OMG. Is that actually possible? If possible why isn't there a law against it?

Quote from: Arthur
It's true! It's true! The crown has made it clear.
The climate must be perfect all the year.
A law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August cannot be too hot.
And there's a legal limit to the snow here
In Camelot.

Today I'm driving from Portland to Spokane to go work there for a week, and live in my parents basement.  Were this two days ago, I would be preparing to smoke a hookah and drink some of the newly legalized absinthe.  Were this one day ago, I would be laying in bed all day with a massive hang over, and finding that playing Uno on an Xbox is strangely compelling.

I guess in these sort of situations the "why" isn't as important as the "where."

Today I'm going to waste a lot of time at work due to the internet being down for most of the morning, then go home and bask in having the house all to myself for three days.  I'm thinking takeout for dinner... and it's been a long time since I've had a pretend lipsync rock concert in my pajamas.  Rock!  Also maybe it's time for a little talking-alive-cat-puppet theatre too?

Update: SO was unwilling to pick up dinner (or leave the house) due to it being -33 F with the windchill.  Seems like a reasonable request to me.  So I slapped some pasta together.

-51 F, (-69 F windchill) here. A course, I ain't goin' out for burgers, but still.

...post about what I did yesterday.  I took my kid to her first sporting event surrounding an interest of hers, rather than mine;  the Stanford vs. Georgia Women's Gymnastics meet.  There were four highlights for her - the Development squad from her home gym in Fremont had a 7 minute demonstration before the college meet started and she recognized the girls and coaches; later she realized the guys wandering around with all the cotton candy and icees and pretzels would give her stuff in exchange for some of her allowance.  She found out that when the Stanford athletes did really well on an event their coach would give them a packet of stuff to toss into the audience - and that her daddy was good at catching these things (including a t-shirt, an autograph pen, and a hair scrunchy).  Finally, she thought it was cool that the athletes signed her poster at the end of the meet, even if she did have to stand in a long line.  The competition itself wasn't of much interest except for stretches of 10 minutes here and there where she would settle down and watch.  Part of the problem was that the arena didn't have the greatest sight-lines, with support pillars completely blocking our view of the vault, and the uneven bars being way off in the far corner from our seats.  She slept on the drive home, with her new scrunchy rolled up on her arm and autographed team poster at hand.  I had the memory of some truly phenomenal performances, marred only by a Georgia player who fell off the beam (landing on her feet), and a Stanford player who missed a catch on the high bar (landing on her face - ow).  Georgia won the meet, but it was a lot closer than I think they were expecting.

I would say that anything lower than -30 F and it is reasonable to examine whether it is worthwhile to go out.  Once you're warm and snuggly, it is hard to find any reason to give that up for discomfort.  Plus he hadn't successfully warmed up entirely from having been out there shovelling snow about 30 min before due to improper clothing.

Having a lot of experience with the cold, I really feel like when it comes to anything below -45 F  through -70 F, it all feels the same: i.e. uncomfortably cold, the kind of cold that causes instant swearing.  Numbness comes on pretty quickly, then it's just coping with the discomfort and pain of breathing and blinking.  Also a dull sense of urgency encoded in the DNA in regard to a need to find shelter before frostbite happens.  I don't really know why folks here complain so much about it though.  I always want to say "It happens every year.  You have chosen to live in the coldest city in the world with a population over 500,000.  Shut up."

I would say that it's worth thinking twice about going out if it's less than +30 F. But I guess that's why I haven't chosen to live in the coldest city in the world with a population of over 500,000.

At my elementary school, -20 F was our cutoff for indoor recess; at -10 F, we were going out and liking it.

Now, I live somewhere where people put on parkas when it hits 30. Is this what poetic justice feels like?

In Southern California, people start putting on heavy jackets when it dips under 60.

When it dips under 50, I stop wearing shorts and switch to slacks and a short sleeve shirt.

I look like a perpetual tourist.

See, for some reason, in North Carolina, people don't stop wearing shorts until it gets under 40.  There's this whole weird phenomenon around here of sweatshirts-with-shorts that I find incredibly bizarre.

I, on the other hand, don't wear shorts unless it breaks 100.  Even then, you're more likely to find me in a cotton skirt than a pair of shorts.

Actually, if it's above 90, you're more likely to find me in an air-conditioned house.  But if I must go outside for any length of time -- July 4 fireworks celebrations, et cetera -- dollars to doughnuts I'm wearing a dress or skirt.  It's nothing to do with my body image, either.  I'll wear a skirt up to here if I'm in the mood.  But shorts ride up terribly on me -- something about the way my body is put together, or something, I guess?  And I just hate the way they feel on my thighs.  Yuck, yuck, ick.

In the winter, I don't wear a coat unless I'm going to be outside for a while.  I'd rather wear three layers than a coat.  Bulk is not my thing.

For some reason shorts with a long-sleeved shirt looks really weird to me, but I frequently wear jeans with a t-shirt. The distinction seems really random when I think about it. But I know it's just me. Most jobs have no problems with people wearing polo shirts (at least on Fridays) but most offices never allow shorts. Are legs really that vulgar?

For serious, weather is nothing to screw with. It can really fuck you up if you are out in it exerting yourself and are not properly prepared (which of course you know). Make sure he is careful about that in the future, please. Thank you.
