), but everybody tells me that's too obscure.

I think I'm going to go as Liz Lemon because she is basically me with dark hair and a better career. Pedro is trying to decide which male character from 30 Rock to go as; I think he could do a bitchin' sexy Donaghy; he would be hilarious as Kenneth; and Frank would be fun to put together. (Trucker Hat Slogan: "TOTALLY FICTIONAL.")

My five-year-old decided he wants to be Elmo Dressed As A Ghost, which I find hilarious, so I'm totally making it happen. Two year old is going to be Abby Cadabby (her costume from last year still fits) dressed as a pumpkin, just to stay on-theme.

What are you all doing for International Grownups Playing Dress-up night?

I'm going as Satan Is My Motor. Basically I'm getting and off-the-shelf devil costume and wearing a red t-shirt with a picture of a motor on it.

Oh no! It is opposite of treat!

I'm thinking of either Frank or Kenneth from 30 Rock. Kenneth would end up being more of a performance thing, but would save me the cost of getting a hat from the flea market.

I am dressing at least one pug up in a torn bloodstained shirt and going on the Zombie Walk the weekend before Halloween.

Otherwise, probably staying home giving out candy. I don't understand a single costume idea here so far except Nabu's and Elmo, so if the others are representative, it's just as well I am not going to a party, it would obviously be a frustrating experience.

My brother is getting married on Halloween this year.  He and his fiance always have ragers on that day since its their favourite holiday - often with pictures not suitable for Facebook.  My family is going Old West, with the exception of my daughter who is dead set on being a witch.  I'm going to be a riverboat gambler.  I might go for spirit-gum muttonchops. Not enough time to grow them out naturally.

You should watch 30 Rock (http://www.hulu.com/30-rock). It is quite possibly the best-written show on television right now. I have recently (this week?) gotten hooked on it and now Pedro is giving me a hard time because I neglected (refused?) to watch it for the first 4 years it was on.

OK, the hostess confirms that the costumes are supposed to be '80s/'90s themed, so unless Pedro talks me out of it, I'm TOTALLY going as a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman (AKA Sam Beckett leaping into a lady). What a great excuse to watch the first season of Quantum Leap all over again.

Yeah, I'm a super-geek, super-geek, I'm super geeky...

Basically this. Possibly also work out what wrong you need to correct, "No! Uh... don't try the french onion dip, how about some sun-dried tomato instead?"

Also to make your costume less obscure make Pedro dress as Al.

And pretending not to recognize people at first. Or know basic things about yourself.

It would be hard to fake having 9 PhDs, though.

Please tell me you've see Victor Victoria. Please. OMG, Julie Andrews is so fine in that movie. Oooh, it came out in '82, I could totally go as Victoria Grant. And Pedro could go as Toddy! Heh heh heh.

No, actually I think we decided last night that we're going as Roger and Jessica Rabbit. I'm going to need some heavy-duty spanx and one heck of a push-up bra...

I was the king of lazy costumes in college.

One year, I had a hoodie and cheap sunglasses. Unabomber!

Another, I just wore a tan long-sleeve shirt and tan Dockers. I told people I was a sand dune.

My most inspired costume as an adult, though, was The Ghost of George Lucas's integrity.

Fake beard, talcum to look ghost-like, red hat, flannel shirt and a lot of remaindered Jar-Jar toys on paperclip chains around my upper body.

I was pretty proud of that shit.

(jayelle, why can't you be Roger and your husband be Jessica?)

There has got to be a Bakula-related pun here.

Actually, we have a little joke about Captain Archer becoming a vampire..."I'm Bakula...Scott...Bakula..." Maybe I should go as Beckett dressed as Archer pretending to be a vampire. That would be awesome.

I have no problem with a certain amount of TV, and I am sure that if JL says that show is funny and well written, that is true. But with keeping up the Colbert and the Daily Show, and all the shows I watch on the Japanese channel with shows in English and no commercials, and even though TV is a good way to keep myself from jumping out the window while working on the references for my book at the same time, I don't have time for any more TV shows.

But, you know, there are DVDs, and like a friend of mine says, you have to save something to watch when you are old and in the nursing home.
Title: Re: It's A Virtual Costume Party!

Oh, yes. I do all of my television watching on Netflix Instant or DVD when I am otherwise engaged in something mundane -- folding laundry is a big one, or tidying up the living room/kitchen, or knitting from a pattern that requires a lot of plain stockinette.

There is no room in my life for being in front of the TV at a certain time on a certain night. I am all about the time-shifting, even if the shift can be measured in years (or decades). I was just saying, if you ever find something wanting in your television-watching experience, 30 Rock is extremely worthwhile.

When I was in college, I was extremely self-righteous about not owning a TV, but the end result was that I turned to the internet for entertainment and became a 'net junkie and obsessive gamer. At the time, I would have argued that computers are superior to television because of their interactive nature, but now I realize that that's bullshit and that there's about the same ratio of signal to noise in both places.

