Title: TOAMB Convention
Post by: pmcd9 on June 10, 2012, 09:57:31 pm
I am going to be driving from Houston to Baltimore Maryland in July to attend Artscape (http://www.artscape.org/). Anyone in that vicinity on the dates of July 20-22 should come see me.

There should definitely be a meetup somewhere between Baltimore and here. Whatdayathing?

I would also like to meet anyone individually anywhere between there and here along the way. Let me know if you are up for something/anything like that.

Well yeah, I'm definitely gonna visit DC, but c'mon, Baltimore's like a half hour drive from your house. You can come see me at the Festival too.

I'll be there for three days. Try and come see me.

Are you coming through Kentucky?

Not sure yet. Maybe. If not on the way up, then on the way back. We'll be in touch.

or atlanta?

Almost certainly.

I hope you make it.

I'm probably going to leave Houston on Sunday July 15, but plans are pretty nebulous at this stage.

Well they're certainly not going to pay me to bring my mundane car.

I like how it's assumed Paul can bring his art-painted, fire breathing, stripper pole clad vehicle halfway across the country but wombat can't bring some pugs to a car festival to meet it and Paul.

Really, wombles? Really.

It's not me. You have to understand, these pugs have very particular standards.

I think I might be able to make it to DC that weekend. I'll have to talk to the spouse. Wombat, if I can make it sans family, can I take you up on the previous offer to crash on your couch?

Paul, if you need a free place to stay on your way up, we have a bed for you. We're about six hours from Atlanta and six hours from DC/Baltimore, depending how fast you drive of course.

OK, I am definitely using my paid time off to go home for a week and some change. I asked my mom and she said my sister can let me borrow her car for a few days to go visit friends in Baltimore/DC. Have we discussed when this will happen? I should buy a plane ticket to Charlotte soon.

I am going to be in Baltimore on July 20-22 and Washington DC July 23-24.

Man, I am so bad at planning this kind of thing. Fly to Baltimore, bus to DC, bus to Charlotte, fly home? Fly to Charlotte, borrow car, drive to Baltimore/DC, drive back, fly home?

Lots of intersecting time tables will make this pretty hard. Family is out of town until the 25th, and it seems stupid to go home when they aren't there...

I know, I am pretty disappointed too. I think I am going to try to visit family in August instead, during the week when my brother is home, my sister hasn't started school yet, my mom hasn't gone back to work yet, etc. Maybe I can pop up and see JL one day or something.

Maybe I can pop up and see JL one day or something.

As long as it's not the weekend of Aug 10-11-12. I'll be at the beach with the in-laws those days.

If you come earlier that week, I will be here by myself with the Boy, who has school, while Pedro takes the girl, who will still be on summer break, to the beach*. So I will not be able to go out and paint the town, but if you come in the morning I'll be able to hang out while Danger Boy is in school, and if you come in the evening I can cook you dinner and we can play board games at my house after he goes to bed at 8.

You can bring a chaperone if you're worried I might seduce you. Or, you could come alone and just call me Mrs. Robinson.

Or, you could come the week before or the week after. But whatever you do, please do come visit. It is silly that your folks live so close and we've never gotten together while you've been home.

*I apologize for the number of commas in this sentence.

Title: Re: TOAMB Convention
Post by: jay-ell on June 15, 2012, 03:27:41 pm
I will probably be in NC the week of the 4th of August.

Beginning on the 4th, or ending on the 4th? Pedro will be at the beach from the 5th thru the 12th, and I will be going out there on the 9th or 10th (TBD). If you come before the 5th, I will have my daughter in morning/afternoon but can get away in the evening. After the 5th, I will be free during the morning/early afternoon while my son is in school, but will have to be home by midafternoon to get him off the bus. There is also a speech/occupational therapy schedule to keep, but that's a separate issue.

I can get together either way, but when, where, and for how long will be determined by whether or not I am single-parenting on the particular day you have free. Maybe you should PM me about this when the time gets closer? I...get wrapped around the axle about these things, and try to plan waaaay too far in advance.

