I had a dream....
« on: December 03, 2009, 10:12:03 pm »

...in which I had a mind-blowing epiphany that They Might Be Giants' eponymous debut was essentially an exact rip-off of U2's Boy. When I woke up I was all excited for about 8 seconds thinking that I'd just blown the lid off some decades-old sham. Of course, by the 9th second I was all, like, "WHAAAAT!?"

In my dream last night, the village of Cooperstown had devolved into a David Lynchian nightmarescape and I kept getting murdered by alive gargoyles and having my car stolen by shady hotel-workers. Everytime I got killed, I woke up at the beginning of the dream again but anything that got stolen from me was still missing, it was like dying in a video game, it was a real goddamned hassle.

One of my friends from high school, his dad was dying in a bed and was convinced that I was my uncle Pete for some reason. I think he might've been the high school psychologist when Pete was in school, I'm not sure, the "real" version of the guy died a year and a half ago but in the dream, he was just starting to die. It was just a bad scene.

It is important to note that where I come from, "Cooperstown" does not mean "Baseball Hall of Fame", "Cooperstown" means "the place with the rich peoples' hospital and if you go there, it probably means you've gone crazy or you're going to die and they've sent you to the rich peoples' hospital as a last ditch effort".

That sounds awful. You should smoke more weed. I used to be plagued by really long, involved nightmares, too. Now most of my dreams are very short and inoffensive. This began as soon as I started smoking regularly.

Yeah, back when that sort of thing was compatible with my lifestyle, a lot more of my dreams were either:

a.) I am stalked and murdered horribly by shotgun and then I wake up screaming.

or

b.) I meet a girl I wanted to have sex with when I was in high school and then I have sex with her.

Things were simpler then.

Unless you're a rich brain surgeon or something, I can't imagine that a life in which a little weed here and there is incompatible is any kind of life worth living.

I sometimes have dreams that People are after me for some reason, usually because I am a spy. There is a lot of fear in these dreams, but also a lot of cool stuff because I have amazing physical abilities like the chick from Alias.

I also have a sort of a lot of dreams that involve being in a concentration camp and being separated from my children. While the action-movie dreams are scary, they are also sort of fun to remember afterwards. The concentration camp dreams are unmitigated horror, and it's rare that I'm able to go back to sleep that night.

It's strange, but sometimes I have nightmares that are so bad I crawl into bed with one of my kids, instead of the other way around.

I've only had one flying dream in my whole life, about two years ago.  In it, I was sitting on a small, flat, black plastic slab with a molded seat and two metal handles, one on each side.  I could steer by gripping the handles and leaning one way or the other.  It was such a blast.  I would love to have another turn at flying someday.

i used to be able to have lucid dreams, where i controlled the outcomes. as a result i had a ton of flying dreams, for years. i loved them. since i met the missus, i rarely remember a dream - maybe once or twice a year - and when i do, there's no outcome at all, just a bunch of random associations. i think this is because i wasn't happy back then, but working on finding out how to be, and then she pulled me out of my years-long doldrums; since i was happy awake (still am), i didn't need the dreams to keep me sane. that's just my disgusting romantic side, i guess.

i used to be able to have lucid dreams, ...
Benadryl. Take three or more right before bed, wake up with early alarm, fall back asleep. This method has worked 90% of the time for me. You'll feel hungover until you drink some coffee.

I've slept on the floor in my daughter's room (maybe twice?) for similar reasons.  Her loft bed won't take adult weight.  Usually I can content myself with touching her face or foot.