TL; DR -- Good TV is good.

...but now I realize that that's bullshit and that there's about the same ratio of signal to noise in both places.

I'm not sure I follow your argument here.  Do you stay away from television because of the poor signal to noise ratio or because it's a huge time suck or because most of it really blows?  Is the internet a huge time suck because of the poor signal to noise ratio or because of the infinite choices and instant availability?

I was just thinking the other day about how the lady and I are in the process of watching way too many things at once. The list of movies/shows I am not allowed to finish watching without her is getting silly.

I watch Mad Men every week, as soon as it airs if possible. If I have work late on sunday I watch it monday online. (Illegally.)

I try to stay away from things that suck regardless of their media format. Now that I'm well out of my pretentious college phase, I watch TV and goof around on the internet in roughly equal measure.

to be fair, though, I am having trouble thinking of a good reason to own a TV when you watch all of your television shows on DVD/hulu/whatever.

I own a TV, but I think I could count the number of times I have used it without having to move on to toes.

Teevee is still cheaper/less work if you're just looking for a piffle to watch in the background.

Hulu and DVD and thisFlix and thatBox are great for things you wanna study in detail but...

For when you just wanna leave a cooking show or a ballgame or a cartoon on in the background while you're eating or chilling out, teevee is still the go-to delivery platform.

And there's something still wonderful about the anticipation of a certain timeslot when there's something you're really into seeing first run.

Late Sunday afternoon, for me, becomes like a damn countdown if there's a new Venture Brothers, for example, and that's a wonderful feeling.

I should have specificied TV as it is originally broadcast, and Jamie straightened that point out for me. I don't really watch regular TV even on the internet or what-have-you. I watch rebroadcasts on the plane (sometimes), because I'm stuck in the ol' giant metal tube. The only TV shows I've been watching lately are Boondocks, Trailer Park Boys, and League of Gentlemen. Other than that, it's just football. I don't know if it's my weird schedule, but I just can't afford the time investment.

On a related note: Good on you denizens here with kids. I don't have any, and I think all I'd have time to do for them if I did have them is pitch them a rawhide bone and fresh straw once a day.

I will say this for broadcast TV: PBS kids has some good shit going on.

It's nice to know I can get some quality time with my kids from 4 to 5 every day by turning on Sesame Street and snuggling on the couch with them while they watch it. My son gets home from school at 4 and he's too tired and wound up to do anything else just then, so we have cookies and apple juice and talk about what Grover is doing this week and it's just a really nice time.

Pet Peeve:  the local costume shop put out a flier with about 150 costumes for ladies.  They were all "slutty + easily recognizable career or character = Halloween costume."  This pisses me off.  I love Halloween for its ties to its hard edge, pre-Christian roots: fear, other-worldliness, demons and death.  The only thing about being slutty that is remotely scary is the potential for catching an STI, but there's a cream or pill for most of those these days (we're talking mild annoyance and discomfort).   I'm not saying there's anything wrong with airing out your inner slut every so often, but I'm telling you there wasn't a single actually Halloween-y costume on the entire flier for women.  They were all sexualized versions of what you'd expect:  nurse, police officer, wench, old time-y saloon hooker... The men's section had a goodly amount of non-sexualized choices, but for the ladies it was totally "these are my tits.  PS, I'm a bunny."

The interesting thing is that the few times people try to be Halloween Scary AND Halloween Slutty, it almost never works.

I've seen people try to pull off Sexy Zombie.

Somehow it fails at both goals, almost always.

I think the best costume for a lady is Kali (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&source=imghp&biw=1017&bih=739&q=Kali&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=).

Kali is pretty rad.  I actually have a hand carved Hindu demon mask, with gold leaf and sticking out tongue and all, and thusly inspired, I think maybe I will wear that to hand out candy to the trick or treaters, and just, like, grunt and pant in response to any conversation.  That could be fun.

In related news, I am thrilled to announce that poor body image is not just for women anymore. They're now making Spanx for Men (http://www.freshpair.com/mens/Spanx-for-Men.html)! Feminism is a success in one respect, I guess -- we're all equally ashamed of our appearance.

You know, even if I were single and had the money, I wouldn't wear guy-Spanx but not because I don't have problems with my body image. I totally do. I hate that I'm heavy. I hate goddamned looking in mirrors. It is one of the ways I am not stereotypically male, I am acutely and painfully aware that I am not conventionally attractive.

However, I think that a temporary shaping undergarment would just make me feel worse not better because at the end of the day, you have to get naked to fuck and...

I guess in my mind, that's the situation I would really wanna BE conventionally attractive so it still wouldn't do me any good.

It'd just make me feel worse.