Post by: jay-ell on July 10, 2012, 06:55:38 pm
The best days for me to get together are Saturday or Sunday. My kid has a birthday party to attend on Saturday but I can skip that if need be; I don't have anything at all scheduled for Sunday but I need to be home by midnight so I can be a functioning adult at 7:30 Monday morning. Which means the latest I can leave the DC area is 6 PM Sunday.

Where are we going to meet, and what are we going to do when we get there?
Title: Re: TOAMB Convention
Post by: wombat on July 10, 2012, 08:41:25 pm
I have something I usually do 11:30-12.:30 Sundays but it's not critical.

Since Paul is coming from Baltimore we could meet around where I live instead of in DC, it would be less of a trip for him.

JL, I will be in NC between the 7th and the 14th.

Of August? Yep, that is beach week. I'll be here with Danger Boy M-T-W during the day, but Pedro and Chaos Girl will be away. On Wednesday at 4 we're leaving for Carolina Beach ourselves, and will be there 'til Sunday evening. We could hang out in the evening on Monday but I'm assuming you won't want to drive 3 hours to visit me the day before you fly out.

I would offer to come to you, but unfortunately I won't be able to drive out and see you any of those days, because I wouldn't be able to make the round trip in time to get my kid from school (even if I drove there, turned around and came straight home).

So my days will be free, but I will be housebound in the evenings after Danger goes to bed (9PM) so we won't be able to go out drinkin' or anything. Can you drive up for a day or so? You can crash here overnight if you don't think that would be weird. You'll have to sleep in a princess bed, but I can put some Toy Story sheets on it for you. Or, you could drive up earlyish and get here about lunchtime, we can hang out in the afternoon and maybe play some board games, then take my kid someplace fun after he gets done with school.

How does that sound?
Title: Re: TOAMB Convention
Post by: theinevitable on July 10, 2012, 10:24:05 pm
I will have to figure this out when it gets closer to that time. The biggest issue is that I would have to take one of my parent's cars for the day, which is pretty inconvenient for them.

Just a reminder that I am stuck, or at least my car is stuck at the festival all day so I would need a ride. My festival schedule will be arriving in the mail soon (maybe today) and I'll know exactly what is expected of me and my car. I am intending to do some roaming around with my car after the festival closes so maybe we could plan our meetup around that.

I'm thinking no. So y'all will just have to come see me at the Festival. Maybe come late on Saturday and we can have dinner together or something, and when the Festival lets out we can go tooling around town in my car. Maybe find some out of the way spot where we can do Firecracker hats. Who's going to ride on top of the car? I'm looking at you, JL.

The local welcoming committee, in the form of Wombat and Bobby, suggest the following plan, based on the fact that Wombat is feeling lazy and not up for an adventure:

JL comes to my house on Friday, we have Burmese food with Bobby
JL goes to Baltimore on Saturday - JL, Bobby and Paul have dinner, Bobby knows of an Indian place that's good
Paul comes to my place on Sunday and maybe we can pull together dinner with other DC people then? Or Monday or Tuesday, which is when you said you'd be staying Paul - is this still true?

There is a small complication in that I have a class starting on Sunday nights and right now I am not 100% positive what time.

OK, it is looking like Friday may not be the best day for me. I would have to leave before Pedro could leave work in order to be there at anything like a reasonable time, and my daughter has a dance class and my son will need to be picked up from school, and I sort of don't trust my mother-in-law to handle those things.

So, I could maybe leave around noon on Saturday, get into the DC area by 6, have dinner with Bobby, Wombat, and Paul, crash at Wombat's house overnight and head home Sunday after lunch. I haven't talked to Pedro about it, yet but I think this plan would have the smallest possible impact on his weekend plans, so I don't know why he'd object. Plus, it gives other folks in the area (Cort? Carlos?) two opportunities to join us -- Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Paul and Bobby are going to be in Baltimore on Saturday night though. Maybe they can have lunch on Sunday? Did we ever find out when Paul is done in Baltimore?

