I'm the first person in my family to study giraffe as a profession. I am fairly sure of this.

My grandfather painted paintings of the Mayflower on the sides of moving vans. I think maybe he had more fun than I do.

I may be the first person on either side of my family with a bachelor's degree. I can't remember if my father got a four year degree although I know he went to some night school. The main story I remember is that although he was a native speaker of Italian, his Italian teacher flunked him because he didn't speak the standard dialect. I flunked a year of Spanish in high school, so I am proudly the first to have been fairly held back a year in a foreign language.

I am definitely the first with an advanced degree but a fat lot of good that has done me, really. Too much upward mobility all at once isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I was supposed to be the first one in the whole family to get a University diploma, what with being the youngest one, with the ridiculous vocabulary . Apparently it would mean a Great Deal for the Parents, they being rather simple country folk wont to look with awe at such socially respectable hoop-jumping shenanigans. But I couldn't take it for more than two semesters and dropped out without ever looking back. Then my older sister, already married with children and approaching her fifties, slaving her butt off with her husband in some dingy itinerant low-cost apparel-selling gig, found time to graduate in Pedagogy, in which I think was an unexpected turn of events - everybody wins! However they still regard the whole University thing as a hallowed endeavour, and undoubtedly pity me for not being able to make it. If only I could make them understand that no, really, it's OK. How could I ever succeed in conveying to them my utter contempt for the institution in its current form?

...try to write a post backing up deja V til I deleted it for use of too many I's.  This really bugs me about the internet, at least as far as my writing ability goes.  I can't really write notes or emails either, but pretty damn good with the essay (by the way, thanks college for having me master the 8 page essay, THAT WILL COME IN HANDY!.  Think about how many I's are used on internet message boards, so much more than an any other writing format or whatever, it isn't really style you know.

I count 40 for 15 posts, but I am pretty high.  That is 2 & 2/3 for what, like an average of four sentences probably (I am not high enough to count sentences.)  Also aware this post way out does the average in I usage.

This has always been a weird thing for me. My parents have always scored full points on any proud and supportive scale and are beautiful people, but they've never been my role models, at least not as far as my career goes, because we have such different areas of interest. It's just odd because so many people that surround me at uni and so on are trying to live up to that sort of parental example. On the one hand that sort of thing could be destructive but it must also be nice to have a that sort of target to aim for?

My take is - the sooner you realize you can live only for yourself (in the sense that only you can do your things) - and only once, at that - , the better. If it means that I might be a less-than-ideal son, I take solace in thinking that this is part of Nature's bigger plan. Think of those bastard newborn tarantulas eating their mom alive (or the eldest daughter asking for her mother's nicest kimono soon after her mother's burial, in "Tokyo Story"*, for a less extreme example). Judging from me, my own kids would eventually shiv me in the shins & sell my stuff to gypsies (which is why I'm not having any - ha ha who wins now?)

my parents are both hardcore and worked their way through school. they are both very smart, but compound that smartness with lots of Effort. my dad then compounded this effort by working his way basically to the top.

my grandpa (the one who gave monkeys cancer) has two PhDs, because after he got his first one in Chile (in a topic they picked for him based on some sort of exam?) he realized he wanted to do disease-stuff and moved to the US with my grandma and infant mom. my other grandpa was a used car salesman, among other things, and did not go to college. that whole side of my family basically look at my dad in awe, it is uncomfortable.

um, it does not seem like I am going to be able to top any of these. I can't even be the first in my family to be an under-achiever.

maybe I can be the first person in my family to get internet-famous. I can be the first meme in my family tree.

I used to tell the oldest boy I was gonna sell him to the gypsies until I figured out he had no idea what a gypsy was and had made up his own horrible mental terror image.

I used to think this wasn't such a bad thing, because I assumed gypsies had something to do with circuses, and - Come On! - who doesn't want to join the circus when they're a kid?  I still don't know much about gypsies, but I'm pretty sure they're not actually in the market for spoiled middle class kids who won't mind their parents.

...go to Wales. Unless I fall asleep and miss a connection, which on about an hours sleep is Liklely. This is what happens when you arrange to move Down South the day after you get back from holiday and leave the packing for both until the very last minute.

Divorced parents means two funerals?  How does that work?  Are they gonna bury the guy twice?

Full details emerged and the situation was not quite as sad as originally thought. The guy grew up in one town, but his main family is all from another one. This situation was the result of a divorce, though. I didn't know the guy, but the Marine Reserves provides funeral services for current and former Marines. Also, he was not killed in action, but contracted some kind of fatal infection. Still tragic, though.

As for the topic at hand, somebody said that parents are often more forgiving of their children than children are of their parents (or themselves).

You go and squander your opportunities to be a fuck off (got two younger brothers trying that route) and I ain't so very sympathetic to someone mentally hitting themselves in the nuts over falling well shy of whatever goals they have.

Note: not saying Inev falls into any kind of category here.

Maybe Inev can succeed at being the first in his family to never sleep with anyone who wants to fuck him ever.