There's also this (http://www.bodyaware.com/MZ-showdetail?itemid=C005&returnurl=MI-DI&returncap=Return+to+the+gallery&returnpro=default&cid=9E11.1C4C&dtind=40465.8255995486) (the picture is oddly prudish - I've always been disappointed with that aspect of that retailer), which is actually pretty cool.

These (http://www.cb-6000.com/) are more along chastity lines, and you can wear some of 'em on planes!

Note: all sites guaranteed to be NSFW and possible to cause mind-warp. I apologize that this is occurring in the public area.

But yeah, more like that.

That reminds me of this (http://www.theonion.com/video/fat-kid-successfully-avoids-ridicule-by-swimming-w,14190/).

It evokes a mixture of equal parts amusement, sympathy and distress, with a dash of red-faced embarrassment.

And we're back: If you want to go for a more authentic chastity belt experience, you'd be better served by a Tollyboy or Access Denied.   They have more of a medieval metal briefs aesthetic.  Certainly they carry a higher cost, but... no one ever got fired for buying IBM.

I, for one, am thrilled to go back to talking about regular, normal Halloween costumes.

I would also be happy to hear about your pumpkin carving plans. We will probably be spray-painting our gourds and making Elmo, and Cookie Monster again this year. It was a pretty big hit last year, both with our own kids and the trick-or-treat crowd.

I think the deal is that the women who actually want to wear a costume for Halloween -- and not just use it as an excuse to make the cleavage -- are exactly the same women who can/will make their own costumes. Hence no one is marketing to them.

OK, so my lady and I are going as Elvis Costello and his girlfriend,
(http://dark-phoenix-rising.tripod.com/blog/ferngully_crysta.jpg)
Krista from Fern Gully.
There is a picture of her, somewhere, where she looks exactly like this still from the movie. But now I'm looking for it on Facebook and I can't find it and started finding cute cuddley pictures with her ex-bf, so NO I'm not looking any more.

The Elvis Costello thing is just that this one customer constantly tells me that I look like him, even though I don't, really.

I'm planning on getting a red shit and ##### and painstakingly painting the design for a sriracha bottle (http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ks4tla56kD1qza8w1o1_500.jpg) in white puff-paint.

I was all set to make a mask based on this (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs225.snc1/7235_164872907189_667377189_3329520_6298415_n.jpg) (I had the perfect old sweater I was going to use for material, and I found a pair of vintage dentures I was going to order) but then I showed the picture to my GF and she said she wouldn't go near me all night if I was wearing it.

Halloween is special to us since that is the night we met last year (moments after this (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs049.snc3/13659_516197045630_80901038_30810885_3900055_n.jpg) picture was taken) so I'm going to concede this one and make a costume that she can stand to see me in.

But man did I ever want to be that creepy rabbit thing, drinking gin and tonics through a straw and not saying a word.

of course, what it makes me imagine is a rapper making a song where he samples "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" and makes it "Won't You Be My n-word"

the set of the video would be like the set of "mr robinsons neighborhood".

I love that his mouth is so ajar.

Thanks. After posing for 60 pictures that way, I felt like I'd unhinged my jaw. :)

Plus, isn't she hot?! Holy crap!

Ladyfriend and I as Captain Hammer and Dr. Horrible.

That is both a great set of costumes and a fantastic pose. Supercool.

Hmm, I went to a screening of Psycho which was accompanied by the St. Louis orchestra. There was a costume contest and one group of winners had the same Birds costume.

Wait is this a thing?  Like, that costume is some type of pop culture thing and not just a girl with birds stuck on her?  What is it from?

I think it's from a movie called The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.

It's pretty obscure, I doubt you'd have heard of it.

Hitchcock?  That schmuck?

(I have never seen a Hitchcock film and don't know anything about him.  I have heard his name.  I can also guarantee The Big Lebowski is a better film.)

I have seen enough films to know that the only acceptable arguments for best all time movie are The Big Lebowski and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I haven't seen The Birds, either, but my understanding is that it's a pretty bad movie. Psycho, Rope, and Dial M for Murder are worth your time, though.

Our costumes were pretty basic:  a witch and a black cat.  The missus did a nice job on the witch's face paint, though.

What was unusual was being in the Caribbean for Halloween.  The hotel did absolutely nothing to celebrate (there weren't that many kids staying there, from what I could tell).  We dressed them up in their costumes and took them over to the main bar/restaurant, where they ate pizza, gave glowsticks/bracelets to the staff, and generally enjoyed being the center of attention.  A few complete strangers bought them candy from the hotel gift shop.  So they had a good time, despite no proper trick-or-treating.

Oh man. Rope is so freaking cool. Two guys kill a buddy, stuff him in a trunk, and proceed to have a dinner party (including corpsey's girlfriend) RIGHT ON the trunk. Almost the whole movie done in a single tracking shot. InTENSE. But yeah, watching that man get high was good too.