I will be arriving in the wee hours of Friday morning, checking into my hotel and sleeping until I have to report to the festival at 11:00am. My car will be on display until 9pm that evening. There is a pizza party on Friday night. The instructions are not clear if that is during or after the exhibition. My guess is it's during.

On Saturday there will be a little bit of movement. We begin the day at the American Visionary Art Museum (which I'm very interested in seeing) at 9:45. We will be there until we leave for a caravan to Artscape at 10:30. There is an artcar parade through Artscape at 11:00 and then the cars will be on exhibit until 9:00pm.

Sunday is exhibition at Artscape from 11am to 8pm.

My schedule is a little more flexible. Once the cars are in place at the exhibition I am free to leave if I choose. If anyone wants to pick me up and sight see me around Baltimore on one or more of those days that would be frikkin' awesome. I just need to be back at closing time to pick up my car. Then I will take you around having fun with my car if you wish.

Don't forget I am going to be in DC on Monday and Tuesday. I am interested in seeing the big monuments and the Smithsonian. I heard you can rent segways to tool around the mall and check shit out that way. I'll bet it's out of my price range, but that would be really cool.

Anyway, tomorrow morning I will be on the road and out of touch so contact me via telephone and let me know what the plans are.

Oh, by the way, I'm going to be seeing Wilco perform in Charlottesville Virginia on Thursday night. I'm extrememly jazzed to be seeing Wilco perform in a tiny ampitheater in a little town in Virginia. And whoever it was that posted they were going to see Wilco at Wolftrap on the night before I think, you are the one that got me to thinking that they might be playing somewhere else in the region along the way to Baltimore. And sure enough... Of course I would love to see them play at Wolftrap, that place is fantastic, but this is almost as good.

Paul I assume you are showing up to stay at my place Sunday night somehow. I am going to be honest, it is unlikely I will make it to Baltimore as I am a wimp who can't drive myself there. Call me when you know what's up with coming here.

I was planning on doing dinner in Baltimore with Paul and Bobby. I am planning on driving vs. taking the train, in fact the train did not even occur to me quite honestly. But I could drive you into Baltimore, Wombles, if you want  to do that.

I really wish I could be there Monday or Tuesday to do the DC Touristy stuff with Paul. Those of you who have met me know what a total monument nerd I am. It makes me a little bit sad that I'll be driving through the Capitol and not stopping to see the founding documents. But there's just no way to make it work without asking Pedro to take time off work, which he really cannot do right now.

I just checked train tickets, and it's actually a bit cheaper to drive. But it's only a difference of about $20 round trip, and taking the train would allow me to read books or take a nap on the way. And the timetables work out nicely so that I could leave here at 10 AM and arrive in Baltimore around 6.

But.

If I ride into Baltimore but try to leave from DC, the cost almost doubles, because it's essentially buying 2 one-way tickets instead of a single round-trip. So somebody will have to take me back to Baltimore on Sunday afternoon by 3 PM, or else I'll have to take the train into Union Station and then hitch a ride to Baltimore on Saturday night anyway. It seems simpler to drive, it'll give me a chance to pay my respects at the Archives rotunda on my way home on Sunday, and I have a couple of audiobooks I've been meaning to listen to anyway.

So it looks like I'll be bringing a car.

I got spousal clearance for the trip, BTW. I can even leave a little earlier than I expected on Saturday, like 10 AM. Now we just need to work out the agenda.

Revised version looks like this maybe --

JL arrives in the DC metro area on Saturday late afternoon around 4, picks up Wombat, drives to Baltimore for dinner and possibly to attend Artscape, if Wombat is feeling brave.

JL and Wombat drive back to Wombat's house, braid each others' hair, read Seventeen magazine, pillow fights, misc. slumber party activities, etc.

Sunday brunch in Wombat's neighborhood, which IIRC is closer to Silver Springs? Unfortunately, Paul won't be able to attend; hopefully some of the other DC area people will be free. Afterward, JL will make a pilgrimage to the National Mall along with whoever wants to join.

Wombat lives IN Silver Spring, singular. We are touchy about that.

