Maybe this sounds Libertarian of me, but it is ridiculous that i can't buy some damn glasses online without a "current" prescription. Just let me type in the little numbers from my old one and send me the glasses. I will pay you the money you want. Can my eyes have changed that much in the past two years? Am I going to ruin my eyes if I have the wrong prescription by a tiny factor?

...is it a bad idea to modify ("forge") my old prescription? They want a scan of the prescription, and I modified it with a pen and then fixed little blemishes with photoshop. I guess a guy ordering glasses online ain't exactly the 5 o'clock news, Dan.

What site are you using? I get glasses from Zenni Optical and I don't think they ask for that.

yes, you can hurt your eyes by failing to update your prescription. your vision fails faster if you don't help it out. take fifty bucks to sears and get a damn exam.

or, go to chile and get some glasses there. nice and cheap-like down there. i brought back two pairs with me.

Zenni doesn't ask for proof of exam. And no one has glasses cheaper either.

ok, I think I figured out that if i get an exam it is covered, and if I get glasses with that prescription from the place I want they are also covered. So that is worth doing.

My zenni glasses have been hit or miss. The current ones were fine for a while, but now they are all beaten up and kind of falling apart. I tried to tighten the arms and kind of messed them up. The previous pair were a lot smaller than I thought they would be, and they pinched my head.

Hells yeah!  I use Zenni and I can put any dang old numbers I please in there and get the glasses.

Of course, if your prescription's a couple years old, it mightn't be a bad idea to pop for $50 bucks and get an updated eye exam.

oh my god lines. I don't understand what is so hard about waiting in line.

A constant issue at my place is that there is an ice-cream case a few feet away from the cash register. People want to think there is a separate line for ice cream. I don't know how they think that works, if I am the only employee there, and there is only one cash register. I need in a major way to learn to be more imperative. "sorry, the line is over here!"

Today I woke up after 10 hours of sleep, ate a sandwich, took my drugs, and have been on an intense chain of getting-shit-done ever since. Called that girl and left a voicemail so that I can clear this up one way or the other. Wrote my old professors asking to meet about grad school recommendations. Wrote my moderate-democrat roommate a very long email about charter schools, communist theorists, and the whole "perfect is the enemy of the good" question. Any of you guys know anything about Charter Schools? This seems like something JL would know about.

I know a little bit. What is your specific question?

I guess what I meant is, what are your thoughts? I have a knee-jerk negative response. I have also read that there is not very much evidence that they actually work any better than normal public schools. Their proponents also seem to have that "at least we're DOING SOMETHING" attitude that I don't like. If you're doing something stupid, doing SOMETHING is worse than doing NOTHING.

"Man I'm glad I never had the option to go to charter school!" or "I deeply regret sending my child to a charter school" - No one ever.

Man I'm glad I never had the option to go to charter school!
Said no one ever.

Disagree. Friends of mine in DC actually helped start a charter school because they wanted a Chinese language immersion program, which no place else had. So if you're looking for something truly specific like that, it can do great things. If it's just "I want my kid to go to a charter school because I'm an angry tea party person and I think public schools are bullshit," then that doesn't really produce anything useful.