Dammit, I wasn't sure if it was singular or plural so I even Googled it so as not to embarrass myself. Turns out there's a Silver Springs, plural, in Florida.

Fuck you, Silver Springs, FL. Screw you.

And to the good people of Silver Spring -- I apologize wholeheartedly. I shall not make this same mistake twice.

Paul, unfortunately the Nats are out of town next week or I'd totally drag you to a game. If you don't have dinner plans Monday night, let me know, maybe we can work something out. Glad you can see Wilco on this trip--I'm the one going to Wolf Trap on Wednesday. Never seen them live before.

It would pretty much be exactly like us, that even our in-person meetups tend to wander.

I am starting to wonder if I should come up this weekend. I would certainly like to see everyone, but if the point is to get together while Paul is there and I can't come at a time when he's free, then it probably makes more sense for me to go at a later time, when everyone else is available and it's less inconvenient for my spouse and kids.

...and we never hear from JL or Pedro again...

Pedro and I talked about the odds of Paul being an axe murderer. I figure, I've known the dude online for eight years, which is longer than most of my RL friends. He is the most public with his real identity of all of us. I even had a long conversation with his father (http://professional-detours.blogspot.com/2011/04/why-grampa-how-one-question-inspired.html) a while back.

So if he's been pulling a long con just to murder me and my family in our sleep tonight, he's the most dedicated, target-specific serial killer I've ever heard of. And that's just so unlikely that I'm not even worried about it. I'm much more concerned that I'm going to burn the chicken tonight, or that Pedro is going to forget to pick up the tomatoes from the co-op on his way home from work tonight.

Now the rest of you, on the other hand...

I'm not going to come up this weekend. It looks like we won't all be able to get together all at once, and I have some responsibilities here at home. I will come up another time when I can see everyone.

Carlos, Paul wants you to come rescue him from the fair on Saturday. He's free from noon to 9 PM and expects to be bored out of his mind, but won't have a ride to leave. Give him a call.

Wombat, he is planning on staying in B-more Sunday night and showing up at your place on Monday. I don't know what this means for your plans, but y'all will have to work that out without me. You or Bobby should also call him. And somebody should get in touch with Cort, too -- maybe he's free Monday night?

"Yeah I met this guy on the internets and he put my little girl in a flaming car. Its cool, though. We share a common interest in cartoons, you see."

I...did not tell my mother he was here. Conveniently, she is out of town, so I didn't have to lie so much as conveniently omit.

Also, Paul has the pics of the two of us on top of his car, holding on to the stripper pole while flames dance behind us. I made him stand on the side with the flames. He singed his hair a little. It was awesome.

Also: Inev, Paul just texted me from the Wilco show and asked me to tell you that Lee Renaldo is opening. I am going to assume you know what that means, because I sure as hell don't.

I saw Wilco and the Lee Ranaldo band Wednesday night. Good show. Lee's band rocked fairly hard but had the disadvantage of not many people paying attention to them. At least up on the lawn--Wolf Trap is one of those "barn" venues where there's seats down close and then a big lawn area. Wolf Trap lets you bring in food and drink (even alcohol), so people are mostly chatting and noshing during the opening act.

Wilco put on a good show, but again, it was fairly mellow for us.

I am kind of glad I decided not to come. I went to the doctor yesterday and confirmed that I have a sinus infection, and I feel kind of crappy. Spending six hours behind the wheel of a car would not be great for my persistent headache right now.

I will come another time, though. I have some family in Baltimore and they are expecting a baby in September; there is a distinct possibility that we will be visiting them in mid-October. If that's the case, I can likely slip away to Silver Spring for a few hours for a meetup.

Firecracker helmets did not happen. We left Artscape for the post-party, but that party turned out to be rather sedate and pyrotechnic hats did not seem appropriate.

BUT. I sure get why Paul enjoys the artcar scene so much. We walked the exhibit and he introduced me to the other practitioners, who were all friendly and gracious, as well as having cool-ass cars. It was great to watch people come by and marvel at the cars and to watch Paul interact with them. He didn't shoot off the flames until the evening was nearly over, as he wasn't sure how local law enforcement would react, but when he did holy cats did it draw a crowd. Eventually a young woman took a turn on the pole with the flames blasting, and people went nuts. This is one of the more overall awesome photos I've ever taken.

If loving floppy titties is wrong I don't want to be right.

it's just a funny picture. i was making fun of the oversentimentality of your statement, not your sexuality.

i think we can all agree that titties are wonderful regardless of the size.

Oh, you know, the usual. I finished my master's degree and had another kid since the last time we spoke, I guess that's the big news. She is four.

Are you on the facespace?

Good grief, welcome to the "World Is Not Enough" club.

No, no, I mean, holy shit, this is so improbable, who knows what crazy shit is next?

I'm gonna have to take credit for this one.

But seriously people. I posted a pic of Wombat's pugs sitting in my artcar. Have you nothing at all to say about that?

It can't compete with the one of JL. Pugs have met their match.

The boys would be going crazy for wombat too, if the pugs weren't concealing her assets.

Wombat looks so sweet and so very happy.  Connected with her inner child perhaps.

Doomglobe, welcome back! I must say all I remember about you is that you are a dude of quality.

Wombat could probably afford to be less connected with her inner child actually.

I'm sure glad I didn't take my artcar to DC. My friend was detained by the Secret Service for an hour. If they had seen me in my car I would still be there awaiting transfer to Guantanamo Bay.

This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/6945204882/lightbox/) is my friends car.

But then what would happen to your imaginary friends?

Wombles, in all the excitement about Doomglobe being back I neglected to mention the pic. You look just as adorable as ever, it's a good thing you rarely post photos of yourself because if you posted more nobody would be interested in the pugs any more.

It also occurs to me that Paul chose the two most camera-shy people on the board to come visit. I told him that I took the time to curl my hair and everything because I knew he'd want to take some pictures. I think it's a testament to the Power of Paul that he was able to get either of us in front of a camera at all.

What he hasn't mentioned, BTW, is how completely enthralled Chaos Girl was with this strange man in the dragon car. You should've seen them playing with Pokemon Happy Meal toys together, it was so sweet. And, of course, now she asks me almost daily, "Mama, when we gonna paint your car?"

Eeek, and your friend's car doesn't even have any weapons mounted on it. Good thing you took Metro.

I would never have been in the photo if I could have figured out a way to have both pugs in it on their own but they are too small to sit on the seat and stick their heads out the window so it would have taken hours of training. I am glad you are all enjoying it anyway.

He said they pulled out mirrors on sticks to check underneath the car. They were serious.

That's standard for most things, though. You need the mirrors on sticks to go onto the grounds of the NIH, for example.

Do you need mirrors on sticks to drive down a public street?

You gotta remember, Paul, when you left Texas you left Free America. You don't get to do the same shit as you do at home.

Apparently.

That picture of omba and the pugs was so awesome. You are mostly behind the lens in the photos that I see, so it was adorable to see you nestled in pugs! It looks like the artcar convention was a magical adventure for everybody.

I will have to figure this out when it gets closer to that time. The biggest issue is that I would have to take one of my parent's cars for the day, which is pretty inconvenient for them.

So are you coming to visit me next week? If you have $30 for a round-trip train ticket I can pick you up and drop you off at the station. You could even make it a day trip -- they have a train departing at 7 AM and arriving in Cary at 10, and there is another that departs at 5 and gets back to Charlotte at 8. It would pretty much have to be Tuesday, though -- I'm leaving for the beach as soon as I get my kid from school on Wednesday.

If you want to stay the night that's no problem at all. Pedro and Chaos Girl will be at the beach so you can stay in Chaos' room. (She has a full bed.) Paul slept there, it is the most comfortable bed in the house.

(P.S. if you stay the night there's an afternoon train you can take the next day)

It would have probably depended on whether you were wearing some sexy cat woman leather deal or not.  I mean, I'd probably tolerate and later brag about a certain level of assault if you went to the effort to get all dressed up for it.
